  5. 1) What can't I love about it? He was brought in high overall and given a letter. People included myself expected physical, rough play and boy have we got it. The powerplay goals are a great cherry on top! 2) I think the Steel! Sure there's a difference in the standing but the games are often close and physical and that's how some of the best hockey rivalries are formed. 3) Absolutely. It's bittersweet to see my Marlins split up but it will be fascinating to see where players in my draft class end up throughout their career. 4) None by name I suppose. I'll be drafted by both VHL and VHLE teams and just hope I can help both as best I can in my player's journey. 5) Animals by Nickelback. The band as a whole really is a guilty pleasure. Something i'll play entire albums in the car by myself but never with the guys. 6) Growing up I was absolutely infatuated with the prequel movies. Star Wars has since been a hobby of mine from reading the older books/novels to researching random characters and falling down rabbit holes, wasting away nights at a time.
  6. Playing in a league for a specific team isn't quite the same as a tournament meant to represent your country. But I understand your point of view here.
  7. Early this Monday afternoon, former San Diego Marlins defenseman Fradin McGryer had received his answer regarding the WJC tournament and not in the way he'd imagine. The Massachusetts native had ambitions of playing for team USA, never shy about his national pride in social media posts, interviews, and other forms of media. The young defender had found himself posted as making the tournament, but for team Asia. Due to no other roster being released yet, this only could've meant he did not make team USA. McGryer quickly went online to clear up his perspective and his decision to deny going out and taking part in the tournament. "It's obviously incredibly upsetting, you know. Not getting the nod from your home team despite how hard you've worked. There's a lot of good guys and a country as big as we are someone has to be left out and that's how things are. It's just sad, I think, how overlooked players who focus on the physical or defensive aspects of the game are. These temporary GM's in charge of tournaments focus on offensive numbers and the same stats as everyone else. It lacks complete personality and we might as well let robots play for us at this point. And to not even be told by my own country's team, it's disrespectful. I wouldn't count on me ever taking part in, supporting, or even acknowledging this tournament after this point. If I wanted to go watch games entirely built on watching the score sheet get run up, I'd watch my younger siblings play locally. And just to be clear, I do not take this as an issue with the players, they're just doing their thing and performing to their best ability. But the suits at the top? Disgraceful to the heart of the game." The clearly emotional and passionate defenseman is set to be eligible for both VHL and VHLE draft soon. Scouts and fans alike will still have plenty of hockey to watch the physical player take part in both the ProAm tournament and Junior Showcase Tournament. In the JST Fradin plays top line minutes for the Warriors, a middling team in the tournament. In 22 games Fradin has 17 points to include 5 powerplay goals and 8 powerplay points total. Leading the league once more in penalty minutes at 68 and 61 hits. The emotions run high in this player with 4 fights and a misconduct already in this tournament. Some would call this passion, others would call it liability. Regardless it's clear what you're getting in this player and what he's set himself on being. With the rosters for the WJC yet to be released it will be interesting to see how much truth there was to the Massachusetts native's words and who took the spots over him in this tournament. It should also be a note who will be playing for team Asia who is not actually from the area. Will we see a trend in players refusing the be extras cast out by their homes? Or will this be an outlier in an otherwise exciting tournament? 518 words for 6/4/2023
  8. It's great to see you getting back into your hobby of graphic design. Seeing a fantastic player like Keegs showcased by your art definitely enhances it. The under glow added to the lettering and spikes along the outside really make them pop better with what would otherwise be a blank canvas due to ice being well. Bland. This is very well put together and I'm excited to see the things you come up with from here. Review 76 words for 5/28/23
  9. 1. Fantastic. A ragtag group of free agents and a star goaltender behind them. It was unfortunate we couldn't secure the cup but I can't help but feel pride in the community we built in the locker room. 2. Fradin met expectations by my standards. Big hits, point production picked up in the playoffs, not afraid to drop mitts. That was my mission from the start of the season and I feel he met it. 3. More hits! If you're gonna rack up the stat for it you might as well shoot for being the best at it. Maybe a little bit of offense as well. 4. Fradin's headed up to Europe! Excited to get to the next level in the VHLE and get to know the people up there. 5. Well I had to love being the guy who'd never close his mouth. But it was endearing to see people pop in every day/every other day just to check on each other and banter a bit. I enjoyed the guests from other teams and felt welcomed every time I popped in. 6. Workin' and workin' some more. Work picks up in the summer so my days will get longer. Won't change me stopping in to talk to the Marlins!
