Have any of you played one of the Paradox strategy games (Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings...)? I just started my very first game in Crusader Kings II after getting it in a Humble Bundle a few weeks back, pretty hardcore stuff and not that easy to get into but it seems like you could have a lot of fun once you get the hang of it!

Tell me what's going on with The Division and why it looks so toned down compared to the first video we saw at E3 like 2 years ago.

Alright, so we played through a part of The Division that I believe was shown at E3. Where various squads met up in this square, and one of them went rogue and started killing everyone else. I thought the idea was that if you went rogue, you would fend off the other squads, extract, and then leave the area. In this demo at least, it basically turned into a weird three team deathmatch sort of thing. I'm hoping the full game will be more like what I expected, and this was just tuned to get us playing against each other in a demo. The game is presented as a third person shooter, but it is very much an RPG in the way damage is dealt (and I imagine how characters/classes will be structured). Control-wise I thought it worked pretty well, but I was having some troubles with the cover system. I prefer contextual cover, tapping a button to get in and out just feels kind of archaic.

The game looked alright, definitely not as much as a drop off as we saw with say... Watch Dogs. A few frame drops here and there but it held steady and looked completely acceptable to me. The reasoning is likely due to Ubisoft just showing that game way too early, which is a bad habit they've gotten into. It doesn't look bad by any means, it just looks more like what you would expect a game with its' scale to look like.

Oh, and the shotgun had absolutely awful range. Either it's desperately in need of upgrades found throughout the world, or it needs to be buffed big time.

I just remember seeing The Division for the first time before, and it looking phenomenal. What they have now isn't near that. It still looks decent, but at this point I'll probably wait for reviews.

I cannot wait for MGS: The Phantom Pain on Tuesday.

How's Dark Souls 3 and Just Cause 3?

Rock Band 4: worth the price? I had 1, 2 and Lego (never got three because the keyboard bundle never came to Canada on PS3) and enjoyed the party aspect of it. However my controllers are old and pretty worn down (all from RB1) so I would need the full bundle which is bordering $200 if I recall correctly.

Waiting for reviews is never a bad strategy. I'm excited as hell for The Phantom Pain as well.

Dark Souls III was interesting. The Souls game as a whole are very obtuse in their storytelling, and you have to go out of your way to learn what you need to do. I enjoy this, but I prefer the more linear/directed experiences of Demon's Souls or Bloodborne. The Dark Souls games feel a little overwhelming to me. While the influence of Bloodborne could be felt right away (slightly tweaked controls, faster movement) it very much returns to that feeling of a bigger, sprawling open world.

Just Cause 3 is... weird for me. I really, really want to like it. It's stunning visually, and the destruction is crazy awesome. But I cannot seem to get a hang of the movement system. The demo they brought was very limited however, so I don't think it didn't a great job of selling me on the game. I did watch a few people who had a good handle on the controls, and it looked awesome. If you enjoyed Just Cause 2, this looks like it's going to be a bigger, crazier, more explosive follow-up to that.

I'm in the same boat as you with having to buy a new bundle. My guitars have all stopped working and my drum set is literally held together with duct tape. We chatted with one of the devs from Harmonix (I feel bad because I forgot her name, but I think I've got her card around here somewhere) and talked about what's been changed. With the controllers themselves, there's a pretty good amount that's new. The guitars now use a digital system to activate Overdrive instead of analog, so it's much more responsive. The drum kid is a lot quieter and has more bounce to it, which I really enjoyed.

What they also said is that this is meant to be the ultimate Rock Band of sorts, they aren't going to be releasing new Rock Bands every year like Guitar Hero was when the sunk the genre. They've got a good quality set of instruments, the game itself, and Rock Band 4 is going to be the platform for all things Rock Band going forward in the foreseeable future. So new songs will be added as DLC, features will be tweaked and added in through patches, etc.

It's fun. It plays well. We're going to have a video of us all playing The Joker by Steve Miller Band going up soon. If you've got a bunch of friends that will all come over to play, I think it'll absolutely be worth it.

Open beta?

Details haven't been announced, just that it's coming out in early October. I imagine it'll be open to everyone if they haven't announced the specifics yet, or at the very least a very easy sign up to get in.

Definitely interested in that! I've been iffy on Battlefront (definitely waiting to see reviews) but getting beta access should help the decision out. Plus more people to test for them never hurts.
