Joshua Schwarzer's hockey journey continues as he was drafted 12th overall by the Cologne Express in the VHLE Entry Draft. He's eager to embark on this new chapter and make his mark with the two-time defending champions.
 

Joining a championship-caliber team like the Express is an incredible opportunity, but it comes with high expectations. The Express have set the bar high with back-to-back championships, and Schwarzer is determined to contribute to their legacy.

"It's an honor to be part of the Cologne Express," Schwarzer commented. "I'm ready to work hard and prove myself in any role that they need me. The team's success speaks for itself, and I want to be a part of their continued dominance."

However, the Express's forward depth presents a challenge. With ten forwards on the roster, playing time may be at a premium, but Schwarzer is undeterred.

"I'm prepared to give it my all to earn a spot in the top 6 and get some power play and penalty kill time," he stated with determination. "Competition only makes us better, and I'm excited for the challenge."

1. Is this your first JST? If it is, what would you consider a success - for you personally and for the team? If it's not, what way your biggest JST success?

First JST I believe, don't think it was a thing back when I used to be in the league. Success would be making the finals at least I think!

2. How closely do you follow offseason tournaments? Do you follow them even when you're not directly involved?

Usually only follow along with the ones I'm involved in. Checking Index and LR every now and then
 

3. The first sim is behind us, as I'm writing this. 8 games total, 6 of them saw 10 or more total goals scored, majority of forwards and a good chunk of defensers are over point per game. Do you think this trend will continue throughout the whole tournament?
A little late answering these but that first sim was definitely an anomaly due to a different sim version being used.

4. Hand in hand with plethora of goals scored go at first glance underwhelming goaltender stats. No goaltender has a save percentage .900 or higher. Do you think any goalie - perhaps our own Dalkr Vidarsson - can break it and finish with better looking stats than this?
Of course, once again I have the benefit of hindsight so things were corrected to be more standard.
 

5. Don't be afraid to overreact, what do you think about your player's and our team's performance so far?
Player seems to be doing alright, we seem to be giving up a good chunk of goals though so wish I could perform a bit better defensively.

6. (After I post this, I'm gonna look at the form and name team's captain(s) so this question is relevant) What do you think of the leadership group of this season's Royals? Do you have some history with any of them?
Should be a good group of guys. Some great guys like Zetterberg, Kaleeb, and Tetricide who seem quite active in the league.

Schwarzer Eagerly Anticipates Offseason Opportunities

Joshua Schwarzer's hockey journey is taking an exciting turn as he looks ahead to the offseason. Recently, he received the remarkable news that he's been selected 18th overall by the Royals for the upcoming Junior Showcase Tournament (JST). The opportunity to showcase his skills in this prestigious tournament has left Schwarzer elated.

"I couldn't be more thrilled," Schwarzer shared. "The Junior Showcase Tournament is a significant stage to demonstrate what I can bring to the ice. It's a chance to play against some of the best young talents out there and make a statement."

This selection also bodes well for his future in the VHL and VHLE Entry Drafts during the offseason. When asked about his draft goals he said:

"Based on my JST draft position, I'm aiming for a late first-round or early second-round pick in the VHL draft," Schwarzer revealed. "And in the VHLE draft, I'm eyeing the late third round or early fourth round. It's an exciting time, and I'm ready to put in the work to make these goals a reality."

   Both have their pros and cons. Perhaps a slight preference to live action myself.

Happy with the performance so far! A bit of a production drop since being traded from Houston but understandable given we are a much deeper team!

Solid team wide contributions from everyone on both ends of the week.

   Not at all, I think we have a solid team that just took some time to get clicking.

   I would like to think my player has had a bit of an impact in addition to consistent TPE earning from many of the other players.

4. What is one thing your player has excelled in this season?
   I have been able to score some big time goals for the team to help them in picking up wins

   Not a strong preference either way but I think I would have more options at McDonalds

   I like a nice late summer/early Fall where it's still warm but not melting hot.

Didn't pay a ton of attention to the team in the first week but since I joined it has been nice to see the team pick up wins!

