Boomcheck got a reaction from Doomsday in Tordahl vs. Wolf
Kesler got torn apart a day or two ago by referring to himself as a 'mini version of Tordahl'. I was sitting there just shaking my head and laughing, thinking Kesler was just up to his old childish antics again. Like who is this scrub comparison himself to the super studded and debonaire league superstar, Odin Tordahl, who is way too godly to be in this league. It's completely laughable that such a scrub would think of himself near Tordahl but I decided i'll look into stats more relevant to the two in their standard ELC contracts, all while trying to contain my laughter so I can point and laugh at the large gap only to find ....

What the hell did I just read? During the time they were both on their ELC contracts, Wolf has out-hit Tordahl by a large margin and it is a safe assumption to say that he will surpass Tordahl's third season. But hits don't matter right? Points! Tordahl is the god that must dominate Wolf in points but that really isn't the case. They're actually pretty damn close when it came to their ELC years. Other than the fact that Wolf is much more physical and doesn't seem to be behind much in points either.

Kesler, you were completely wrong about being a 'Tordahl'. You will actually be better than Odin.

But this all ties into the main topic of the day. What do you consider a superstar? A player with a high overall in the sim or a player that puts up high stats in the sim?

Boomcheck reacted to Toast in Claimed:Kurtis Hunter
    Full Name: Kurtis Hunter
    Position: RW
    Age: 32
    Handedness: Left
Selected 12th-overall by the Saskatoon Wild in the S39 VHLM Dispersal Draft
Selected 11th-overall by the HC Davos Dynamo in the S40 VHL Entry Draft

    S39 stats [WILD]: 71GP - 19G, 51P, 26 +/-
    S40 stats to date [WILD]: 26GP - 17G, 39P, 10 +/-

It’s not often that you hear a 32-year-old man will be making an attempt to join the VHL, but that’s exactly the case of Kurtis Hunter. This rookie was drafted in the S40 Entry Draft by HC Davos, who are looking to build a new generation of players after several seasons atop the European Conference. While Hunter is one of the older players in the league at this level of competition, there is many reasons that this player was someone that the Dynamo were looking to draft last month.

Kurtis Hunter spent many seasons in the Simulation Hockey League, bouncing around from team to team until he got his hands on the Challenge Cup as a member of the Calgary Dragons in S9. His experience from a rival league to the VHL does give him an advantage compared to other VHL rookies who are much, much younger.

In the S39 VHLM Dispersal Draft, the Saskatoon Wild took the chance on Hunter knowing that he could help lead the team, and that is exactly what he has done. The 32-year-old is the perfect leader for the younger players and that’s why he has served as the Wild’s captain for S39 and S40. While he hasn’t been the best in terms of production on the ice, it is apparent that he is a leader in the locker room. Let’s take a look at the pros of this upcoming VHL talent:

    GOOD IN BOTH ENDS

While Davos is hoping that Hunter will turn into the forward that will be able to put up a monster amount of points for them, it appears that the Dynamo prospect is the kind of player who can work well in both zones. With his 167 practice hours, Hunter has not only focused on placing his shots/passes better, but he has also focused on making sure he can get back in defensive situations and cover his opposition effectively. This makes him one of the elite talent in the VHLM and it will certainly be interesting to see if he can keep up this style of play going forward in his career, or if he will switch his focus to one side of the play.

    LEADERSHIP

As mentioned before, Hunter is exactly the kind of guy that you want in your locker room. The veteran of hockey knows a lot about certain situations that younger guys may not be familiar with, so with the veteran presence around it gives them someone to approach. That’s probably the reason that Hunter has been captain since stepping into the Wild locker room and he’ll be looking to continue that trend when he makes the step up to the VHL next season, looking to prove himself as a true talent with much more competition around him.

    EXPERIENCE

While many players have played junior or some sort of hockey when entering the VHL, they simply don’t compete to the experience Hunter has with the sport. Through his five seasons in the SHL, Hunter was able to get a feeling for the world of competitive hockey and then even stepped into a manager position before deciding to take a shot at the VHL. While it is a different beast here, Hunter believes that he will be able to adapt and use his experience to give him somewhat of an advantage over players in his draft class and around the league as well.

But of course, not everything about the veteran is a pro.

    PHYSICALITY

Being 32 years old and committing to playing in a league for the next couple of seasons is a strange choice, especially when you have much stronger and faster athletes around you. While Kurtis promises that he will be able to compete with whomever, it will take some proving on the ice to make sure he gets his message across. The older player isn’t good when it comes to his strength or checking after taking years away from the game. He’s often pushed off the puck or exploited in situations so even when he has a fantastic game, his +/- is often a concern.

While Hunter does have to work on his physical play a bit more, the Wolverhampton native believes he has all the opportunity in the world to compete in the VHL. So far this season has been fantastic for the Wild, and if Hunter continues to give the effort that he has thus far, it’s possible he will step into the VHL with a Founder’s Cup under his résumé as well.

