Theme week is upon us and the league waited with anticipation for the topic to be announced. I know that at least one locker room had quite extensive discussions about potential options and were looking forward to the challenge of expounding on the chosen theme. It was with immense joy that they accepted this season’s topic: VHL Lore. Okay I will admit that not much of that may be true, but it could be, like anything else in this league there is probably some semblance of reality but mostly some fictional story. Like the introduction to this Media spot the Lore of the VHL has some semblance of reality but is mainly a sequence of fictional narrative pulled together over time. Some of it resembling more fiction than truth. This media spot is going to address some of the myriad items of Lore that I have experienced in the VHL, some of which I will provide commentary on, other may just be noted and have a few questions looking for the actual history, an expounding of the Lore that exists. First is the constant discussion of STHS (Simon) having a God like plan, a mind and consciousness of its’ own. Simon is the great equalizer in the league, especially in the playoffs. Simon resembling a godlike being grants favor to some and curses others and no-one can figure out why. The reality is that probability may for the most part bring most outcomes close to the mean, it will always have its’ outliers. The improbable will occur, and when it does, we as players in the league tend to notice. I myself on more than one occasion have made note of these outliers in an article series I called Simon WTF. Another piece of Lore that has shown itself over the time I have been in the league is the constant chant of #BlameCole. Now as much as I have seen this many times I myself know nothing of the original of this. Is Cole really to blame, for everything. Is Cole bigger and more important to the outcome of the VHL than Simon himself. Is Cole really to Blame. I don’t know, maybe someone can enlighten me on the origins of #BlameCole. Another mysterious piece of lore, very similar to the #BlameCole phenomenon is the #SpartanSucks chant. More than once I have seen posted within the general, VHL and or VHLM discord threads the singular expression of #SpartanSucks. Now I don’t feel like I can discuss with any sort of clarity on Spartan’s sucking, his ability to suck, his status as one who sucks. The chant seems to be unclear of what sucking is in relation to Spartan. All I know is that many. many times, I have been informed by those on discord that #SpartanSucks. Lastly, I am going to bring up the last of the constant discord Lore items, the devourer of the VHL departed, Fong. I would love someone to enlighten me on the reason we have this entity called Fong that feels it necessary to comment every time they remove someone from the VHL discord. Why cannot people fade away into nothingness quietly, why do we need to announce their demise, their final existence as if they are being eaten by some great beast.

The drawbacks by design When I first decided to build Felicia Hardy the plan was to build a defensively minded defender who focuses on puck handling, skating, physical play, and strong play in the defensive zone. I feel that I have stuck with that plan so far. I am currently in my second season in the VHL, taking up a constant position on the second defensive line for HC Davos Dynamo. Currently my player statistics are as follows: Checking 67, Skating 89, Strength 57, Puck Handling 88, Passing 88, Scoring 62, and Defense 93. At this point, the build is getting more difficult to advance. Instead of taking 1 or 2 TPE to move forward it is taking 3, 5, 8 and even 10 TPE just to advance one position, and multiple advancements to move up one full point in any category. AS I know I will have some additional growth, but it will be limited. I want to suggest that I am reasonably happy with how my player is integrating with the team. To be honest I am finding it hard to evaluate pure defensive play within the Sim reporting structure. Stats like +/-, hits and blocked shots can provide some basis for evaluation, but it doesn’t provide any relevance for things like puck retrieval, steals, pass interception and defensive zone clearing. Potentially we have an issue in that the system is focused on offensive output and so is not designed to provide an adequate measure of defensive effectiveness. Potentially one day we will get some additional statistics but until then I may need to just accept what is available. Now I also find that I am surprised by the outcome that I have had. In my first season I was tied for second among rookies in offensive performance with 65 points. This season I am running slightly ahead of a point per game pace with 33 points in 31 games. I will admit that level of production is beyond anything that I was expecting given the focus away from the scoring statistic. The fact that I am being involved in the offensive side of the game is a huge plus to the team. Now all this said I must wonder how Felicia Hardy would be doing if they got the opportunity to play on the top line with the higher offense players on the team. Would Felicia’s offensive output be even higher is they got more time with the likes of Antonia Bucatini and Grimgor Ironhide. At this point I don’t expect that we will find out, but it is something to ponder. For now, I keep earning TPE, keep training, and keep preparing for the day that Felicia takes the reigns of the top defensive pairing. I expect that it will happen in the next couple seasons as it gets exceedingly difficult for a GM to not have an above 1000TPE player not playing top minutes, but I plan on making it difficult for it not to happen sooner. In the meantime, I continue putting everything into the decisions I have made, even if they have drawback in the present.