  10. Game six of the founder's cup semi finals ended in a 4-2 victory for the Mexico City Kings to clinch the series and secure their spot in the finals. San Diego, a team of mostly if not entirely free agents that they slowly gained throughout the season had almost convinced the hockey world that the ragtag group of players could secure a cup without most of the roster playing even a full season. Players like Shubham Anand, Baby Moo Moo, and Fradin McGryer had made the strongest cases for their team throughout these playoff series. Shubham Anand or "Scuba" as his teammates endear him had an offensive explosion in the post season. Picked up in the first week of the regular season, the India native had seven goals and five assists in just ten playoff games. With twelve points in the post season, this high speed forward will definitely be on the radar for teams in the coming draft and will absolutely be a steal for anyone looking for a high poise player come the same time next season. The English winger Baby Moo Moo entered the league halfway through the Marlin's regular season and quickly introduced herself to the league as an electric playmaker. Showing high chemistry with Marlin's Captain Sjin and fantastic defensive responsibility, She became a staple for San Diego's top line alongside Shubham and Sjin. In ten playoff games the winger had five goals and ten assists for fifteen total points. With her still being a developing player who hasn't completed a full season yet, it is likely she will play another season in the VHLM and certainly will be a great compliment to any team looking to give their team that extra push towards the cup. Fradin McGryer was thought to be a purely defensive defenseman coming into the post season. The Marlin's Alternate Captain was added to the team just days before the start of the regular season and made himself clear to be a physical presence teams had a hard time getting around. This was no different in the playoffs. The young defenseman had thirty-four hits and fourteen blocked shots in his ten playoff games. A point per game player in the post season, acquiring two goals and eight assists, also showed heightened responsibility in reducing his time in the box at ten penalty minutes total. The six-four Boston native intends on playing in the VHLE next season, and stayed after the game to offer a statement to the media. "It's rough you know? Losing, losing at home in such an important game to us and the fans. I'm not going to nitpick at our game because I thought we played our style out there every night and gave the other guys our best. I think that's just a testament to how strong the competition is down here in the M and just how talented that Kings team is. They have a fantastic core put together and I'd especially like to highlight Alex (DeLuca) out there. He was the model of a two way defenseman out there and I genuinely hope to see him lift that cup because him and his team battled hard and certainly earned it in my eyes. Next season's going to be interesting for sure. I'll be taking this offseason to help my teammates get a handle on their plans for the future of their careers and being a team of mostly free agents, it's unlikely most of us will play together again. Gaut's (Olivier Gauthier) going to be the toughest change for me for sure. I wish him the best in the big show next season, he's a beauty to have in the locker room and undeniably talented on the ice. I'd like to take this time to thank the Marlin's organization for taking the chance on me. To thank my teammates for putting everything they had out there and working day in and day out with me. And especially would like to thank the fans of San Diego for coming out and supporting us every step of the way." The Marlins organization now must move on to focusing on the draft. With their pair of first round draft picks they certainly have the potential to bring some of the core back and still be a competitive team next season. With Brad Marchand and Sjin planning to stick around in San Diego, their goal scoring will still be as steady as this season. Big questions will circle them around goaltending and defense with the departure of all the defensive core and their goaltender Olivier Gauthier, the Marlins may end up making some unorthodox picks high in the draft to cover their bases. 784 words for week ending in 5/21/23
  11. San Diego Marlins Press Conference Week of 5/21/2023 1. Playoffs are well on their way! What did you think of the Houston series? 2. Do you or your player have any pre-game rituals for playoff games? 3. Obviously we're going to make the finals, we're the Marlins! Who do you hope to see in the finals, Mississauga or Philly? (Unless Halifax comes back from it's 3-1 deficit by the time you answer this, lol.) 4. Mexico City's up next for us, How will your player contribute to the series? 5. By the end of playoffs who do you think leads the Marlins in Goals, Points, or Assists? (One player for each or one to get all three if you really believe in someone.) 6. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What's your go to if you're not in a rush?
  12. Trying to improve! Hope to produce better each time. The fish is Nemo's dad who's name is Marlin. That was a joke I was trying to play on!