    Physicality

Rhinehart is a physical specimen, standing at 76 inches and weighing in around 210 pounds. Impressive for a young player trying to break into the league. This young man is not afraid to throw his body around, but he still needs time to grow into the large frame of his. A tad bit on the skinny side from what most have seen, but his ability to punish is not questioned. This player does not go out onto the ice aiming to flatten someone, but to patrol the blue lines to make sure opposing teams don't get too far into the zone with his ability to stick check. Strength is not the best quality but he has expressed interest in spending more time in the gym. Jakub is not a fighter whatsoever, his careless play might drag him into one or two but that is rare; bottom line, this isn't a defenseman that looks to drop gloves on a nightly basis. Skating is absolutely his best ability, using his long leg to make powerful strides. Quick on his feet and responsible, he can keep up with the best of the prospects while on the rush or skating back to return to his position. Given his style of play, Jakub will often find himself in the penalty box for high-sticking, hooking and slashing.

    Defensive Ability

His decision making his questionable. Jakub's defensive abilities are not up to par with the best of them in the VHLM, prone to mistakes and poor play under heavy pressure. The one upside is his skating which allowed him to return to his position faster, making up for a bulk of his mistakes. He has an active stick, combined with his long reach make for impressive play but he needs to make better choices while on the ice. At times he joins the rush at the worst of times, leaving the goaltender and his partner out to dry. He is definitely willing to sacrifice the body, learning from American coaches. These are some the reasons we believe he will need a great defensive partner to cover up for his mistakes. He will not be elite by any means defensively, but he should be able to do enough to be considered a depth defenseman.

    Offensive Ability

Decent at best. He has no real stand-out qualities as a wizard or play maker, but he has the tools to become an all-around defenseman. He won't ever be a 'go-to' player for scoring but his abilities should compliment other players nicely. He has no real preference as of yet, the source coming from the games he has currently played in. Conserved but German scouts believe him to be a better passer in comparison to his shooting abilities. Vision is one of the most important factor for players and he has one of the best in the VHLM but still has to put together all his tools for him to showcase the biggest asset in his arsenal. His experience is little in the VHLM so it will be interesting to see what he can do with the season still having lots of games to be played. He has definitely made more progress than the previous season where he played in Germany. There is constant growth in other areas so Jakub should be able to put up points as the season goes along.

    Streaking to Victory

The New York Americans of the VHL have stringed together an impressive twelve game winning streak. The interesting part? They have yet to take a single loss this season, starting off the season on the right foot. This is not a game of luck, there is definitely a reason behind their amazing record. This is a team that just came off a Continental Cup victory, trading away some players due to cap issues but still continue to charge onwards to their current record. 12-0-0. Wow.

They have the most potent offense in the entire league at this point, leading the entire league with fifty two goals; ten more than the next best, Helsinki with forty two. They have also allowed the least amount of goals in league play with only twenty two allowed. What more could a team ask for? The greatest goal differential, +30. They lead the entire league in all these categories and haven't slowed down at all.

A top notch penalty kill highlights their play, with an above average power play. They average an estimated seven and a half penalty minutes per game. PER GAME! They are tame and buy into the system, playing with skill rather than just crushing their opponents in a wear and tear type of game. Their centers have done an admirable job, even with Kellinger gone, they lead the league in face-off percentage by a good margin.

Their general manager has done a remarkable job to replace his expensive and aging players for those of fresh blood. Many would have expected them to falter at this point, having lost one of their biggest scorers in the off-season and defenseman Zadarov due to cap issues but this team has gone ahead and increased their dominance to prove that those players aren't what make the New York Americans one of the best teams in the league.

Brick Wahl has proven himself to be a top goaltender in the league so far, putting up brilliant numbers but they are definitely a product of his own hard work. Their back up played one game, being lit up but still managing a win, proving that Wahl contributes to the American's amazing streak. Tom Slaughter's one hit has to be the main reason why New York has done so well, also putting up twenty five points and thirteen goals in just twelve games. He also has yet to take a penalty, what a team player! Connor Low is primed to break a VHL record, hoping to take home his fifth Labatte trophy. Tordahl and Xin Xie Xiao have proved to be exceptional, both blessed with tremendous two-way abilities.Bennett Wahl, the best Wahl, looks to be having a breakout season with his nineteen points in twelve games, a much better start than last season. Sam Keller couldn't have chosen a better time to begin his career in the VHL. He might only have six points but is getting a chance to learn from the best so he can be properly groomed for next season and the play-offs. Milos Denis. He only has three points, all of them being assists. Though he also leads the entire league with his +/- rating of +15! Way to go Milos!

An amazing cast of players, genius tactical moves by the coach and a cohesive group of people that compliment each other well. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they will go streaking through to another twelve games. They have the star power, the hardware and determination. Where do you think their streak will end?

I haven't exactly decided on a plan for Rhinehart but i'm going to tamper my expectations to be a tad bit more realistic than when I first came here. I've only managed to create one VHL caliber player in Bravehart and that was after spending 3 seasons down in the minors. Unluckily for Jason my first season in the league was my contract year for the Calgary Wranglers. Thirty games in and I was tied for league lead in points with Jenkins and one goal above him to also lead the league. It was funny because I was at 175 TPE and doing all that. Even my own teammates started to question the league's sim engine like Rybak, who had been recently drafted but had a statline that paled in comparison. I led the team in every major statistical category, which turned out well for me since I was a two-way player. I decide to milk the Wranglers for a big money contract that I proved later on not to be worth. In the remaining stretch of games, especially after the deadline my stats declined and dropped like an anchor.

This time around I expect to just be a decent depth defenceman, maybe a #2 if i'm lucky enough and committed. Nothing fancy and I can't guarantee you the best of my activity but i'll lurk around and post from time to time so Rhinehart can be a serviceable player for any team that has him.
