Game 2: S40 HOF Tournament

It was offensive madness in Game 1 of the Hall of Fame Tournament with a Jardy Bunclewirth deflection winning it all for the slight underdogs of the S18 era.

Up to that point, the star of the show was Tukka Reikkinen, whose hat-trick, including two short-handed goals and two third-period ones, led the late comeback for the post-S18 era. Outdated VHL rules, however, meant his 2nd period fight with renowned pussy Adam Schultz stripped him of a deserved first star.

The Three Stars honours instead went to the top line of Bunclewirth, Markus Strauss, and Cam Fowler. It was all them in truth, with a combined 10 points led by S21 Scott Boulet Trophy winner Fowler's 1 goal and 3 assists. The offense-first top line of Reikkinen, Leeroy Jenkins, and Pavel Koradek could do little to thwart them. The top defensive pairing of Daniel Braxton and Ryan Sullivan, considered the best defencemen on the ice, was also criticised for failing to contain forwards more than 10 years their senior.

The second and third lines largely cancelled each other out with goals apiece for Phils Gerrard and Rafter and somehow a -4 for two-way forward extraordinaire David Smalling. The TPE heavy lines of Lars Berger, Anton Brekker, Jukka Hakkinen, and Alexander Chershenko, Jarvis Baldwin, Volodymyr Rybak, haven't really delivered. Yet.

In goal, a bit more reliability for the older folks, especially and unsurprisingly Aidan Shaw and Daisuke Kanou. CAL G and Benjamin Glover on the other hand, might be considered the culprits for the loss.

Close encounter on the whole though, so satisfied, neither team makes any line-up changes.

S18s aka Old Boys Club

Jukka Hakkinen - Lars Berger - Anton Brekker

Tarik Saeijs - Phil Gerrard - Mathias Chouinard

Post-S18s aka The New Kids

Puck drops in 10 minutes. Be there or be square.

Leeroy Jenkins is hungry for retribution as he wins the opening face-off against Markus Strauss and we are off!

Cute passing by the New Kids' top line but it all comes to naught as Adam Schultz steals a loose Tukka Reikkinen pass. There's some brewing beef between those two from Game 1.

Dump-in by current top scorer Cam Fowler retrieved by Ryan Sullivan but the move again falls apart as Sullivan is DESTROYED by Jardy Bunclewirth. The overtime hero's confidence is sky high at the minute.

Let's see if the second lines can muster anything better.

Chershenko, Baldwin, and Rybak are flying on these skates like they haven't retired, their millions of TPE carrying them like wings. Baldwin goes for an ambitious shot!

Excellent block by David Walcott. That could have shattered those aging bones.

But here's Rybak with the follow-up!

DENIED by the glove of Aidan Shaw. Probably the star performer of the goalies in Game 1.

It's Phil vs Phil in the face-off circle with the older Gerrard prevailing. Some casual passing moves and lost pucks as both teams try to settle.

Another change and Ryan "The Terminator" Sullivan is using this as a chance to start an attack. Quick pass to Rybak, who shoots!

Where was that going? So wide of the mark we'll all try to forget it even happened. Just like the Vasteras IK J20.

Still searching for some real excitement here to follow up on Game 1.

Reikkinen looking to kick-start another hat-trick with a SHOT!

Shaw gets in the way and the rebound flies past everybody out of the Old Club's zone.

David Walcott of all people is on it, he takes a shot at Labatte!

REBOUND!

Labatte smothers Walcott's tame follow-up. Scoring goals was never Walcott's strong suit. Hitting people on the other hand....

Speaking of hits, Reikkinen is getting feisty as he attacks Japinder Singh near the boards.

Sullivan picks up the puck behind him and sets Pavel Koradek off on his way! Wrist shot by Koradek!

Cheeky tip by the omnipresent Reikkinen!

Aidan Shaw is having none of these meddling New Kids' tricks and games.

There is no beating Shaw when he is at his best, whether it's in S20 or S40.

At the other end, Labatte may need to match Shaw's heroics as the Old Club's third line is on the attack.

Gerrard and Saeijs with some quick passing, a Saeijs shot comes back out off Labatte.

Rebound!

Chouinard fans on the shot and then kicks it wide of the net. Someone is trying too hard to look like a Hall of Famer.

Will there be any goals tonight? Tukka Reikkinen is the only one who seems to want to score but his shot is once more denied by Aidan fucking Shaw.

Shaw 4

Reikkinen 0

It's worth remembering Reikkinen's worst season was his first one, Season 25, when Shaw was still in the league.

Coincidence? I think not.

That top line for the New Kids really has a point to prove to the invisible Bunclewirth-Strauss-Fowler trio.

They're not going to achieve much with Pavel Koradek missing the net.

In a rare Old Club attacking move, Chouinard wants to show he can hit the net with the puck.

He can't because Mitch Higgins rigs his way to a shot block.

Alexander Chershenko wins a face-off against Lars Berger in a case of dual personality.

Baldwin gets the puck, pass back to Chershenko.

Pass back to Baldwin, SLAPSHOT.

Wide of the net.

Rybak tries again, old teammate Chershenko gets his stick on it!

Does Shaw's mere presence in net scare the puck away? Shots on target will be an excellent start for the New Kids.

Perhaps the older generation will show them the way. Fowler and Strauss rekindling that old magic in the neutral zone.

Strauss with the shot.

Nope, another miss.

ADAM SCHULTZ with the follow-up!

A yawning Labatte deals with it with no problem.

We're midway through the first period as a Mitch Higgins penalty leads to a two-minute powerplay on which the highlight is Chershenko winning a face-off against Bunclewirth. Take that Jardy!

Not that there is much action after the event but David Knight does get excited by David Smalling hitting David Walcott. Of course Walcott loses the puck. Smalling is terrifyingly strong and there's now a mag article to prove it.

Time for new Davos GM Jack Rielly to get aroused as Jarvis Baldwin hits the shit out of Cam Fowler.

Baldwin advances with the puck, rolls back the years and.....

Adam Schultz ruins everything by deflecting it into Aidan Shaw's glove.

Daniel Braxton shows his feelings towards Schultz by hammering his former New York teammate into the boards.

Smalling approves and uses the empty space to sneak into the Old Club's zone and get a shot off!

Wide, around the net and back to Rybak.

He tests Shaw with a WRIST SHOT!

By which I mean Shaw has to flex those old muscles and gather in the puck.

A rare Old Boys Club shot by Jukka Hakkinen is stopped by Labatte as we enter the last minute of the Aidan Shaw Masterclass.

Braxton proceeds to hit Saeijs and steal the puck.

He sets up Koradek...

HE MISSES THE NET AGAIN!

Braxton looks to make up for Koradek's failure and attempts a slap shot!

Aidan Shaw shuts the door. No one is suprised.
