More hockey, or more personal? 3) What stat are you focusing on improving most this offseason? 4) Are there any other VHLM players yet to be drafted that you think deserve a chance on our roster? 5) Congrats to Chet Bandy for his award win! 14. The Music of the VHL By A. Simon-Cowell-Type Part 8 Welcome back to another edition of The Music of the VHL! The past few weeks we have been covering some of the best teams in the league. This week, we will be covering a team that is a little bit of a mystery right now, the Calgary Wranglers. Calgary Wranglers @Bushito Back In Your Head, Tegan & Sara (Cover by Ryan Adams) Going into the season, Calgary was expected to be one of the leaders in the North American concert. By the end of the regular season, they were clearly behind conference leaders Seattle, in the second tier of North American team along with Vancouver and Toronto. After trading away key players in Ylonen and Starload during the course of the season to conference rivals Vancouver and Seattle, the expectation placed upon this Calgary squad was a first round exit and the beginnings of a rebuild. This Calgary squad was not to be contained, however, and beat Vancouver in a thrilling 7 game series that saw the Wranglers past their former leading man in Starload. In the next round we saw the Wranglers swept by eventual cup champions Seattle. So what's next? The song for this week, a foot-stomping Ryan Adams cover of Calgary natives Teagan and Sara's Back in Your Head, can be interpreted as from the perspective of the Continental Cup itself. A team with the history of the Wranglers deserves, and needs to be in discussion for the cup. That is the expectation of such a franchise. As such, the cup needs to get back in the head of Calgary fans and players. So we can only hope that if Calgary does enter rebuild mode, with three S69 and S70 first round picks, that it exits it soon. Thanks for reading, and stay tuned next week for more coverage!

  20. The Music of the VHL By A. Simon-Cowell-Type Part 7 Welcome back to another edition of The Music of the VHL! Last week we took a look at the team that was on top of the North American division, and since then, have entered (and spoiler alert, won!) the Continental Cup Finals as the North American Conference champions, the Seattle Bears. This week, let’s head to their European counterparts, the Malmö Nighthawks. Malmö Nighthawks @Advantage Malmo, STRFKR Just as Seattle were leading the North American Conference, so too was Malmö leading the European Conference. In fact, by the end of the regular season, Malmö was the league leader. Their high-flying offense, led by superstar veteran Matt Thompson (60 goals, 62 assists), had the most goals scored in the league with 248; an average of 3.44 goals scored per game. Considering this is only the third season Malmö has been a team for, and in their first two seasons they finished last in their conference, it is truly an inspirational rise to the top for the Nighthawks. However, it was not enough. Just today, they were eliminated in the Continental Cup Finals, swept by our North American champions, the Seattle Bears. So I think it is fitting that we choose this wistful tune from indie rock band STRFKR to represent the season Malmö had. They have nothing to apologize for, and have been nothing short of a shining example of how to build a competitive expansion team, regardless of how their final playoff series panned out, but the loss is sure to sting. Although they will certainly hurt for scoring following the retirement of talisman Thompson, look to the Nighthawks young core. With players like center Phil Marleau, defenseman Condor Adrienne, and goaltender Michael Johnson, the Nighthawks will surely build upon this trip to the finals and seek to maintain a chokehold on the competitive European Conference. Thanks for reading, and stay tuned next week for more coverage!
  21. 10/27 - 11/3 Answer 6 questions to claim 2 TPE 1) After 3 straight wins against Halifax, we ended up being victims to a reverse sweep. What went wrong? 2) In fact, after scoring 15 goals in the first 3 games, we only netted 4 in the final 4. Did we dry up, or was Halifax simply wise to our game plan? 3) Are you disappointed with how our playoff run ended? 4) Is there anything you wish you did differently this year? 5) After taking a quik 2 game advantage, Yukon has dropped the last two games to have the finals come back level. Who do you think will take the cup? 6) Who do you think will receive regular season MVP? 7) Who do you think will receive playoff MVP? 8) What do you think will happen for you this offseason? Excited for the draft? 9) For those of you above the TPE cutoff, are you looking forward to making the step up to the big leagues, or nervous? 10) Are there any VHL teams you’d like to keep an eye out for you this draft, for those undrafted among you?
