Good evening and welcome to the Season 93 VHLM awards!  I'm your host, Lucy, and I'm very excited to be spending this hour with you in honor of the VHLM's top performers.  While the VHLM is a league aimed at developing the next generations of young VHL players, it is not a league without competition.  While players grow and develop through the VHLM ranks, they come up against serious competition in their peers across the league, making for an exciting awards race every season.  This season was no different, so without further rambling on my part, here are the VHLM awards for Season 93!

To begin the evening, I'd like to take a moment to congratulate two teams for their accomplishments this season.  Firstly, congratulations to the Ottawa Lynx and @Grape on clinching the Prime Minister's Cup this season.  The Lynx were the class of the field in the regular season and finished the season with 109 points and a 50-13-9 record.  They would go on to make a strong run to the Founder's Cup finals, but fell short in 4 games.  Take nothing away from Ottawa, however, who had a remarkable regular season with an incredible team and are very deserving Prime Minister's Cup Champions!

Next up, we need to recognize the S93 Founder's Cup Champions, the Saskatoon Wild.  While they finished the regular season in 3rd place with 98 points, they were absolutely dominant in the playoffs, only losing 3 games en route to claiming the league’s highest honor.  In the first round they took care of the Mississauga Hounds in 5 games.  In the second round, Saskatoon knocked off the 2nd place Halifax 21st in 6 games.  In the finals, the Wild were absolutely unstoppable as they cleaned up the 1st place Ottawa Lynx in a 4 game sweep.  It was an impressive playoff run from a fully loaded team, made all the more impressive by the fact that they were led by a rookie general manager, @Dadam30!  Congratulations to the S93 Founder's Cup Champion Saskatoon Wild!

And now on to the individual awards for the VHLM Season 93.

The Skylar Rift Trophy

Awarded to the player deemed to be the VHLM's most valuable player in the playoffs

"This award was renamed from the Esposito Trophy to the Skylar Rift Trophy in S42. Rift epitomised the modern VHL by winning two playoff MVPs, in the inaugural season of VHLM expansion franchise Yukon Rush and leading the expansion Quebec City Meute to their first Continental Cup. In addition to his player achievements, Rift's role as VHLM GM and vocal member of the VHL Board of Governors had significant impact on the VHLM" - VHLM Awards Page

Here are the nominees:

@FreshOceanCod Ocean Codoller (OTT) - 16 GP, 7 G, 9 A,16 P, +2, 6 PIM, 17 HIT, 5 SB

@Tuchy Austin Goulet III (SSK) - 11-3-0, .914SV%, 2.19 GAA, 0 SO

@Dynamicmlb_42 Jacob Longstreet (SSK) - 15 GP, 8 G, 8A, 16 P, +5, 16 PIM, 24 HIT, 1 SB

@JCarson Felicia Hardy (SSK) - 4 G, 10 A, 14 P,+5, 12 PIM, 24 HIT, 31 SB

The nominees for this award all played important roles for their teams and it comes as no surprise that 3 of the 4 nominees were part of the Founder's Cup Champion Saskatoon Wild.

The lone Lynx among our nominees, Ocean Codoller, racked up 16 points in 16 playoff games, leading the way for the Lynx who would be overcome by the Wild in the finals.  Saskatoon's goalie, Austin Goulet III put together an 11-3-0 record with a .914 SV% and a 2.19 GAA as the Wild clinched the Founder's Cup.  Jacob Longstreet scored 16 points in the the Wild's 15 playoff games and recorded the 2nd most goals in the post season with 8.  Finally, Felicia Hardy was a steady presence on the Saskatoon blueline while also pitching in 14 points, delivering 24 hits, and blocking 31 shots.

This season, there was a tie in the votes between two of our nominees.  Both were highly instrumental in their team's Founder's Cup victory and were especially important to the Wild's +17 goal differential in the playoffs.

Spoiler

Congratulations to the S93 Skylar Rift Trophy winners @JCarson Felicia Hardy and @Tuchy Austin Goulet III

The Alexander Chershenko Trophy

Awarded to the player who leads the VHLM in goals during the regular season

"This award was renamed from the Hull Trophy to the Alexander Chershenko Trophy in S42 to honour the career of VHL Hall of Famer Alexander Chershenko. Though trophyless in a respectable VHLM career, Chershenko is one of two three-time winners of this award in the VHL. In addition to this, Chershenko was honoured for his contributions to enhancing the VHLM experience while VHL commissioner." - VHLM Awards Page

Season 93 featured a number of potent offensive threats, with 15 players crossing the 30 goal threshold, however there were only 3 players who scored more than 40-- 2 of those players scored 50 or more.  This season's winner finished the season with 51 goals in 72 games and was an offensive catalyst for the Las Vegas Aces who put together a remarkable regular season on the back of this player's offensive contribution.

