Halifax’s GM Mcwolf made a big announcement this week by naming team captains. C - John Madden @Thranduil A - Bolt Vanderhuge @kayfabe A - Viktor Kozlov @Kuch9 We caught up to Viktor Kozlov to ask him about his thoughts of being named and Alternate Captain. “I am pleased to have the confidence of ownership. I would have liked to be captain but to be a leader still pleases me. If I had to lose out on captain to John it makes sense, he is good guy and a true leader. But it is now my job to protect my team to a higher level to not let my ownership down. Lets win this cup.” -Viktor Kozlov through a Translator. He seemed to be really happy when he was asked this question. Viktor feels very competent with how things are going for Halifax so far this season this his captaincy is just a cherry on top. All future teams should take notice of the trust Mcwolf has of Viktor, he is young and in experienced but seems to be trust worthy.

The VHLM season opener is just around of corner and you can feel the excitement in locker rooms around the league. I was able to sit down with Viktor Kozlov from Halifax to ask about his thoughts on the upcoming season. “I am excited for my first season over in North America. It will be my first time playing away from the home land, but from what I have seen from Halifax so far it feels like home. When it comes to the team, I think we have a good shot at competing for a championship. I feel that we have all the pieces here we just need to gel and become closer off the ice. But that being said if we are not in a position to win a cup I want to be traded. My goal is to bring as many different championships back home to Russia.” (- Viktor Kozlov through a translator.) He seems to have high hopes for Halifax and really thinks they have a shot for a cup. But he is more interested in his career and wants to win that cup even if it means he does not finish the season with Halifax. For the most part he seemed like he is going to show up everyday to do his best to win.

Age: 18 Place of Birth: Tobolsk, Russia Height: 6’8” Weight: 220 Lbs. Team: Halifax 21st Pos: Center Viktor Kozlov is a Russian enforcer looking to leave his mark in the VHLM. His goal is to lead the league in hits and face off percentage. He was selected with the 20th pick in the S64 draft. After a successful regular season, the Halifax 21st were looking to add strength down the middle. They did just that with Viktor. This is the scouting report that was given to Halifax before they picked Viktor. Positives Toughness Viktor Kozlov is 6’8” 220, he is a behemoth, and he uses his size well. He is known in Russia for big hits and his excessive use of hip checks. Viktor is not afraid to drop the gloves to back up his big hits. Kozlov uses his size to stand up for teammates and protect star players for his team. Faceoffs Viktor uses his strength to be a monster in the faceoff circle. He can lock up any of the best centers in the league but can also with the faceoff clean. He is reliable to take defensive zone draws and is very good on winning offensive draws. You are getting a true center with Viktor. Defense When Viktor Kozlov is on the ice you do not have to worry about him defensively. His positioning is flawless, and his use of his size helps him dig pucks out of the corners. When playing in Russia he was used on the penalty kill to clear the front of the crease and to stick lift anyone trying to get into the slot. He is perfect for any team trying to fix their penalty kill. Negatives Discipline With his excessive hits comes excessive penalties. Most of his penalties come from a late hit or he takes one too many strides, but it can be fixed. It’s quite sad that he is a very good penalty killer but is usually in the box. He is on the record saying that his discipline is the one thing he wants to work on this upcoming season. If he can fix this one thing, he will be a much better player. Finish Viktor Kozlov used to have a scoring touch that would be described as one of the best in Russia. But when he grew into his 6’8” frame his goal scoring did not grow with him. His shot is still strong, but his accuracy is questionable. It is probably best if you put him in front of the net and screen the goalie and hope he gets lucky and tips one in. Leadership Do not get this category wrong, Viktor loves his teammates, but he is not really the guy to lead the team. He shows up to play the game and do his job does not do much more. He will not be the guy to give a speech pre-game to pump up his team. We speculate that maybe when he becomes more comfortable with English that he may speak up more, but no guaranties.

The VHLM just had their S64 draft, which just happened to be the first draft for Halifax GM, @McWolf. He was left in a tough spot and didn’t have his first pick until the 16th pick (3rd Round) and had 9 total picks. Here is what Mcwolf had to say about some of his picks. “There were a couple of players that only recently committed to the VHLM that I had my eyes on and I was lucky enough to be able to snag two of them; Viktor Kozlov in the third and Teegan Glover in the fifth. From talking to them or people close to them, I knew I was getting studs with them.” I would have to agree with Mcwolf’s judgement on his draft class. His pick of Bolt Vanderhuge (@kayfabe ), a future first pairing defensiveman and on this pace a future VHL all-star, and Viktor Kozlov, an enforcer who is a true team player and known for his hitting and faceoff ability, was a steal of a third round for Halifax. The other player of note was Teegan Glover (@Bucky___lastard), a true center who is a great skater and has the potential to have an elite scoring touch. Mcwolf had great draft for what he was given. He had some steals in the later rounds and used his picks wisely. Mcwolf has a bright future as a GM in the VHLM and will bring Halifax a championship in the near future.
