New York All-Star Hopefuls Through Day 82, the New York Americans have the best record in the VHL. They have won ten games straight thanks in large part to especially exceptional goaltending from Blake Campbell. With the recent announcement that the All-Star Game will be taking place during the season, speculation about who will make it has begun. The format may be a bit different, but like usual, we can expect to see several players from the VHL's top team. The Americans have both the most goals scored the fewest allowed; they have the best power play and the highest face-off percentage. As a team, they are top two in just about every meaningful statistic. This isn't something you accomplish without multiple stars on your team, and the Americans are no exception. It is likely that this will be reflected when the list of players selected to the All-Star Game by the Board of Governers is revealed. Here are my thoughts on who could make it from New York. Blake Campbell has been lights outs as of late G Blake Campbell Hands down, Blake Campbell is the most impressive goalie in the VHL right now. He has been playing out of his mind as of late; over the last eight games, he has a 0.975 save percentage, allowing just four goals. He has five shutouts in that span, bringing him up to a league-leading ten so far. He also leads the league in save percentage (0.930) and goals against average (1.54), both by a significant margin. At this point, the Aidan Shaw Trophy is his to lose. It's safe to say he'll be making his third All-Star Game start, and his fourth appearance overall. C Thomas O'Malley Thomas O'Malley is one of those veterans who could be having a down year but still make it to the All-Star Game in large part due to name recognition. He will need no such luxury, however, as he is having the type of season we have come to expect from him. On a quest to finish third all-time in points, O'Malley is currently third in the VHL with 72 in 46 games played. Like Campbell, he is a league leader in several stats: goals (36), shot percentage (16.0%), and face-off percentage (68.2%). Playing in his eighth and final season in the VHL, he will likely be voted as a starter for the sixth time. RW Lloyd Light Along with O'Malley, Lloyd Light signed with the Americans this past off-season to play his last season in New York. In an effort to bolster their front line, Light switched to forward where he has been on the first line with O'Malley for the better part of the season. He has found much success at his new position with his new teammate; he has 70 points overall and his 50 assists is good for second in the league. Adding to that, he has a respectable 157 hits. He should be making his fourth straight All-Star appearance, with a very real possibility of making it a fourth straight start. Lloyd Light is enjoying a successful final season. D Biggu Kyanon With 46 points in just as many games, Biggu Kyanon is fourth in scoring among defensemen. Although his 67 shots blocked are not on par with many of his peers on other teams, he leads New York in that category. With New York leading the league in puck control, Kyanon will have his opportunities limited. He has a very nice 12.9% shot percentage, having scored 16 goals, including nine on the power plays (second in the VHL). Kyanon would be making his second All-Star Game appearance. Similar to Light, he has a good chance to make it, whether or not he's a starter is the real question. It could depend on the makeup of the team to which he is drafted. C Edwin Reencarnacion Edwin Reencarnacion is part of the next generation of stars in the VHL. While O'Malley and Light have stolen some of his glory in New York (for one season only), Reencarnacion proved himself last season with his first 100-point campaign, making his first All-Star Game start. This season, he is top ten in goals with 28. Out of necessity, he moved to center when the Americans tradedd Gifford Shock early into the season, and it has not seemed to slow his game down. He is not a shoo in to make the All-Star Game, having just 60 points thus far, but he is tied for seventh in points per 20 minutes.