Okay time for the Halloween Week Press Conference 1) What costume is your player wearing to parties this year? 2) What is your favorite thing about Halloween? 3) What is your least favorite thing about Halloween? 4) What is your favorite Halloween treat? 5) What Halloween treat do you despise most? 6) What are you giving out for Halloween this year? Remember to answer in full sentences. -
At this very moment, as I write this article, most teams in the VHL have completed 16 games. Some of the teams have had a strong start while other, well, haven’t even shown up yet and their records reflect that. It is odd to say but some teams are pretty much out of a playoff position already, it would take a miracle to change that. With that said I think the fact that some teams are just so underwhelming that I theorize it will impact the points earned but some players in the league. Specifically, I am looking at the European Conference that right now appears to have 3 teams that are highly competitive and 1 team that is running above average. The remaining 4 teams are competing among themselves to not be last, with one of them defaulting into the play in spot in the playoffs. Under a format where there are only 4 teams in a conference that look to have any ability to win on any given night, the players on those teams get the ability to shine when playing the bottom teams. If I look for example at the 3 games that Davos (A team in the top of the conference) has had against London (a Team in the bottom of the conference, you get the following: Game 22 of the season saw a scoring focused game where Davos won 7-4. Game 30 of the season saw the first encounter between the 2 teams. Davos won a 6-2 game, dominating the score sheet Game 125, the third matchup between the teams saw a 7-1 one sided affair. In three games Davos was able to put up 20 goals which is well above the average expected by any team. In fact, London in their games this season have given up 5 or more goals 8 times. Now I don’t want to pick on London as this article isn’t about just one team being uncompetitive. If I look at London, Warsaw, Prague and Helsinki you can see the following. Between these teams they have had 20 games that have been lost against a team that scored 5 goals or more. What that means is that the top players on the other teams are getting the chance to put extra tallies in the net, padding their stats for the season. How this will impact things like season awards, predictions, VHFL, fantasy zone, Supercoach, we will see as the season goes on. Until then all I know is that I am going to continue watching, to try and take advantage of the disparity and maybe gain an extra TPE or two. Every year there are always team that are expected to do better but I think this year it is a more drastic disparity that in prior years. A difference that is focused in one conference. Sixteen games shouldn’t be far enough into a season to call the playoff race, and positions are still unknown, but I can confidently say that I think 4 teams have already locked themselves into the playoffs, now we will see where exactly they end up. Taking advantage of the other 4 teams will determine where they end up.