I've seen both Alexandros Mograine and CGY Janser posting results and encouraging the team to keep up with updates in the LR, so I would vote for them.

I have been pleasantly surprised by my own player's performance.

Looking forward to my first full season! STZ has offered help to some of our newer league members in the LR which is nice to see!
 

2. How long do you plan to stay in the VHLM? Do you plan on eventually being in the VHL or staying in Europe (I hear it's nice there)?
Given that I am pretty much at 200 TPE I would assume I play in the VHLE next season and then hopefully make the VHL someday!
 

3. Who's the most suspicious player (by name, style, or karaoke skills) in the league?
Reinhard von Kongming  for sure. I don't think that is his real name and he is always shifty when I see him

4. If you participate in #general on the main Discord, who's your favorite regular and why? If you don't, why not?
Don't regularly check the channel but have sometimes when I play games with some VHLers. Big Nykonax fan personally.
 

5. If you had an opportunity to have the whole world/league listen to you during a press conference and could say anything, what would you want to tell them about?
I would probably just get shy and awkward and mumble to myself.

I generally like questions more focused on my player/team performance but open for anything!

The versatile player, initially anticipating a mid-second-round selection, expressed a hint of surprise. "I was definitely caught off guard dropping to the third round and landing in Houston," Schwarzer admitted. "I had my sights set on a slighter earlier pick, but I believe everything happens for a reason."
 

Schwarzer's outlook remains optimistic as he eagerly anticipates the upcoming season. His agent’s familiarity with the Houston Bulls' General Manager, STZ, adds an element of comfort. "Having a connection with STZ gives me confidence. I know the team values my potential," he shared. I am indeed and had the 2nd overall pick, ended up selecting Frank's player so I hope he has a good season!

Seems like a healthy decision if the 8 teams weren't full. Will be interesting next year since I believe the S91 draft class is larger than usual.
 

3. What are your expectations for your player entering this season?
Hope to play an increased role this season with Houston now that I have some more TPE under my belt. Put up some points and have some solid defensive play

VHLM Draft Combine Culture Fits

I was excited to head into the VHLM Draft Combine to participate in some draft interviews. To my surprise all the teams had some interesting questions to gauge culture fit. Here were my takeaways for each team:
 

San Diego Marlins: Their coach apparently likes to have players trade their flippers for skates during practice so they can swim through the ice like... fish out of water? I guess they won the cup, so the practice paid off.

Mexico City Kings: These royal rulers of the rink are always ready to serve up a fiesta on ice. With their mandatory pre-game taco feasts, I worry I may need to take some bathroom breaks during the games though.

Houston Bulls: This team sure loves their physical play. The GM made it very clear I need to be prepared charging onto the ice like a bull in a china shop – or rather, a hockey rink.

Las Vegas Aces: These high-rolling aces are betting on their skills to win the jackpot. They believe in going all in every play and when we lose, we must all blame Simon for dealing us a "bad hand"?

Saskatoon Wild: From the wilds of Saskatchewan, players on this team aren’t allowed to shave their beards all season. Also we must break into a howling chorus after a goal – it's all part of the wilderness vibe.

Philadelphia Reapers: My former team! The reapers are here to harvest goals and take no prisoners and also do weekly team scary movie nights.

Ottawa Lynx: The coach is big on prowling the ice to be ready to pounce on any loose pucks. And also practice drills where we chase laser pointers around.

Mississauga Hounds: These hounds are hot on the scent of victory, and they're not about to let the competition escape. I was sold about this fit but I’m unsure about the post-game tail-wagging celebrations!

Miami Marauders: I’m already bought into the culture in Miami just need to always talk like a pirate, score goals and take home the championship. I mean plunder goals and take home the treasure chest.

Halifax 21st: These guys are big into analytics who needs the 20th century when you've got the 21st on your side? These players are armed with the best of modern technology, I just hope they don’t replace me with an AI.

1. what do you think about the new salary cap announcement? 
Haven't followed the exact specifics but I think it's good for a league to adapt and make changes as the league changes rather than always just staying stagnant with "old rules" that may not make sense anymore.
