Calgary back on top

After 8 games in the VHL’s S71, the Calgary Wranglers find themselves in a familiar place – on top on the league. All throughout last season, the Wranglers flirted with first place but ended the season third overall. Again, the media picked against Calgary having a superb season as they lost starting goalie JB Rift and steady defenseman Cody Smith in the off-season due to cap issues. GM @Bushito did keep the young and upcoming core together though, and it’s working out for the Wranglers.

 

Near the top of the league in offense and defense, the Wranglers are playing hard yet disciplined hockey as they are second in the VHL in hits but have also taken the third least penalty minutes. While the powerplay is suffering, their penalty kill has been close to perfect and leads the league at 93.94%. Ironically, they are shooting more than any other team, producing over 36 shots per game and yet they have blocked only 67 shots, second-least in the league.

 

They are being led by sophomore goalie, Jacques Lafontaine, who leads the league with six wins and is in the top five in most statistical categories. The offense is being led by none other than best bros, Sigard Gunnar and RJ Jubis with 10 points each. Gunnar is tied for second in the league with 50 shots and third with five goals. Second-year D-man, Edwin THE Encarnacion has more than filled the shoes of the departed Smith as he leads the team with seven assists and Calgary defensemen with nine points which is tied for third among VHL blueliners.

 

They may not be at the top for long as three teams are only a point behind, but Calgary will enjoy the view from the top for now.