Press Conference Week of Oct 27. We are 12 games into the season, I would like to know your opinion: 1) How do you feel your player has performed so far? 2) How do you feel our forwards have performed so far? 3) How do you feel our defense has performed so far? 4) How do you feel our goalies have performed so far? 5) Evaluate your GM so far this season? 6) Pick one of our conference competitors and evaluate how the have done so far? -
Felicia Hardy, Rookie All Star team nominee, US born 6’8” 250lbs beast of a stay-at-home defender had a breakout rookie season in VHL’s Season 95. Their production in the offensive zone was better than they expected as they put up 65 points (second amongst rookies) in 72 regular season games and 13 points in 14 playoff games. Defensively, they held their ground with 138 hits and 139 shots blocked during the regular season and 42 hits and 31 shots blocked during the playoffs. The only place they may have lacked is on plus/minus but that could also be attributed to anchoring the second line with a rookie goalie starting for the HC Davos Dynamo. Season 95 was a learning experience for sure, one that Felicia took seriously, and one that they plan on building upon for Season 96. Now with a full year of experience under their belt Felicia Hardy feels that the bulk of the preparation for the VHL has been completed. The focus from now on is to fine tune their play in both ends of the ice, and to maintain their fitness for the rest of their career. During one interview with Felicia Hardy, they noted that “training has changed for me, it is no longer about building core skills and abilities. It is now about fine tuning, learning to adapt to individual players, individual situations. It is now about being consistent with and without the puck and taking advantage of every minute of ice time I get.” With Season 96 fast approaching Felicia Hardy can be found at the arena most days, working out with weights and on a variety of cardio machines or on the ice. They spend significant amount of time alone on the ice each day working on a variety of skills. Hardy is known for being intense during the team skates and practices and on more than one occasion has used her size a little more aggressively than they should. However, talking with the coaching staff they don’t seem to mind Hardy’s intensity. The defensive coach made comment during one skate, “we don’t want the players to pull back on hits during practices, the other teams aren’t going to do it during a game, and we don’t want our players doing it either. This is the game; you need to be always prepared for what is coming at you, if you are not, you will be injured and potentially severely. The best way to be prepared is to practice what you are expecting during a game.” The consensus was that players needed to learn to play physical but disciplined games. The other teams need to fear going into the corners to get the puck. New acquisition to HC Davos, Mina was quoted as saying “I don’t envy the task of the other team's forwards, Hardy has a powerful stride and a large muscular frame, give them even half a step to get moving and they can plaster most players into the boards with enough force to knock any puck loose. I’m glad to be on their side so I don’t have to deal with the constant punishment.” From what we can tell Hardy seems prepared for the upcoming season.

We have had the opportunity to sit with Felicia Hardy, tough, grinding defender for HC Davos Dynamo, recently named to the all-rookie team for season 95, to discuss their offseason and what we should expect at the beginning of season 96. Felicia, thanks for sitting with us. We wanted to sit with you to ask about your offseason activities, particularly in respect to your preparations for season 96. Can you let us in on what you have been doing to get ready for the upcoming season? It is my pleasure to be here with you. This offseason has been a combination of activities for me. Obviously like most players I took some time at the beginning of the offseason to get some rest. The VHL is a physical game and anyone playing up to their full potential is going get some bumps and bruises during the games, especially during the playoffs. As such it is quite common for players to take a few days to relax and heal from those minor bumps and bruises. After taking time to rest, during which I reconnected with family and friends, I put my focus on preparing for season 96. I have done two main things to prepare. First was working on my physical conditioning and on ice work. Second was spending some time with retired VHL defender, Victory Cup and 2-time Continental Cup winner, Marcel Janser. Felicia, can you provide us with some details on the on and off ice training that you do during the offseason? My training is broken down into a few areas. First, I always put in some work doing strength training. VHL players these days are larger and faster so to compete you need to focus on your overall strength especially throughout your core. Second, I focus on my speed and agility. It is one thing to be able to move down the ice in a single line at top speed but in the VHL that very rarely happens, you need to be able to move from side to side to handle the competition who is in your way. Third, I spend time working with the puck. For a defender like myself, being able to get the puck out of the defensive zone and in the hands of our talented forwards is paramount. That means spending time working on puck handling within tight quarters as well as working on ensuring tape to tape passes even with obstacles in the way. Felicia, what can we expect from you at the start of season 96? Season 95, my rookie season, was a great start to my VHL season, but I know that the other teams have learned what I can do and will be focusing on stopping that. So, in season 96 I am going to need to bring more, which is why, when given the opportunity to sit with one of the greatest defensive players this game ever saw I took the opportunity. Marcel Janser gave me a lot of good advice on how to view the game, he has many unique perspectives on the league. It was an honor to get the chance to sit with him and learn from his wisdom. I am hoping to put much of that wisdom into practice as we start this season.