  13. Fradin McGryer is a well known tough guy amongst the VHLM. And for those that don't know him heading into a game, he makes sure to introduce himself. The Boston native was a waiver pickup at the start of the season and began a bit sheepish. Blocking shots and holding the blue line as best he could. But as he developed and found his groove with the team, he's developed his physical game to the point where even his teammates have lightheartedly and openly referred to him as a 'Goon'. "It's certainly something our team was missing I felt after the first handful of games. We play such a defensive system that tensions obviously run hot out there on the ice. And when you have, you know, players flying by you on the ice like Sjin and Marty B it's sure to get under your skin. I just like to be the main focus for the other team. I don't go out there and intend to fight every night but if one's going to happen I won't let anyone else out there answer the bell before me. In a way it's sort of fun too. Riling up the bench and the crowd by throwing a few bombs with another guy, it's a good time." McGryer in his first 72 games has amounted 233 hits (5th in the VHLM) and 113 PIMs (5th in the VHLM) to include three fighting majors. McGryer is also the only player to be assessed a decisive win in the league which he makes sure to remind his team during the 'Goon' jabs. The defenseman did manage 58 points this season with 50 assists. He may not be Doug Glatt but he certainly should be a player teams plan for in the coming playoff games. 299 words for 5/21/23 and also so @Spartan doesn't smite me.
  14. Scuuuuuba! Great season and great teammate. We love having you around buddy.
  15. Welcome to the show bud. It's a great community here, don't be afraid to ask around for answers, especially on the discords!
  16. The San Diego Marlins are actively in a vicious three way fight for the top seed in the VHLM and the Prime Minister's Cup alongside the Mississauga Hounds and the Mexico City Kings. We will let other qualified writers speak on the other two teams' star players and their playoff chances. Today we will be highlighting the three players who are above and beyond the rest on a very strong Marlins roster who will give their team the edge over the rest for the Prime Minister's and Founder's cups. @Mint - Sjin is the first line Center and the most complete player on the team. A Bentz trophy Candidate, Sjin leads the league in goals with 41 on the year so far and is two points shy of leading the league in points. With a +46 for the year so far and spearheading the top penalty kill in the league, it would be hard to argue any player in the M is more built for the playoffs than the Marlins' Captain. Not to mention this will be the fourth consecutive VHLM playoff appearance for the S86 champion. This is a player who has a shot at the Ethan Osborne, Alexander Chershenko, and Matt Bentz trophies respectively. This outstanding performance could very well earn him the Mitch Higgins MVP trophy should he win even two of the three previously mentioned. @McGriddy10 - Brad Marchand will be entering his second consecutive playoff appearance in his second year within the show. Marchand greatly improved is offensive production since the previous year. (S87 11G 17A 28P) Now sits at 39G 37A for 76P in 66 games on the season. Reducing his time in the box from 36 PIM to 22, Marchand has become an offensive cornerstone for the team's second line at only two goals shy of the league lead, which again so happens to be another Marlins' player. Averaging two hits per game, Marchand has come into his own. And if he keeps to his namesake, we'll certainly have some borderline antics in at least one of the coming playoff series. @fonziGG - Olivier Gauthier has blossomed this year into a full fledged Benoit Devereux caliber goaltender. With 45 wins in 66 games holding a .926 save percentage, teams can fully expect to be robbed of surefire goals by an absolute wall in-between the pipes. Gauthier has set the Marlins' record for both wins and shutouts during this run and could still pass the 50 win mark on the season. With a now rounded out blue line in front of him his numbers should greatly improve from last year's .897 save percentage in the S87 playoffs. These three specifically were highlighted due to their experience and regular season play. It should come to no surprise to anyone who has watched the Marlins' games this year, and it is expected their success and contribution should continue in the post season. Should the Marlins win S88 you will absolutely see these three in contention for the Skylar Rift trophy amongst the other hardware this team is expected to collect. Regardless of where these players end their career seasons, Marlins GM @Arce should be nothing but proud for his hand in developing this team. 534 words for 5/14/2023
