  6. Life as the GM of the Mexico City Kings This season’s media spots are going to be a series related to things I experience as the new GM of the Mexico City Kings. I am writing this as of March 17, 2024 (Happy Saint Patrick’s Day). The focus of this specific media spot will be on the Draft itself which occurred on March 16 ,2024, and the aftermath. I went into the draft having 1 center and 1 defender already on the team. So, as I was planning for the draft, I had to set some priorities. My first priority was another reliable defender, my second priority was a goalie, and my third priority was a second center. I figured if I could get those 3 things, I could then use my remaining picks to build around those pieces and flush out a competitive team. As luck would have it there were several exceptionally reliable defenders available in the draft. Picking eighth I did watch a couple of individuals I had my eye on leave before I got to draft, so when it became my turn, I picked the highest TPE defender available which also happened to be my player Felicia Hardy. It was not my plan to pick my player, but it did allow me to add a strong defensive presence that in some ways I could ignore so that I can position my time more towards helping the other players on my team build for the future. The draft continued and again, as should be expected, one of the two goalies I had my eye on was taken. As it came to my second pick at position 18, I quickly snapped up my second target and secured my goalie for the year. I am excited as this goalie looks to be well positioned to be a strong performer throughout their career. With my third pick i deviated slightly from my priorities as I could not pass up the player who was available and I am glad I didn’t. On pick 28 I grabbed a steal of a pick with Anthony Simmons II, A strong, good TPE earning, highly discord active RW. I knew they were going to be an excellent choice and the fact that my DM’s lit up with trade offers and congratulations by numerous GMs within minutes of my pick solidified my thoughts. After deviating slightly with my third pick I knew I needed to get back to my priority list and with my fourth pick (38 overall) I grabbed my center. Gavin Bebard, an offensive minded center with a great earnings pattern. This meant I had picked up all my expected pieces and now I just needed to fill in the remainder of my lines. Pick 48, allowed me to pick up another very reasonable defender who will help create a top line, which currently looks like it will be Chuck E Cheese, returning Kings defender with newly drafted Vanman Stein. Second defensive line will be Felicia Hardy and either a DBot or if lucky a waiver or free agent defender. Pick 58 and pick 68 allowed for the addition of 2 up and coming wingers. Owen Two and Matthew Ohl will provide good depth to round out the forward lines. Currently Mexico is sitting with five forwards, so line combinations are going to need to wait until closer to the season start. Hopefully, that will allow me to pick up an additional forward in free agency or through waiver to make 2 full lines. Even if we must start with a Bot, I don’t expect it will be long before that last piece joins the team. So, there we have it, the strategy I had in mind going into the draft and how things turned out. I am happy with where things sit in Mexico and believe we have an excellent shot at being a competitive team.
  7. As this is our first Press conference post draft we will keep it fairly basic: Answer any 3 questions for 1 TPE and answer all 6 for 2TPE, note answers must be full sentences 1) What are your expectations for this season? 2) What is your weekly goal for TPE earning? (Let me know if you have any questions about how to earn more TPE) 3) Have you completed the 2 Career Tasks available to VHLM players, are you going to complete them? 4) Would you like some input on how to build your player? What sort of questions do you have? 5) Do you like mini challenges, do they motivate you? 6) How active in the discord locker do you plan on being, is there anything that you want me to post there? (stop by and say hello)
  8. You were drafted last night as par of the VHL draft, as you move to the VHL you will be on the Malmo Nighthawks

  10. We will be heading into the draft by week end so I thought I should write a Draft related Press Conference. 1) What has been the best part of your offseason experience? 2) How are you feeling going into the season 93 draft? 3) What would be your biggest expectation for your new team? 4) How involved in the locker room do you expect to be? 5) Is there anything the GM can do to assist you with your player? 6) Evaluate your draft experience, was there something that stood out to you?
  11. A little while ago I wrote a media spot discussing media spots, or how I like to make the process easier by selecting a theme that I can build on each week. I threw out some options that I was thinking about. Since then, I have taken on the position of GM of the VHLM Mexico City Kings which has helped me make the selection. For season 93 I am going to do a Media Spot series focused on my thoughts as a GM. Specifically, this media spot is going to be focused on my introduction to the draft and how I am sorting through things. Thought 1 – Scouting Scouting is the process of identifying various individuals who can be drafted and trying to gather information from them that will help you in the process of selecting people for your team. The thought patterns are divided into 2 main camps. First, will the player accept being drafted by your team and be willing to play for your team? This is mainly an issue with recreates who may have either prior bad feelings about a team or maybe trying to play for every team and you would be a duplicate. Secondly, will the player be around for the entire season and build at a rate high enough that they will be of value near the end of the season. This is mainly an issue with First Generation players who may not have fully committed to the VHL experience. Thought 2 –Strategy Like any process where you must make decisions and potentially react to other GM decisions it is important to have a strategy. What positions are most important? How do you evaluate Recreates against First Generation players? How will certain individuals fit in the locker room? What positions do you fill with higher TPE players up front and which positions do you allow individuals to grow into? Which positions do you leave for waiver claims later? How do you evaluate current TPE growth against your ability to draw growth out of players, or the ability to teach them to grow? Thought 3 –Draft Day Trading The draft is set from a perspective of picks and order but that doesn’t mean changes can’t occur. When do you initiate a trade to move up or down the draft to try to acquire a stronger position or to ensure a specific pick? How do you respond to people looking to change draft picks? Do you trade within the draft year, or do you move out to future years to improve your draft position there? Thought 4 – How the hell do I actually do this? There is an entire piece of this that relies on the ability to use the technical programs to do a draft and to be honest being a player does not help with that portion of the VHL. I have watched the draft presentation many times, but you just see names pop up on a screen, you don’t see how they get there. Outside of all the aspects related to drafting is the issue of inputting decisions into a system and making a pick.