The offseason between season 95 and 96 is progressing quickly. The VHL draft is complete, we sit less than 24 hours from the VHLM draft and free agency has started, or at least discussions have. With all of this going on it is hard not to get excited about the beginning of season 96. This season however is different as the season 95 offseason started with a huge announcement. The VHLE finally is being shut down, the evil stepsister within the VHL framework is no more. So, what does that mean for the GM in the VHLM. The obvious first details that the GM must deal with is the redistribution of the VHLE players that do not have high enough TPE to move to the VHL. The ability to have and use players between 200tpe and 400tpe will now create a completely different framework for building lines in the VHLM. The fact that most players will spend at least 2 seasons in the VHLM even if they are strong earners could completely change the strength of teams over time. General Managers will now have the requirement to manage players over several seasons, keeping them active, growing, and productive. Outside of the obvious addition of 200 to 400TPE players there are a few more subtle things that General Managers will need to be aware of. In a one season and done mentality draft picks tend to have more value than strong earning player. That now changes. Players values regarding other players and draft picks will now change within the trading landscape. Couple that with the continuation of a 3-season rights period and there may be a situation where you see lower earning players trade value decline as they progress in the VHLM but don’t move to the VHL. Next concept that General Managers will need to deal with is that teams will potentially have full rosters. Bot’s may be an outdated concept in the VHLM. With players staying longer it will allow GMs to hold a larger roster, potentially having a full 6-4-1 framework, maybe more depending on how long each player stays on a team. In a league that has not had the draft classes, or recruitment to manage a full roster it has resulted in lop sided team strength. That is set to disappear in this new league structure. Recruitment and free agency use to be especially important when it came to building a playoff contending team. Adding one or two depth pieces on to a team had the tendency to allow it to better position its’ lines and allowed it to do better throughout the postseason. Now that teams should have close to full rosters the impact of a waiver player should be minimal. Oddly enough there is some thought that a later season waiver may actually hurt a strong team. Well, those are my initial thoughts on how the changes that have occurred between season 95 and season 96 will impact the VHLM general manager position this season and over time. What we do know is that the VHLM changes effective season 96, and I expect the better GMs will be able to take advantage of the changes

I had a conversation this week with a player who I will leave unnamed, the conversation was about how difficult it is to write enough words to do a media spot. I listened for a while and then suggested that they try a few things to make it easier. I figured since I had the conversation with one individual maybe others thought the same way and so I am going to put this media spot together as a guide to make media spot writing easier. 1) Pick a topic that gives you plenty of content to write about. I have spoken on this before, as I have commented on the fact that I like to pick a theme each year for my media spots. Having a topic that provides either new weekly content (maybe a topic of how my player did in the sims this week) or is so exhaustive that you could never finish the discussion (your players review of restaurants in the city they play). By picking a topic that has plenty to discuss it makes it easier to produce things to write. 2) Be passionate about the topic, this may seem obvious, but I have written several boring articles just from the perspective of getting a media spot done. Yet those articles I am passionate about tend to be the easier ones to write. I expect that is because the words are coming from my head faster than I can type them. So, if there is something you are passionate about go for it. No reason you can’t write about your players Pokémon collection or their love of chocolate desserts or their dislike of snakes. I would recommend if you wanted to read an article that is passionate find anything written by Gustav, just understand they may be long. 3) Use your juicy words. Okay let me explain, many years ago Jacob had a teacher that tried to get her class to use descriptors by calling them juicy words. Remember people that media spots aren’t business reports where you want to be clear and concise, you need to treat them more like a J. R. R. Tolkien story, if it takes you 3 pages to describe the wind and how it blows through the trees along the edge of the river, then so be it. If that last sentence didn’t give you the idea let me give an example. Most of you know my players name is Felicia Hardy, so if I were writing an article about what Felicia Hardy is doing in the offseason, I could write something like: Option 1: Now that Felicia Hardy has some free time, she has decided to go to France to see some sights and walk along the beach. (Not bad at 22 words) Option 2: Felicia Hardy fresh off the gut-wrenching defeat to Riga has decided to get