Season 66 Mississauga Hounds… where are they now? [1/2]

Recommended Posts

In this series I will be taking a look at the inaugural team for the Mississauga Hounds and where they have ended up since that season.

Firstly Callum MacElroy, MacElroy was a fantastic player for the Hounds who during the season was the highest point scorer. Playing on the second line he found a lot of success with the puck and could pick out the smallest holes to slot it past the goalie. He was the first player to finish with 100+ points in the season. Also with his great defence and leadership on the ice not many teams would score while he was on the ice he ended with a +/- of 40. MacElroy left Canada straight after the loss to Ottawa in the playoffs and has never returned. After spending some time researching it appears that he is now the manager of a league 2 soccer club in England. We wish him the best of luck in his endeavours over there and we know that the VHL has lost a star player.

Next we have Dan Gles, the line mate of MacElroy this young centre was one of the key pieces of the original Hounds team. He played up and down the ice with 96 points and 55 shots blocked in the 72 regular season games. He then got drafted 18th overall and went to HC Davos. He had an average rookie season being nothing great but also not being a huge liability, scoring 18 points and finishing with a +/- of 3. It appears that he must have impressed enough to be selected in the expansion draft by D.C. Dragons. Unfortunately being on a low level team like the Dragons he didn’t have the teammates to really succeed even though he scored 50 points he had a +/- of -48. This has appeared to hurt him mentally as his performance of late is like he isn’t mentally there on the ice. He isn’t training as much as he used to and is not really continuously improving like some other of the Hounds. I wish my past teammate the best of luck and hope he comes back stronger than ever very soon.

Lastly for this week's edition we have Hulk Hogan. The huge defender was always seen as a force to be reckoned with. He had a great season for the Hounds, being a great leader on and off the ice he was always friendly and would back up his teammates 100%. It helped the team be more physical and play to the best of their ability to have someone so physical on the ice with them. Hogan laid down 181 hits during the season and spent 118 minutes in the penalty box. Even with all those minutes in the box he still would usually top the team for time on the ice, and rightfully so he was a fantastic player and GM Jerry Garcia leant on him as he was our top defenceman. Seattle saw the greatness in his play and selected Hogan at number 5 in the VHL draft. Since then he has had some good season with 43 points, 155 hits, 138 shots blocked and 220 penalty minutes in his rookie season, he then went to 68 points, 169 hits, 123 shots blocked and 125 penalty minutes in s68 where he helped Seattle win the Cup. You can see the improvement where he improved or kept his stats the same whilst spending 95 less minutes in the box. Hogan has shown that he was and still is the best defender from the S66 Hounds.

Thank you for reading part one and tune in next week where we look at part two.

I'm glad to see a member reflect on drafts prior to their own, especially if we as the reader can read about players' careers in some detail. Lots of players, vets or otherwise, get overlooked because there are only so many players we pay attention to beyond the first few stars. There are a few awkwardly worded sentences, e.g.

can probably be written with slightly different punctuation:

That way the pacing (at least in my head!) makes a little more sense. You could use a colon or period between the MacElroys. Otherwise, fantastic work.

Thank you, trying to rush out a media spot before the week ends and not reading through it probably wasn't the greatest idea. Thanks for your review.

No worries. You put out good work on a consistent basis, and everyone (no matter how good) makes small mistakes, editing or not. I enjoy reading your work regardless, just don't stop writing! :)
