The Season 48 was one of the better drafts in recent memory due to the amount of players available. There were 25 draftees and surprisingly no GM passed as they all went within the first 25 picks. With that interesting tidbit I'm sure you all must wonder how are they doing now? Well without further adieu, we will find out!

1st Overall: Toronto Legion select Defenseman Black Velvet

Morgan+Rielly+2012+NHL+Entry+Draft+Portr

Black Velvet was the best player available and the Toronto Legion needed defenseman so this was a easy pick for Toronto GM Max Molholt. He bypassed another year in the VHLM and found himself in the VHL right away. He was not immediately thrown onto the 1st pairing nor the 1st PP line because the Legion had already drafted World B. Free earlier and had just traded for Francis York Morgan, so he had time to adjust to the VHL. So far this year, Black Velvet has scored 16 goals and assisted on 39 for 55 points in 66 games. Pretty good stuff for a rookie defenseman. If Velvet keeps improving on his 361 TPE, he will definitely be worth the 1st Overall pick.

2nd Overall: Quebec City Meute select Center Unassisted

Unassisted followed behind Black Velvet as the 2nd overall pick. He was the 2nd best player arguably in this draft and that's exactly wear he went. Imagine that. Just like Velvet, Unassisted bypassed the VHLM in Season 48 and immediately made the Meute out of Training Camp. With John Sleeman being drafted the year before and Unassisted this year, plus the GM bringing in Tom Lincoln via the GM Rule, the Meute have a nice young core to build around. So far this year, Unassisted has scored 33 goals and assisted on 37 for a total of 70 points. The future looks bright if Unassisted continues to grow with this young core.

3rd Overall: HC Davos Dynamo select Goaltender Jakub Holik

Quick-Jonathan.jpg

To round out the top 3 is goaltender Jakub Holik. Holik comes from the very respected "Beketov" agency who has a knack for bringing in some of the best goalies in the VHL has ever seen. Holik has joined a team in transition after a long stretch of being a team that either made the playoffs ro a team that could win the Continental Cup. However, this year they are neither one of those teams as they are last place in the European Conference. In 38 games this year, Holik has gone 6-30-1 with a .901 save percentage and a 3.29 G.A.A. Not the best but Holik can only do so much. He does however have a very good player/teammate in Sir William Covington III who is having a pretty good rookie season himself. With these two building blocks we should see Davos back to winning sooner rather than later.

4th Overall: Cologne Express select Center Tyson Kohler

Tyson Kohler is another player who comes from a very respected agency. It is the first time in over 10 seasons that a player from the "Kendrick" agency suited up for the Express. I'm sure the Express are very excited to welcome him back just as much as Kendrick is. I mean he is the man who brought the franchise to the German city. Much like first 3 picks, Kohler has jumped directly to the VHL. In 67 games, Tyson has scored 27 goals and assisted on 24 for 51 points. The Express are playoff bound so maybe we can see Kohler really break out because the last Kendrick player to play a playoff game for the Express had a knack for coming up big in playoff games.

5th Overall: Seattle Bears select Right Wing Bogdan Podarok

Bogdan was a bit of a surprise at 5th overall considering two players after him had more TPE. Everyone but Seattle who got the man they wanted. He has been great this year despite not cracking the VHL like others ahead of him in the draft, but Seattle knew that he would take a little extra time to develop. In the VHLM this year with Bratislava Watchmen, Bogdan has scored 59 goals and assisted on 57 for a grand total of 116 points in just 68 games. He looks to help Bratislava repeat as champions this year and he will be a big part of the Seattle offence next year joining Niels Skovgaard and Shawn Muller.

6th Overall: Quebec City Meute select Goaltender Dmitri Dadonov

With their 2nd 1st round pick in this draft the Meute drafted a replacement goaltender for former franchise goalie Ariel Weinstein. Dadonov followed suit with Podarok and is in the VHLM developing. QC management though it would be better for him to play with surprising Oslo Storm this year rather than be on the 2nd last place QC Meute. In the minors Dadonov has put on a clinic going 46-16-6 with a 0.912 save percentage and a 2.00 G.A.A and 8 shutouts. Dadonov just adds to the young stable of player QC has been building. They have 2 forwards, 1 defenseman and a great young goalie. Future looks very bright in Quebec.

7th Overall: HC Davos Dynamo select LW Pavel Komorov

Pavel Komarov was drafted by the Dynamo and later his agent, was appointed the new GM for the Dynamo so this was a pretty good selection by Davos. Komarov is playing with Oslo Storm and he is having a so so year scoring just 18 goals and assisting on 38 for 56 points. Not the greatest but not the worst. He is stuck behind some pretty great forwards on the depth chart in Pavel Varushkin, Dope Fiend, Sebastien Laine and Josh Merica behind him pushing for playing time. With the Dynamo having 3 GM's in 3 seasons, we hope Komarov and his player agent do well in Switzerland.

8th Overall: Helsinki Titans select LW Kendrick Cole

2012+NHL+Entry+Draft+Round+One+-QcGy0kgt

Kendrick Cole fell to the Titans despite having almost 200 TPE. I'm sure GM William Shaw was just ecstatic to select the young Cole. He started the year off with the Titans but the Titans were over the cap by 1.5 million so down Cole went to the Ottawa Lynx. During his short Titan stint Cole scored 2 goals and assisted on 8 for a total of 10 points. Now in the VHLM, Cole has been great scoring 30 goals and assisting on 29 for 58 points in just 45 games. Hopefully next year, Cole will be on the Titans roster as they will try to make room for him.

9th Overall: Stockholm Vikings select Defenseman Nikki Kassanen

Ryan+Ellis+2009+NHL+Draft+Portraits+AS77

Nikki Kassanen has been kind of a disappointment since being a 1st round selection in last seasons draft. He is back in the VHLM with the Saskatoon Wild. This season he has put up 17 goals and 48 assists for 65 points but he has not been to practice in a long time and the Stockholm management should be worried. He still has a couple more seasons to see if he will be classified as a bust or not.

10th Overall: Toronto Legion select Defenseman Cian Mercer

stuartpercy.jpeg.size.xxlarge.promo.jpeg

Cian Mercer is another 1st round draft pick who might come out as a bust. He was drafted with the hopes he can develop into a top 4 defenseman at the VHL level but has yet to practice since being drafted. Despite this, he is leading the Ottawa Lynx in scoring with 65 points (6 goals and 59 assists). If Mercer can figure out what he wants to be in the VHL he could be a steal at 10th overall and help the Legion become that much more of a powerhouse.

Well guys, there we have it, a full run down of the 1st round of the Season 48 VHL Entry Draft. Hope you enjoyed.

Rodgriguez not mentioned? (as part of Quebec future lol)

Awesome review! glad to see you back doing PTs again. solid in depth breakdown of the S48 draft! i had just a couple nitpicks about this article. It seems like you cover everyone, but i think more about everyone would've been nice. I think this could've been a series, which would have also gotten you more TPE! Also, Tyson Kohler definitely doesn't have enough hair in that picture. Anyways, good work, i really enjoyed reading this! hopefully i can rise in the power rankings as the seasons go on.