away, France with its food, with its wine, with the sights and sounds seems like an ideal place to escape to. The Louvre, the Eiffel Tour, so many great sights to see. But it is the Mediterranean beaches on the south coast, the sparkling blue water, the soft warm sand that draws Felicia Hardy in. A long quiet walk will do them good (75 Words for the same thought) 4) Do research, however, don’t plagiarize. If I keep on the same theme as above, I could write about Felicia Hardy’s tour of the Louvre, now I will fully admit I have never been there personally, but with a couple clicks of a button I can be on the museums website and can get all the information I need to put an in-depth description of the museum together. Just avoid the desire to copy and paste from the website, plagiarism is against the rule, paraphrasing is not. 5) Always use your player’s full name, have any of you noticed I always say Felicia Hardy, again that is Felicia Hardy. It is a little thing but if your issue is getting words, then more are always better. So now that I am well over 650 words in this little lesson on how to put together a media spot that will be long enough to qualify you should see that with a little forethought it really isn’t that hard.

1) Obviously I was happy about beating Moscow, honestly it allowed me to eliminate Jacob. 2) I do believe in curses, which is why I have made the appropriate sacrifices 3) Davos has exceeded my expectations from the beginning of the season, now that we have made it this far I would like to go to the finals. 4) Somewhere between Bucatini and AKK, not sure which yet. May come down to a last game decision? 5) For me it is Moscow but that is because I compare versus Jillian Woods 6) Doesn't matter to me either way 7) Have already completed my sign up and posted to the Mexico locker room to encourage them. 8. None that you can answer, unless you can explain all the inner workings of STHS as it sometimes doesn't make sense.

Moscow Menace versus HD Davos Dynamo Season 95 I am going to start this article by Quoting the VSN Season 95 playoff Preview Moscow (1) vs. Davos (4) This series should be the most one-sided series on paper, with Moscow having a significant edge with both their forwards and defensemen. For Davos this series will likely be dependent on Grimgor Ironhide, Antonia Bucatini, and most importantly Aleksanteri Kaskiniemi-Kekkonen who will need to stand on their head to give Davos a chance against the defending champions. Without much more to say, there’s no reason why Jarmo Ruutu and company will not win this series. Davos may steal a game or two, but this should be all Moscow. Prediction: Moscow in 6 VSN vote: MOS 8, DAV 2 It is the last couple lines that I would like to address. Specifically, “there’s no reason why Jarmo Ruutu and company will not win this series.” Now before I get started, please understand that nothing stated below is meant to take anything away from the spectacular play of Grimgor Ironhide, Antonia Bucatini and David Jokinen who all stepped up huge in this series. But Davos had a few secret weapons that became the reason why Moscow not only lost but went down in four (very tight games). First, I want to introduce you to Davos Wingers Forum Content and Yaroslav Trunov. These two wingers have accounted for 11 points each during these playoffs. Of note Forum Content is a +10 so far in these playoffs has only 2 penalty minutes and has one of the game winning goals. Yaroslav Trunov has 10 shots blocked for a forward and has netted 2 game winning goals. Both these players have stepped up significantly in these playoffs and account for much of the reason that both Warsaw and Moscow are going home to play some golf this offseason. Second, I want to introduce to you HC Davos Dynamo’s clutch depth. Johnny Tsunami, Sunset Moth, and James MacAvoy typically get deployed to eat up minutes of the game, their normal role is to stop the other team to allow the 1st line to rest so they can come back out and score. These playoffs are different. Each of these players has stepped it up and came in clutch to get game winning goals. Closing it down and lighting it up. Third I would be remiss if I didn’t make note of rookie goalie and current brick wall who we lovingly refer to as AKK. Aleksanteri Kaskiniemi- Kekkonen has stopped 317 shots so far, holding a .937 save percentage and 2.11 goal against average. It is going to take a lot to get something past him them these playoffs. They are not only standing on their head but doing a full break-dancing routine at the same time. Lastly, I want to introduce you to Rookie defender Felicia Hardy. Currently sitting tied for first in team points at 13. (second overall in the playoffs) Felicia Hardy was on the ice for all four game winning goals in the Moscow series, had points in 3 and closed out the final game themselves. Currently holding a 26.67% shooting percentage Felicia Hardy has come to play. The HC Davos Dynamo fan base has put together a petition that has asked the VSN to place a retraction to their article, they have obviously been mistaken in their article about the season 95 playoffs specifically regarding the Moscow Menace and HC Davos Dynamo series when they mistakenly printed that there was no way that Moscow wouldn’t win this series. The reasons are obvious, Davos came to play hockey, every single player. Next time do your research before putting together such biased journalism.
