DollarAndADream 3,356
D - Don Draper - 3rd Overall ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ Not only did the S38 VHL Entry Draft introduce Vojczek Svoboda to the VHL, but it also brought forward another extremely skilled defenseman. Coming into the VHL, Draper was one of the most prominent offensively gifted defenders in the VHLM. In Season 38, he earned 134 points, with 50 goals, only beaten out by David Januzaj as most goals as a defender that season in the minors. Draper entered the VHL in S39 and the hype surrounded him to quite a large extent. On that rebuilding Helsinki Titans squad, he came in a scored 23 goals and 29 assists for 52 points in his rookie season. He also had 156 blocked shots, but wasn't the most physical guy with only 33 hits. He followed up that with 73 and 72 point seasons in S40 and 41, but his best season so far was in S43. In that season, he managed to surpass that point-per-game pace, and earn 83 points with 18 goals. He also managed 121 hits, which shows how far his game has come since stepping into the pros. In S42, Don Draper and the Helsinki Titans were one of the favourites to win the Continental Cup, but were wiped out in 7 games by the eventual cup winner, the Cologne Express. Thus far into his career, it remains to be seen what heights Draper could reach, but the Titans are a lesser team in S43, where they traded away to build for the future. It looks like Draper might not be able to reach the potential he is capable of, depending on how quickly Helsinki can become a contender again or if he gets traded as well. So far in S43, he has 19 points in 20 games. D - Dimothenis Vlasis - 4th Overall ---------------------------------- ---------------------------------- This defenseman was drafted 4th overall to the Cologne Express, and shined down in the minors with a strong Turku Outlaws squad. In S38, Vlasis killed the rest of the VHLM with 124 assists and 173 points, only 1 point behind his Turku teammate Dexter Morgan for best in the league. Although his team did not go on to win the Founder's Cup, they did impress and Dimothenis found himself flying into the VHL with momentum for his rookie season. As a rookie, he scored 19 goals with 51 assists for 70 points as a rookie defender in S39, beating out fellow rookie Don Draper, also featured in this article. In the next season, his production dropped off by a big margin, only earning 30 points in S40, having lesser numbers in almost all the other categories as well. It was a curious thing, as his activity levels in the practice facilities had dropped off, and was reportedly less committed to the work ethic he previously had showed. He was then traded to the New York Americans for S41, where his play rose once again on the famous Americans squad. he obtained 65 points in the regular season, only 5 off of his career milestone. In the S42 playoffs he earned 10 points in 12 games and wound up winning the Continental Cup with New York. After that, he brought over to his third team, the Riga Reign where he remains today while they go through a rebuild. G - Brock Waldron - 6th Overall ---------------------------------- ---------------------------------- Brock Waldron was the best goalie out of this draft, and was the best goalie of S38 in his final season of the VHL Minors. In S38, he won the Esposito and Sawchuk trophies as Playoff MVP and Goaltender of the Year as he won the Founder's Cup with the Yukon Rush. In his rookie season with the Quebec City Meute, he managed a .914 save percentage in a rebuild with a losing team. That rebuild happened quickly though, and Waldron only had to wait through one mediocre season before being competitive. In S40, he had a .919SV% and 1.83GAA. The playoffs were an interesting one for sure, where Waldron's Quebec team held a 3-1 series lead but eventually lost in 7 games to the Calgary Wranglers. Then, the Meute strengthened their squad for another push in S41, where Brock was great again. They faced Calgary once again, and beat them in 5, but they were taken out in 5 games by the New York Americans who were the eventual champions. On to S43 Waldron went, where he once again was a dominant goaltender in the league, and won the Victory Cup with the Meute. This time around, Quebec City beat their nemesis New York Americans in 7 games, but lost in the VHL Finals to the Cologne Express. S42 is the furthest Waldron has been to a cup in the VHL, but he is a multiple time VHL All-Star and one of the better goaltenders in the VHL over the past few seasons. His Quebec City Meute squad are pushing once again this season for another try at victory. eaglesfan036 1 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/19968-claimeda-brief-look-back-into-the-s38-vhl-entry-draft-part-two-final-66/ Share on other sites
Admin Victor 10,940 Posted May 10, 2015 Admin Share Posted May 10, 2015 Vlasis a major disappointment after his rookie season, but I don't think the member has a single player over 400 TPE and he's been on and off since S1. Sixersfan594 247
Content: 3/3 - I really like the series, keep it up, maybe a re-draft in the end Grammar: 2/2 - Overall very good, could of used a few tweaks here and there, but solid. beaten out by David Januzaj as most goals as a defender - beaten out by David Januzaj for most goals by a defender best goalie out of this draft -- could be best goalie from this draft? Just sounds weird. (Not deducting). Appearance: 1/1 - Yup Overall: 6/6 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/19968-claimeda-brief-look-back-into-the-s38-vhl-entry-draft-part-two-final-66/#findComment-216925 Share on other sites

Just a terribly shallow draft after the Top-3, everyone was already aware of that at the time which made missing out on Draper so much tougher for us Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/19968-claimeda-brief-look-back-into-the-s38-vhl-entry-draft-part-two-final-66/#findComment-216958 Share on other sites

Kesler 1,514
I remember when teams were trying to trade up to draft one of the big three, but Waldron was definitely a great pick for where he went. Senior Admin Will 4,660 Posted May 11, 2015 Senior Admin Share Posted May 11, 2015 Draper will just quietly fade into even greater irrelevancy. Poor guy, hasn't accomplished much of what was hoped up to this point. I don't like to think about this draft too much though. Screw you, Slobo. Yeah but he was a goalie, a position that many of the teams, including Helsinki and us, didn't need at that time Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/19968-claimeda-brief-look-back-into-the-s38-vhl-entry-draft-part-two-final-66/#findComment-217193 Share on other sites