The Vladimir Boomchenko Trophy

Awarded to the player who leads the VHLM in assists at the end of the regular season

"This award was renamed from the Oates Trophy to the Vladimir Boomchenko Trophy in S42. Boomchenko won this award in S25 and mirrored the achievement in S29 in the VHL. A vocal member of the Riga Reign, Calgary Wranglers, and Cologne Express, Boomchenko also contributed, in a co-GM capacity or as a volunteer, to many VHLM teams and locker rooms, most notably the Yukon Rush and Saskatoon Wild." - VHLM Awards Page

With 12 players recording more than 50 assists in Season 93, this race was hotly contested all throughout the season with our eventual winner reaching the 60 assist plateau in 72 games.  As a part of the Prime Minister's Cup winning Ottawa Lynx, this defender was a regular contributor at even strength and on the power play, with 12 of their assists coming with the man advantage.  Not only an offensive threat, this player also exhibited remarkable defensive capability, making their offensive contribution all the more impactful.

The Ethan Osborne Trophy

Awarded to the player who leads the VHLM in points at the end of the regular season

"This award was renamed from the Dionne Trophy to the Ethan Osborne Trophy in S42 to honour the VHL Hall of Fame career of Ethan Osborne. VHLM MVP and top scorer in S30, he repeated the feat in the VHL in S36, in between founding and managing one of the VHLM's most successful franchises: the Bratislava Watchmen." - VHLM Awards Page

One of the most prestigious statistical awards, the Ethan Osborne Trophy is awarded to a player who records the highest point total in the VHLM-- no easy feat.  Throughout this season, this player led all forwards for long stretches before eventually taking a commanding lead in the points race and securing the award.  Playing for the Philadelphia Reapers, this player was the focal point of their offense from the drop of the puck in Season 93, constantly threatening opposing defenses with an ability to score and pass the puck.  Finishing 2nd in total goals and 2nd in total assists, he put together an incredible season that earned him the most total points and the honor of the Ethan Osborne Trophy.

Congratulations to the S93 Ethan Osborne Trophy winner @Adrest245 Walter Jinn!

The Benoit Devereux Trophy

Awarded to the player deemed to be the top goalie in the VHLM

"This award was renamed from the Sawchuk Trophy to the Benoit Devereux Trophy in S42 to honour the illustrious career of VHL Hall of Famer Benoit Devereux. The HC Davos Dynamo legend won this trophy in a spectacular S9 campaign with Toledo before becoming the first three-time top goalie in the VHL. He would have been a worthy name for that award if it wasn't for a younger generation to follow and so is at last honoured in this way." - VHLM Awards Page

Here are the nominees:

@Benson Herald Benson (HOU) - 47-21-4, .924SV%, 2.10 GAA, 6 SO

@Dil Hugo Boss (OTT) - 50-13-8, .916 SV%,1.88 GAA, 11 SO

@Tuchy Austin Goulet III (SSK) - 24-11-1, .908SV%, 1.93 GAA, 2 SO

@Frank Soju (PHI) - 30-30-12, .911 SV%. 2.64GAA, 5 SO

The highest honor reserved particularly for goalies, the Benoit Devereux trophy honors the goalie who contributed the most to their team throughout the regular season.  All four of the nominees were outstanding for their teams and deserve the honor of a mention.

Hugo Boss led the way with 11 shutouts and a league-low 1.88 GAA.  Herald Benson, however, notched a .924 SV% on a Bulls team that really leaned on his stellar play early in the season.  Austin Goulet III put together a solid all-round stat line for Saskatoon en route to a playoff berth and eventual Founder's Cup win.  And Soju was a brick wall for Philadelphia-- a team that might have lacked the depth of the other top teams-- still managing to put together a more than respectable .911 SV% with 5 shutouts.

The winner of this award, however, was instrumental to their team throughout the season-- through adversity and into a hot stretch run.  Arguably the most important goalie to his team's success, this season's winner played all 72 games for his team and remained among the league leaders in all statistical categories while facing 2018 total shots on goal (4th most in the league).

