It's no secret that Henrik Zoiderberg has always been a powerplay specialist. From his early days with the Mexico City Kings where he remains second-place all-time in Powerplay goals, Big Z made a name for himself finishing on passes from the likes of future stars Michael Gary Scott @Motzaburger and Aleksander Rodriguez @Jtv123

Let's see how this special teams success has translated at the VHL level.

In his first season across 50 games played, Zoiderberg shares the lead with Scott Greene @DoktorFunk on the entire Seattle bears with 7 goals on the powerplay, out of his 9 total goals to Green's 16. A massive 78% of all goals scored!  Despite being ranked sixth on the team for total goals and tenth for total points, something has allowed the Cretin from Sweden to be especially prolific when set up as the triggerman on the man advantage.

Team goal scoring leader and fellow LW Shane Mars @Spade18 for example has had only 14% of his goals come on the man advantage. Looking at basic stats, Zoiderberg and Mars have similar numbers in both Scoring (89 and 90 respectively) and Defense (both at 90). Mars actually sports a far lower passing ability, but is a masterful skater and puck handler.

The question is, while these stats may help boost five-on-five scoring, could they have the opposite effect and be detrimental in a five on four situation where skating ability is less valued than the ability to find lanes and complete passes? Mars clearly has no problem tallying up assists, having nearly as many apples as Zoids has Peppers, but something else is at work here behind the scoresheet.

Analytics is a mystery.

Until next time, this is Henrik Zoiderberg, saying @Banackock, give me powerplay minutes!