  17. Don't worry I certainly notice the split. I know better than to count you guys out.
  18. Fradin McGryer was seen taking the ice as the top pairing today in warmups alongside explosive waiver pickup Walter Fitzroy Jr. The Alternate Captain has played the last ten or so games on the second pairing and had begun to see a decline in his physical and offensive presence. Getting a glimpse of the warmup lines it seems they hope he can shake off the rust and return to his wrecking ball like form as the team readies for the playoffs. Fitzroy Jr. has eleven points in his fourteen games with the Marlins. Slotting in nicely alongside their leading offensive defenseman Marty Byrd, the coaching staff hopes he'll be able to pick up more of the offensive responsibility now that he's to be paired with the team's defensive cornerstone and number one shutdown man. An important note for McGryer despite his step back offensively, he still leads defensemen in assists at forty-five, which also places him at second on the team. Giving him more ice time with VHLM Goal frontrunner Sjin could lead the Marlins to an explosive finish of the regular season to earn them the top overall seed. It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see how it plays out for San Diego. 204 Words for 5/14/2023
  19. 1. Philly's been a middling team in the M as of the last week or two. Slowing down where some of the other teams are pulling far ahead. But I mostly chalk this up to the engine not being a big fan of the city. Their roster is strong, and I think their blue line will come through for them come playoffs. 2. Bonfires. I love gathering my friends as the sun sets and falling down as the flames rise up. 3. It's my first season for my first player in my first sim league. I think he's done better than I expected and has fit in really well with this team. 4. Maybe a little more fighting majors and a little less roughing minors. Be a little more team friendly if I'm going to the box. 5. Well unless @fonziGG counts, it'd have to be Rachel Weisz. I loved the Mummy movies growing up. 6. Kevan Miller was my favorite Bruin growing up. A player who didn't shy from playing physical and came in undrafted to help his team, much like how I have tried to emulate with the Marlins. Hence why I took his number!
  20. When's payout?
  21. It's no secret that great leadership is the glue that holds any team together. Whether that be a real world sports team, a workplace environment, or even here in the VHL. Today I would like to highlight a few of the minds that keep San Diego active and thriving. I'll start from the top and that's none other than @Arce. The old timer's been in the league for a while but that's never killed his enthusiasm for the sims or the players around him. RC makes sure to check in multiple times throughout his busy day, checking in both publicly and privately with members of the team and getting a general feel for what the vibe is that day. As a GM he's fantastic at guiding his AGM to really find his place in the league and learn the ropes. He's often on top of pushing out announcements for our newer and busier players on new TPE opportunities and is all around a very kind and fun guy to interact with. Speaking of AGM's, first year leader @McGriddy10 has been exceptionally enthusiastic to fill his role. From jumping on trades for players that request them, to keeping his eyes on new players being created throughout the day. Much like our GM, Griddy checks the locker room throughout the day to check out the going conversations and add his two cents on things and answer questions RC may not have time for. A perfect supporting GM for San Diego who will definitely lead a great team one day. Now we move on to Player Captains. Something not officially holding any power or responsibility, but the ones in San Diego take it upon themselves to take that extra step for the teammates. McGriddy and myself being Alternate captains, I won't beat the hammer too hard on Griddy nor really upsell myself. But @Mint is a class act as a Captain. His player is an eternal M player chasing records, but that doesn't lead him to hiding in the dark until it's time to check his numbers. Always pushing the conversation in the locker room to keep narratives rolling, Sjin is one of the hearts of our discord and team. Often being very inclusive to members of other teams when they would like to join in on what's going on. (Mostly former Marlins). He will also analyze the games with myself to bring new ideas to the GM core for line ideas, changes, and potential pickups. Even getting his friends from his life to join in on our community to expand the love of the league. As a team of mostly waivers it was entirely possible for the team to slowly reduce itself to IA after IA. And perhaps this all is just the ramblings of an over impressed first season player. But I wanted to use this opportunity to not only earn some TPE, but also appreciate the Marlins organization as a whole. When questions are asked, they're answered. When people need help there's little delay. Players notice things about each others builds and compare notes. The Marlins dish out guides, spreadsheets, and forum pages on how to improve from other members of the community. They give each other kicks in the pants when they're being lazy about earning that week. Again, it may be just rambling or boasting to most of you, but this is what I firmly believe to be the secret to the success of the Marlins this year. From top to bottom everyone involved in the organization is excited and involved in the most important part (In my eyes) of the VHL, community. 605 words for week ending in 5/7/23
  22. 1. The only answer is the correct one. Leadership. We've had a lot of new additions and everyone from the GMs, the veterans, and even some of the more savvy new players have been on top of answering questions asked and pushing each other to stay active and updating. 2. Goat. Goat. GOAT. Man's a beauty. Great goalie. Great guy in the locker room. Can't have done this without him. 3. Scuba. He's been tossed around the lines and lived in the shadow of Sjin's goal scoring. But he's been steady and offered constant points even in the few games we've been blown out, he's offered a point at least. 4. It's going in the book of grudges. It's just like the 16-0 Patriots losing to the giants. Boston will remember this for a long time. 5. Same thing as always. Lots of hiking trails and taking my youngest brother out fishing on the Atlantic. 6. Minus the couple of Habs fans? Fantastic. Love the Marlins. Love the guests that hang around. It's a fun atmosphere and I hope to see it continue on.
  23. Hope you update your player more often than 2BC uploads videos. Lol. Welcome back to the league!