The Ryan Sullivan Trophy

Awarded to the player deemed to be the top defenseman in the VHLM

"This award was renamed from the Bourque Trophy to the Ryan Sullivan Trophy in S42. One of the greatest VHL defencemen of all-time, a three-time recipient of the Sterling Labatte Trophy, Sullivan proved his mettle in the VHLM in S28. In addition to an illustrious career, Sullivan's case was strengthened by his victorious role as Kolari Panthers GM and later becoming VHLM" - VHLM Award Page

Here are the nominees:

@DontCallMeCarson Magni Jinn (PHI) - 17 G, 34 A, 51 P, -11,54 PIM, 173 HIT, 160 SB

@Eagle Eye Pinn Jinn (PHI) - 21 G, 51 A, 72 P, -6,110 PIM, 209 HIT, 148 SB

@Connor Mclaughling Connor Mclaughlin (LVA) - 10 G, 42 A,52 P, -3, 128 PIM, 268 HIT, 131 SB

@Cartripp14 Carson Tripp (SSK) - 17 G, 59 P, 76 P,+26, 75 PIM, 134 HIT, 112 SB

Each of the nominees for the Ryan Sullivan Trophy put together impressive stat lines. Magni Jinn led the way with 160 shots blocked (ouch), really sacrificing their body for their Reaper's squad while also contributing 51 points.  Pinn Jinn was a hitting machine for Philadelphia with 209 hits and 110 penalty minutes, all while potting 21 goals and 51 assists for 72 points.  Connor Mclaughlin takes hitting to the next level with an astonishing 268 hits and 52 points for the Las Vegas Aces.  Carson Tripp was a mainstay on the Saskatoon blueline and notched an impressive 76 points while still being a defensive contributor with 112 blocked shots and 134 hits.

This season's Ryan Sullivan trophy winner displayed probably the best all-round game, leading his team in points while also laying his body on the line to keep the puck out of the net.  On a team loaded with top defenders, this player's performance is all the more remarkable as he took command of his team's blueline and finished 2nd in scoring by a defender.  Our winner was also the only nominee with a positive +/- rating, finishing the season at a +26!

Congratulations to the S93 Ryan Sullivan Trophy winner @Cartripp14 Carson Tripp!

The Mat Bentz Trophy

Awarded to the player deemed to be the best two-way forward in the VHLM

"This award was renamed from the Yzerman Trophy to the Matt Bentz Trophy in S42 to honour the VHLM contributions of Matt Bentz. Well-known for a Hall of Fame VHL career as a potent goal-scorer and long-time Calgary Wranglers GM, Bentz's path to the VHL pinnacle started with an Yzerman Trophy in S8. He repaid the VHLM in full by serving as VHLM commissioner and arguably pioneering the modern interpretation of the role" - VHLM Awards Page

Here are the nominees:

@MicahC Micah Cederbaum (SSK) - 24 G, 32 A,56 P, +18, 53 PIM, 178 HIT, 13 SB

@lilchrist Taylor Swift (MIS) - 40 G, 56 A, 96 P,+14, 35 PIM, 136 HIT, 31 SB

@do3bo1 Owen two (MEX) - 20 G, 29 A, 49 P, -16,56 PIM, 226 HIT, 53 SB

@FiZi Filip Zinek (HOU) - 36 G, 38 A, 74 P,+24, 58 PIM, 150 HIT, 29 SB

One of the more difficult awards to determine a winner for, though perhaps the most important indicator of a player's value to their team, the Mat Bentz Trophy honors a player whose personal on-ice accomplishments come second to team success.  That said, the winner of this award is no slouch on the offensive end, driving play forward for their team while also remaining defensively responsible.

This season's nominees features a group of players who were sometimes overlooked on their respective rosters as they may not have been the top scorers on their team, but were no less important because of their significance at both ends of the ice.  Micah Cederbaum played a depth center role for the Saskatoon Wild and was a rock solid option for his team up the middle all season long, recording 56 points, 178 hits, with 13 blocked shots.  We all know Taylor brings the hits (136), but Swift also scored an impressive 40 goals and 96 points to go along with 31 blocked shots.  Owen Two had the lowest point total of our nominees with 49 points, but was a physical force on the ice throwing 226 hits and blocking 53 shots.  Finally, Filip Zinek was old reliable for the Houston Bulls, returning for his second season in the VHLM.  Zinek put together a well balanced stat line of 74 points, 150 hits, and 29 shots blocked.

