Claimed: Q&A With Quebec GM ahead of S56 Off-Season

Recommended Posts

VHL radio presents and interview with Quebec general manager Frank Chadwick.

Q: After last seasons disappointing loss to the Helsinki Titans in the finals what do you think your teams main weakness was and how did you address that heading into theses playoffs?

A: That's a great question, I think when you lose in a best of seven series against the team you lost to in the finals the year previous it makes you examine how you were building your team. The past two to three seasons we've built our team on young up and coming talent and depth with a franchise goalie. This season my focus was to up the star power and maybe cut away at the depth a bit. I also noticed we didn't quite have the offence to match up against other top teams. With all that in mind we went out and tried to acquire more offensive fire power, which led us to signing free agent Petro Maximoff and then acquiring Abbott a head of the deadline.

Q: What impact have the additions of Maximoff @Green and Abbott @Bushito had?

A: More then we could have asked for. Maximoff was coming into his final season so we weren't sure how depreciation would affect him. But he continued to show up for practice and was our second leading scorer. Abbott was an upgrade on Petenis as Petenis had slowed down in practice. Abbott makes us a quicker team and also gives us that play making element we didn't have with Petenis.

Q: Speaking of leading scorers what did you think of Lukas Muller's season and have you began contract negotiations?

A: Some were surprised when Muller out scored Cornerstone but I'm not. When we scouted Muller ahead of the Season 53 draft we thought he made his line mates better where as Cornerstone was more of a do it yourself player. I think we're now seeing that decision of trading down paying off as we were able to acquire both Muller and Locke.  Right now we have a big three of Muller @solas Jokinen @jRuutu and Skye @Velevra. In my opinion they're all faces of the franchise and we'd like to keep Muller until he retires. That will be up to the Solas agency though, we've had very productive dialogue thus far. I expect we should be able to get a long term deal done this off season.

Q: Last question what are your plans heading into the draft, we realize it's early but we'd love to hear your thoughts? Any chance you move up?

A: We've got a lot of holes as far as our prospect pool goes, but I'd say we're focused on either a forward or goalie. We haven't discussed moving up that will likely happen in the off-season but I'd definitely say we're interested if the opportunity is there and it makes sense. I doubt we'll be able to move up into lottery position with this being a deep draft and all.

Q: We're going to sneak one more question in here before we go, which draftees have you scouted the most?

A: I'm not really comfortable revealing who we have scouted the most or divulge who we're trying to get. But I'll give you two names that have impressed us thus far. Keaton Louth @Beaviss and Shawn Brodeur @TheLastOlympian07. That's all I'm going to say.
