After the 72 regular season games, there were three teams, namely Chicago, Vancouver and New York in the NA conference with the exact same point total of 88. Chicago got a bye while the Wolves and the Americans have to duke it out, in order to prolong the season. The first two games of the Wildcard series have been played and the Empire State franchise leads with 2-0. Here are the games in detail.

3-2

In the first encounter the Americans won by one goal in a 3-2 contast against the team from British Columbia. The first period was a lot of trying from both sides but only Martin found the back of the net for the Wolves. In the second frame Dodo equalized the score with a power play marker. Early in the third, Janser brought his colours in front with a converted powerplay. The Swiss defender was succesful after a textbook relay. First Gretzky won the draw in the enemy zone and passes the disc to Janser, the alternate captain to Jeannot, the forward back to CGY. The Calgary Giant to his partner in crime Yvel, back to Janser. The defender takes a pot shot but misses. Trunov is first on the loose puck and saucer passes it back to the blue liner, who this time does not miss and goes top shelf. Shortly after, Davis scores on even strength. With only five minutes left on the clock Martin with his second of the night cuts the Americans' lead in half, but it was too little, too late and the New Yorkers skate out with a victory. Martin (2g/0a), Yvel (0g/2a) and Davis (1g/1a) were named the three best players. The epic battle between the pipes was won by 36W (.935) against a very solid Vidarsson (.921). New York's power play was above average (2/7), while the penalty killing unit closed the shop (5/5).

CGY was noted with 1g, 0a, -1, 2 PIM (Hooking, obviously no effect on the score), and a very rare 0 hits, 0sb.

5-2

In the second joust in the series, the Americans did not want to make it that thrilling for the crowd and beat the Canadians clearly with 5-2. Midway through the first, Davis scores on the man advantage for the New York outfit. Fast forward to the second period, Trunov and Davis with an even strength marker each increased the lead, before Lazaro twenty-four seconds short of the horn, gives Vancouver some hope. Janser than re-instated the three goal lead with a power play goal shortly after the half-way mark. Gretzky wins the face-off against Ninefingers and dishes the puck to CGY, who one-times it just above Vidarsson's blocker. Calaway grants his team some kind of second wind with less than five minutes left to play. However, Gretzky with his first ever VHL playoff goal, takes it away two minutes later. The three stars were awarded to Janser (1g/2a), Trunov (1g/1a) and Davis (2g/0a). Once more, Vancouver's Greenland netminder (.881) had to acknowledge 36W's (.929) dominance in net. New York's power play was sub par (2/10), while their box play units remain immaculate (3/3).

CGY left the ice with 1g, 2a, +2, 2 PIM (Boarding, no consequences on the score board), 4 hits, 3sb and the first star distinction.