  12. I am the new GM of Mexico City and as i am starting to look at scouting and drafting I think it would be helpful if the 1st gen indicator showed on the draft list. Thanks. @Will @Josh
  13. 1-week changes everything One week ago, I was contemplating how my next season would look given I had just retired Molly the Cat and had created Felicia Hardy. I was looking at how I would want to build a defensive specialist defender who was tough on the competition. I was looking forward to being drafted, to joining a VHLM team and potentially meeting some new people. I was looking forward to earning and applying TPE and seeing immediate growth. It was a chance to go back to the VHLM and do things differently, this time with a little knowledge. I could repeat successes and avoid mistakes. I felt relaxed as I waited for the offseason to finish and Season 93 to start. Oh, how things change in a week. A week of change in the league and change personally. In the last week 5 individuals were named to the position of GM in the VHLM. Among those 5 was the naming of yours truly to the position of GM of the Mexico City Kings. I still don’t really know why I applied. Maybe I thought I had been around long enough that it was a natural next step. Maybe I was just testing the league to see if they would name a complete newbie to a job. Whatever it was I am now stuck with the outcome. As I said in my article last week, if I am going to do something I am going to do it all in. So much has changed in the week, now having been named the GM of the VHLM Mexico City Kings I am also looking at how I go about building a competitive VHLM team. I must learn a new series of systems, gain a better understanding of the SIM engine and how minor changes impact the outcomes. I need to engage and mentor several inexperienced players to potential greatness. Start a process of evaluating each potential draft prospect, determine which ones I will scout and create a draft list. I now must focus less on my player and turn my attention to everyone else. The good news is that I think I have a basic understanding of things now. I had the opportunity to sit with a VHL GM and review the systems that allow for drafting, trades, line submission, and I think I have a handle on them. We will see when I finally need to use them. I feel like I have integrated into the VHLM GM discord, although I am still trying to figure out which GM has what team. I have also started my process of draft scouting. Wow is that not an easy process. I think at this point I only have several questions and very few answers, maybe that doesn’t matter, maybe it does. Who knows? So, the questions I have right now: Who is going to be picked before my turn? Who is going to stay around for the season? What positions do I need/want? What positions are the most important? Does player build matter? Time will tell, but this is definitely a different week than last.
  14. 1) I have been working hard to be prepared for the playoffs, hoping to make a great showing and win this tournament. 2) Looking forward to the draft, hopefully my team is competitive but really hoping to meet some new people and have some fun. 3) I enjoy the community 4) Best thing I can do is keep building my TPE and building out my player 5) Definitely looking to visit some family after the tournament is over. 6) Favorite holiday is Christmas.
  15. One last set of games for Molly the Cat and Leonard Triller
  16. Hey Louie_Z.  Just wanted to reach out.  I am the new GM for Mexico as of last night.  I see that you are a first generation player.  As I just retired my first player I know what being a first gen is like and off seasons can be rough, especially when they are long.  Hope you keep checking into the locker room and keep up completion of tasks to build your TPE.  If there is anything I can do to help let me know.  Looking forward to a great season 93.

  17. Hello Team, as this is my first Press conference as your GM, we are going to keep things fairly basic: 1) What has been your experience with the Kings so far? 2) What did you like most about the Locker Room? 3) What did you like the least about the Locker Room? 4) What is your goal for activity in the VHL over the next season? 5) Is there anything I can do to assist you in reaching your activity goal? 6) Are you focused on making your player competitive in the VHL or are you here for fun, describe the experience you are looking for?
  18. Well, I may have done something extremely stupid. As happens frequently we have had a couple VHLM GM step down, we know of one VHL GM and who knows what else may happen over the next few days as we move into the offseason. As expected, that resulted in Spartan posting in the Job Interviews section of the forum that there will be hiring. Normally I ignore these, I am usually fairly busy and so don’t want to take on more than I can manage. Yet for some reason I felt it was time for me to put my name in and apply. Now there are already several candidates who have put their names in also, some I expect that this is not their first time and some that I believe have even held similar positions previously. I don’t necessarily expect to get the position. In fact, I am going to start this article by detailing some of the reasons that the Commissioners should not hire me. First, I have 0 experience. I have never been an official AGM; I have never been involved in managing for world cup of JST. I know nothing of the software for SIMON, the draft system and have limited knowledge of how to manage a discord server. I would have a lot to learn. Second, my work life keeps me extremely busy between January 1 and March 1, I know that is now seasons into the future but is something that needs to be considered. Third, I am old and sometimes have a challenging time connecting with the younger individuals within VHL. I tend to ignore individuals that are acting immaturely which doesn’t help when you need to be mentoring them. Okay, so now that I have told you all the reasons why I shouldn’t be a GM. I have only one reason why I should be chosen. If I choose to do something, I do it to the best of my ability. That means you won’t be chasing me to get lines, I will be active in prepping for the draft and in the draft (if it is at a reasonable time), I will work with my players and try to help them be the best they can be. If selected I am all in. So, there you have it. I may have just done stupid but if that is the case I am going to do it all the way.
  19. 1) When you want to be an elite player you need to get used to this sort of thing, whether it is tournaments like this one or progressing through your career playing learning to play with top talent is a must. 2) I am working on a number of areas, right now, puck control and physical play mainly. 3) Only played for a short time in the VHLM, looking forward to next season after my draft 4) The JST is a fun and exciting tournament 5) Definitely rely on the teams nutrician specialist to help pick my meals, we have a great staff that helps make sure we maintain top performance 6) Looking to help my team in any way I can and to continue developing into an elite defensive specialist