This season's winner played on his team's top two lines throughout the season and was offensively threatening every time he was on the ice, while also being responsible in his own end.  Finishing the season at +24, he had the highest +/- rating of all our nominees to go along with his other impressive statistical achievements.

Congratulations to the S93 Mat Bentz Trophy winner @FiZi Filip Zinek!

The Jack Reilly Trophy

Awarded to the general manager deemed to be the best in the VHLM

"This award was renamed from the Ken Holland Trophy to the Jack Reilly Trophy in S42 to honour the VHLM managing career of later HC Davos Dynamo GM Jack Reilly. Reilly was GM of the Saskatoon Wild for 11 seasons from S18 to S28, winning three Founder's Cups and a record four Top GM awards" - VHLM Awards Page

Here are the nominees:

@AJW Houston Bulls - 47-21-4 - 98 points

@Dadam30 Saskatoon Wild - 47-21-4 - 98 points (Founder's Cup)

@Grape Ottawa Lynx - 50-13-9 - 109 points (Prime Minister's Cup)

@McLovin Las Vegas Aces - 40-26-6 - 86 points

This award honors the general manager who not only builds a successful team, but is involved in managing players,  improving their team throughout the season, helping players develop in the VHLM, and leading their team off the ice.

The nominees this season feature both AJW and McLovin who were last season's joint winners. AJW once again willed his Bulls team into playoff contention after a challenging start to the season and is known for building a great locker room environment in Houston.  McLovin, similarily, seemed to get the most out of his Aces squad this season as they qualified for the playoffs with 86 points. Dadam30 led the Saskatoon Wild to a Founder's Cup title as a rookie general manager, proving that he has everything it takes to build and lead a championship team in his first season.  Finally, Grape did an exceptional job drafting and building a team that would go on to dominate the regular season, finishing 1st in the league and clinching the Prime Minister's Cup.

While all the candidates are deserving of the nomination, only one nominee captured the hearts of the voters, earning the award to cap off an incredible season.

The Mitch Higgins Trophy

Awarded to the player deemed the VHLM's most valuable player during the regular season

"This award was renamed from the Sakic Trophy to the Mitch Higgins Trophy in S42. Higgins won the award as part of a legendary Ottawa Ice Dogs team in S23 before leading a notable VHL career and securing at various points the positions of Oslo Storm GM, VHLM commissioner, Helsinki Titans GM, and VHL commissioner" - VHLM Awards Page

Here are the nominees:

@Benson Herald Benson (HOU) - 47-21-4, .924SV%, 2.10 GAA, 6 SO

@Dil Hugo Boss (OTT) - 50-13-8, .916 SV%,1.88 GAA, 11 SO

@dogwoodmaple Maple Dogwood (HFX) - 35 G, 50 A, 85P, +31, 56 PIM, 141 HIT, 14 SB

@Adrest245 Walter Jinn (PHI) - 50 G, 59 A, 109 P,+22, 42 PIM, 120 HIT, 144 SB

@samx Pombo (LVA) - 51 G, 51 A, 102 P, +34,26 PIM, 86 HIT, 29 SB

Finally, to cap off our evening, we have the presentation of the most prestigious individual award in the VHLM-- the Mitch Higgins Trophy to honor the VHLM's MVP.

This season's winner was dominant all season long and finished the season with 48 points more than the next highest scorer on his team at the conclusion of the season.  With 50 goals, he was a constant scoring threat, but with 59 assists he also consistently set up his teammates. He led the league in points with 109 and shots with 462, while pitching in defensively with 44 shots blocked and 120 hits.  He also completed the 72 game season with a +22 rating.

While the other nominees on our list had exceptional seasons in their own right-- some even winning hardware earlier tonight-- the S93 Mitch Higgins Trophy winner was in a class of his own and made the decision relatively easy for the voters this time around.

With that, we are at the end of our awards presentation for Season 93.  Congratulations to all the winners and nominees on outstanding seasons and best of luck to everyone as Season 94 is right around the corner.  With games starting on Wednesday, training camps are in full gear and players are ramping up their practices in anticipation for the start of a new campaign.  I hope everyone enjoyed the awards this evening and I hope I didn't forget anything-- or more importantly-- anyone!

If I did, feel free to yell at me later.

Have a wonderful evening, everyone!
