Draper

“The rise was meteoric, in Season 16 he was just a very active new guy who seemed to have the whole league on MSN, by Season 17 he was one of about three good writing graders and the GM of Minot, by the start of Season 20 he had won two Continental Cups, built a VHLM championship-winning squad, was league MVP and named a VHL commissioner.” – Jardy Bunclewirth Hall of Fame Builder Article

Donald Draper’s ascension into VHL fame is strikingly similar to one of the league’s greats, Jardy Bunclewirth. Similar to Jardy, young Donald began his career severely underrated, as I remember taking him with the 10th overall pick of the VHLM draft and everyone being like, “who?” Honestly, I just needed a defenseman at the time and had no idea Draper would turn into his magnificent self.

“From his first few weeks in Calgary (and their VHLM affiliate in Minot), it was quite clear Jardy was much more involved than the vast majority of fellow new members and inspired enthusiasm for his teams.”

Starting from day 1 with Yukon, it became quite clear that Draper was not your ordinary first-gen. I remember in our first conversation Draper was already concerned with being a tpe whore, trying to find every way possible upgrade his player. He was also very active around the boards, spamming the locker room and harassing Higgins. He was soon hired as a grader, and after something like a season of excelling at his job advanced to head grader.

Draper's first post in the Yukon LR - already on his way to becoming Jardy

After 2 seasons of kicking ass with Yukon and winning 2 cups, Draper became the GM of the Oslo Storm. Draper was by far one of the best VHLM GMs activity wise, as his locker room posts rivaled those of the historic Yukon 2 Gud era. Unfortunately, Draper’s Storm never quite won the cup, though he did still show a sound strategical nose.

Young Donald’s next big step up the ladder was leaving Oslo to become the Helsinki Titans GM. Draper inherited a team in the middle of cup contention, but after a few seasons made a controversial decision to blow everything up and rebuild. Looking at his haul now, it sure seems like he made the right decision as his team has an excellent core consisting of high draft picks such as Phil Hamilton, Greg Clegane, and Marcel Faux. Draper’s current player, Aleksi Koponen, is a strong rookie of the year candidate coming off of his MVP VHLM season.

Also similar to Jardy, Draper became a league commissioner before the end of his first player’s tenure. A rise from VHL nooby to commissioner within a year is extremely rare, as I think Draper and Jardy are the only ones to do so (outside of the league’s initial creation obviously). His consistently high activity, pleasantness to be around, and success in GM and head grader positions made him an excellent candidate for the position. He has succeeded so far, even outlasting the notoriously evil Jimothy Gow, giving dRiggins almost complete control over blue team. I’ve probably missed an accomplishment of his too.

The Young Shaw is also an outstanding gentleman to chat with. While he may ignore some of you peasants during his state of drunkenness (which is at least 50% of time), he is a great chat when he responds. We’ve gotten to know each other pretty well over the year and a half or whatever it’s been, as he even told me his favorite color the other day! (hint, it’s greater than 5 but less than 4). Thanks for being my friend and helping out this great league bud :3

Comment 3/3 - Rather than compare Draper to Jardy here, we need to appreciate that Draper is his own man, dammit! Nice ego stroking/butt kissing, I see what you're up to here!

Grammar 2/2 - Looks good!

Appearance 1/1 - I like the chart.

Final 6/6

I seem to recall a quote of mine from back when Draper was still very fresh. I was boasting about my past accomplishments, and said something along the lines of, "I had joined the league in late March and was Commissioner by the end of the year. That would be like if someone like Draper became Commissioner in 'X' months from now." And then he pretty much did.

Found it, it was in this podcast: http://www.vhlforum.com/index.php?/topic/7158-jardys-fucking-nostalgia-podcast/

It's around the 54 minute mark, though that upload is dead.

"...and I really like you, Draper, and I really like that you're showing a lot of interest in the league and you're going to be wonderful one day. Maybe in a few months YOU will be fuckin'...oh, when did...I bet Draper joined in March as well...'member since March 8.' If there's a new Jardy, it'll be Draper. He will be Commissioner in December. Book it."  - JardyB10, circa April 13, 2015.