-
I like to think of the Moscow versus Davos series as the battle of the Rookies. For Moscow there is Jillian Woods and Maverick Goncalves the top 2 picks in their draft class. For Davos you have Felicia Hardy, Johnny Tsunami and Aleksanteri Kaskiniemi-Kekkonen. We will see which teams rookies step up and make the difference in this series. For those of you keeping track right now Davos' rookies are leading the way.
-
Season 95 is complete. Well at least the regular season is. That gives Felicia Hardy the chance to sit back and think about how their rookie season went. The Season as a Whole Season 95 was good for Felicia Hardy and the HC Davos Dynamo. In an extremely tough European conference making the playoffs is a good start, which is an improvement on the prior season. Overall Davos was able to compete against any team, which puts them in a good position for the upcoming playoffs. How they will finish is yet unknown, but they do have the ability to stand up against any team they face. The Team Being drafted by HC Davos Dynamo may have been the best thing for Felicia Hardy. Joining the team and taking on the position of second line defender in their first season allowed them to enter with a lower level of stress, allowing them to focus on doing things right and focusing on just playing the game. Being on the top line with that higher level of expectation can sometimes be difficult for rookie players. Felicia Hardy feels that they found their groove part way through the season and once that was achieved regular production started to happen. In addition to getting regular ice time in the VHL, joining a team with veteran, and well-respected Defender, David Jokinen helped significantly. To be able to work and train with someone who possesses that level of talent and experience helps a young player immensely. It is the little things that differentiate the excellent players from the good players in this league. It is the slightly different approaches to the game, being able to watch and learn from a player who makes those little things look so easy definitely helped Felicia Hardy excel this season. Lastly, HC Davos Dynamo has a wonderful training staff, dedicated to helping their players achieve the best results they can. Working with them day in and day out has been extremely helpful with Felicia Hardy’s development. Performance Felicia had a tremendous season when it comes to overall offensive production, especially since Felicia Hardy considers themselves a defensive defender. Ending the season tied for second among all rookies in points was beyond their expectations but something they are willing to build upon. Starting your career out with a better-than-expected performance on a team that is quickly improving should mean remarkable things going forward for Felicia Hardy. Season 96 and beyond With David Jokinen retiring this season that will open a first defensive line position, one that Felicia Hardy will position themselves to take over. The added minutes with the team's top players should move Felicia Hardy to the next level in their game. It will be a big step and one they will need to earn, but Felcia Hardy feels that they are ready for the challenge. Felicia Hardy is looking forward to Season 96 with excitement. Before that can happen, Felicia gets to experience their first playoffs in the VHL and is going to put everything they have into that experience.

If you are wanting word count improvement your next player should be named W W W W W W W W W W (etc) by putting in the space software like Word will count each W as a new word. Think how easy it would be to hit the minimum word count when your name could count as 10 words by itself.
