With the previous trade between Cologne and Seattle proving to be a win for Cologne in my humble opinion. Let's take a look at the Toronto Legion and New York Americans trade. This was Toronto gearing up for another playoff run with hopes of winning the Continental Cup for something like the third time in a row. Idk it doesn't sound that impressive right, just a 3peat.

To :tor:Toronto Legion:

D - Kerkko Hyvarinen

To :nya:New York Americans:

S52 :tor:Toronto 2nd Round Pick

Overview

The Toronto Legion were on the verge of a historic threepeat, the first and only of it's kind. The team just needed to retool in terms of adding depth to the team to compliment the big guns of the team. Defenseman are always at a premium in the VHL because it seems that most switch to forward later in their careers. Enter Hyvarinen who is the definition of depth. Coming from New York where he had a modest 14 points in 31 games. In Toronto, Kerkko put up 5 goals and 11 assists for 16 points in 40 games. He shored up a blueline and helped the Legion finish 1st in the N.A Conference. In the playoffs, the Legion would play the Meute who beat the Wranglers in the quarterfinals. In a 6 game series, the Legion proved to be too much. In the finals, it was the Legion on he verge of history as the Dynamo stood in the way. It went down to the wire before the Legion won in OT. Kerkko scored 1 goal and assisted on 4 goals for 5 points in 13 games. This trade seemed to work out right away as the Legion won he cup.

In Season 51, Kerkko was brought back as the team tried to go for a unprecedented 4peat. The team ended up finishing 2nd in the N.A Conference. Kerkko chipped in with 9 goals and 28 assists for 37 points. The Legion finishing 2nd had to play in the quarterfinals against the Seattle Bears in which they beat them in 6 games. The Wranglers who signed a bunch of high profile free agents waited in the semis and in surprising fashion, the Legion beat the in 5 games. The Legion were in the finals for the 4th straight year, winning the previous 3 finals. This time against the Riga Reign, the Legion would fall in 7 games. Ending their dreams of unmatched history (even though a threepeat already is seemingly impossible). Kerkko had 4 assists in 18 games.

The Pick on the other hand turned into a void pick after it was traded to the Helsinki Titans.

Verdict

Kerkko Hyvarinen put up 14 goals and assisted on 39 goals for 53 points in 132 games. Not the best but certainly not the worst for the depth defenseman. Kerkko played in 31 playoff games scoring once and assisting on 9 for 10 points. He has his name on the Continental Cup and that right there pretty well sealed this deal for the Legion.

I'll be interested to see how I fare in this timeline since I seem to remember making a lot of trades this season (although I think more were done in the preseason). I get the feeling based off of the criteria (the value of the pieces involved in the trade), that I'll wind up losing more than winning, but given that a lot of the pieces we acquired in these trades were good value at the time and most of what we received wound up being traded further down the line for pieces that would help NYA win the double in S52-53 (E.g. Think the ultimate story of what this trade got us was a piece in a deal which we received Tom Lincoln and David Hamilton), I don't regret any move I made that season.

Also as a side note, I seem to remember that this deal was actually a three-parter done over the course of the season. Think the full deal combined was:

To TOR:

S52 3rd

Kerkko

Reencarnacion

To NYA:

S52 TOR 1st

S52 TOR 2nd

Francis York Morgan
