This week, I will be discussing my thoughts of the S73 VHLM trade deadline, analyzing every trade in the week leading up to the deadline, along with my own post-deadline power rankings for every team. Let’s start with the trades! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- San Diego acquires: S73 MIN 3rd Halifax acquires: S74 SDM 4th Patrik’s Pick: Honestly, this trade is a win for both teams. Halifax acquires a pick in next year’s draft while San Diego gets a 3rd in the upcoming draft. The winner of this trade will be who gets a better player. Winner: TBD --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ottawa acquires: S74 PHI 1st S73 PHI 3rd S73 PHI 1st Philadelphia acquires: D DeFenz Mann LW Big Chungus Patrik’s Pick: This was the big blockbuster trade. Philly ships off 2 years of their first-round picks for DeFenz Mann and Big Chungus. Philly is certainly pushing for a cup judging by this move. Ottawa was a fringe playoff contender with an above .500 record, but with this move and shipping out two of their star players, they may be tanking for the rest of the season. If Philly ends up winning the cup and it pushes those 1st round picks further back, this trade can go sideways for Ottawa really fast. Winner: Philadelphia --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Miami acquires: S74 SSK 6th S74 MIA 4th Halifax acquires: S73 MIA 6th S74 MIA 4th Patrik’s Pick: Both Halifax and Miami win here. All they do here is just swap years for those picks. The 6th rounders are there to sweeten the pot, but those 4th rounders may turn into roster players. Winner: Miami and Halifax --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Halifax acquires: S74 LVA 3rd Las Vegas acquires: S73 HFX 6th S73 HFX 4th S73 MIA 4th Patrik’s Pick: Both teams get what they want here. Halifax continues to build toward the S74 draft and Vegas, who is in a playoff position, acquires some later pick which could turn into roster players. Winner: TBD --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ottawa acquires: S73 PHI 4th S73 HOU 1st Philadelphia acquires: Adam Syreck Patrik’s Pick: Right now, this trade is great for Philadelphia. They acquire the league’s leading scorer who is making a case for this years MVP to an already loaded Philly lineup. Don’t worry Ottawa fans, it isn’t all bad because you acquire Houston’s 1st round pick. Houston is at the bottom of the league this year, so if that pick is a lottery pick, you could acquire a star young player like Laine or Schwarz. However, if that pick doesn’t win a lottery spot, this trade falls off for Ottawa. Winner: TBD --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Las Vegas acquires: S73 MEX 5th S73 MEX 4th San Diego acquires: D Joakim Lund Patrik’s Pick: San Diego is getting away with highway robbery right here. They get a solid shutdown defenseman in Lund who despite only having 8 assists in 54 games, is a +22. If those picks that Vegas acquired turn into nothing, I hand this trade right over to San Diego. Winner: San Diego --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Las Vegas acquires: S73 HFX 7th Halifax acquires: C Jack Mount Patrik’s Pick: There is a whole lot of nothing on both ends of this deal. Vegas gets rid of a depth piece in Mount for only a 7th, but he only had 9 points in 54 games with the team. Halifax gets another roster player, so I guess both teams get what they want here. Winner: Las Vegas and Halifax --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ottawa acquires: S73 MEX 3rd Philadelphia acquires: D Rich Dickbutt McFudderdudder Patrik’s Pick: Philadelphia is absolutely stealing this trade. They get a top-scoring and shutdown defenseman in McFudderdudder and they give up Mexico’s 3rd rounder so they retain their own picks. Ottawa needs a miracle on that 3rd round pick or this is a trade they will most certainly regret. Winner: Philadelphia --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Las Vegas acquires: RW Jesper Norberg Halifax acquires: S74 LVA 7th S74 LVA 6th S74 LVA 4th Patrik’s Pick: Both Las Vegas and Halifax get a good deal here. Halifax stockpiles more picks for S74’s draft, continuing to plan for the future and the S74 Draft. Las Vegas gets a nice depth piece with Norberg. He is questionable defensively but has a nice depth scoring touch. We won’t know the true winner of this trade until S74’s draft. Winner: TBD --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are my updated power rankings of each team for post-deadline day. These rankings are based on how each team looks on paper. 1st: Philadelphia 2nd: Minnesota 3rd: Saskatoon 4th: Las Vegas 5th: Mexico City 6th: Mississauga 7th: Miami 8th: Halifax 9th: Yukon 10th: Ottawa 11th: San Diego 12th: Houston Well, it was an exciting deadline day, with plenty of small trades and a couple of blockbusters leading up to 3 EST on June 15th. Teams building for the future stockpiled picks, while cup contending teams bolstered their lineups. We have a few frontrunners for the cup, but an underdog may just be lurking in plain sight.
