  1. *As of November 22nd, 2019 **Only for players with 31+ TPE A chart showing the distribution of TPE in the VHL (and VHLM) by country Thanks to the Portal/Will being able to export all the information I needed (TPE, Nationality, Draft Season) easily, I was able to do this much quicker than I did in the past; when I did this the first time years ago, I had to manually go through every active player's page and get the information, and then compile all of it and do the math manually, which was a total drag, so thank you to Will and the Portal for making this much easier. Also don't worry, there will be much more in-depth statistics than this, this is just the first dip into the IIHF TPE rankings I'll be doing for this season.

  4. Anything that promotes more activity from new members is a good thing; in a perfect world with unlimited resources, we’d have a bunch of tournaments like this, because in general, more games=more fun. But I think you need to look at things like this in a sort of cost vs. benefit mindset; what are the labor costs of a tournament that ultimately doesn’t mean much in the long run? Wouldn’t you rather have the simmers and league management focus on getting through the offseason as quick as possible in order to start the next VHL season ASAP (which is ultimately the most important thing)? Organizing these tournaments takes a lot of work, and I personally think the cost outweighs the benefit for this type of tournament.

  7. I have to respectfully disagree here; I always felt having teams in niche cities was part of the fun of playing for them in an online sim league, because you would never see a professional team at a high level in said cities. I know most people probably don't feel this way, especially now considering that Davos is really the only true "small" city team left; it is funny how times change though, when I joined the league Davos was always in contention, and to be honest, this is the first time I can recall hearing anybody say that it should be re-located. I have been gone for about 2 years though, so I guess a lot has changed since then.
  8. thank goodness this poll didn't come out when Vasteras was around

  12. Harnessing the raw, gargantuan power of Microsoft Excel I used player threads in the Retired Players section for 95% of these, is there a better source?
  13. I created a spreadsheet of every player in the Hall of Fame in order to find out some statistics. You can definitely see in the graph above where TPE earning really took off in the S20's. I was actually a little surprised to see that there are a decent amount of newer inductees without crazy high amounts of TPE, such as Ay Ay Ron (S56 - 771 TPE) and Lukas Muller (S53 - 786 TPE). I do notice that recently there appears to be a high degree of variance between players making it in, and I'm interested to see if that trend continues. Here are my some other things I found interesting: Average TPE: 921 Average TPE (Forward): 917 Average TPE (Defense): 886 Average TPE (Goalie): 983 Lowest TPE (Forward): Brett Slobodzian - 355 Lowest TPE (Defense): Petr Shirokov - 325 Lowest TPE (Goalie): Matthew Pogge - 213 Highest TPE (Forward): Lord Karnage - 1561 Highest TPE (Defense): Phil Hamilton - 1459 Highest TPE (Goalie): Norris Stopko - 1623 Lowest TPE in the HoF: Matthew Pogge - It's no surprise here that the lowest total TPE player in the Hall of Fame is from S1, but I was definitely surprised when I saw how LOW his TPE actually was; 213!!! Despite having a very below-average skillset, Pogge still was able to collect a handful of hardware in his short career, amassing two Tretiak trophies as the leagues top goalie, a playoff MVP trophy, and three selections to the All-Star game in just four seasons. Highest TPE in the HoF: Norris Stopko - I wasn't around for Stopko to break the record for most TPE ever for a player in the Hall of Fame, but I do find it interesting that the highest and lowest TPE totals for the Hall of Fame are both goalies. Just by looking at his stats I see that he had a monster career, and definitely makes a case as possibly the greatest VHL goalie of all time.
  14. Is There a Mathematic Correlation Between Hall of Famers Playing for Your Franchise and Your Franchise Winning Championships? Before I dive into the results of the above question, I want to explain what I mean by "mathematically significant". In statistics, you can measure the relationship between two variables with a complex formula that Excel can [thankfully] calculate so long as you have the data. The resultant of the formula is a number between 0 and 1, with the scale below showing the strength of the relationship: I plugged the data into Excel to see how strong the relationship was between having a Hall-of-Fame player playing for a franchise and said franchise having historical success winning championships. I only included franchises that were around for a decent amount of time in order to remove outliers (sorry Malmo, Moscow, DC, and Prague). These are my results: Franchise Championships HOF Players Playoff Appearances Seasons Calgary 9 31 41 68 New York/Hamilton 7 35 38 68 Seattle 8 33 36 68 Toronto 9 36 39 68 Davos/Amstel/Avangard 10 34 39 68 Helsinki 11 36 39 68 Riga/Stockholm 8 31 44 68 Vasteras/Madrid/Stockholm 2 28 24 57 Vancouver/Quebec City 3 17 25 37 Cologne 1 10 15 27 Correlation between Championships and HOF Players 0.84 Correlation between Playoff Appearances and HoF Players 0.87 As you can see by the correlation values above, there appears to be a strong relationship between the amount of postseason success a franchise has and the amount of Hall-of-Famers who have played for said franchise. Despite the numbers backing up my statement, I believe these findings are a bit flawed, for a number of reasons. This test is usually for larger data sets; the VHL had only 8 teams for 30 seasons, meaning that there was a theoretical (purely mathematical, with no external factors affecting the probability) 12.5% chance a HoF player would play for your franchise up until S31, a decently high number in terms of probability. And when I ran the numbers for those players who finished their career before the S31 expansion, the distribution was pretty even, see the chart below: Continuing on my point above, the theoretical probability that you will win a championship in the VHL is also 12.5% (using the data from just S1-S30), which is massively larger than the NHL for example, where your theoretical probability of winning a title is a mere 3.2% (with the current 31 teams; the chances will lessen to 3.1% when Seattle joins the league). Having such a high chance to win a title in any given season, compounded with that same high chance for a HoFer to play for that same franchise, will increase the strength of the relationship. This is perhaps the biggest correlating factor between my two variables; Hall of Fame players are good. Good players = more victories; more victories = more championships. You would expect there to be a strong correlation between the two, in fact I would have been very surprised if the correlation wasn't strong. For week of 11/18/2019-11/24/2019

  20. Can't Somebody Please Hold Onto the Puck? Denver Wolfe and Balentine Kidd battle for puck possession Does the Victory Hockey League have a turnover problem? Well, based on the one game I looked at and the minuscule amount of research I did on the topic, I'd say so! The game in question I looked at was Game #19, a contest between the Vancouver Wolves and the DC Dragons, with the end result being a 5-4 shootout victory for the visiting Wolves. If I had asked you how many turnovers do you think would occur in this VHL game, what would your response be? 25? 50? 100 even? Surely 100 would be the upper limit of your guess, right? WRONG. There were two-hundred and fifty-two turnovers in this game baby. Yep, that's right, in one minute, from 17:00 to 16:00 of the 1st period, there were nine turnovers between both teams. Thank goodness we don't keep track of giveaways and takeaways right now, because the sheer amount of them might possibly brick the server.
  21. What are those? How would I qualify for those if I've had multiple players before?
  22. I think Boner was technically my last player, but he only had ~300 TPE
