animal74 1,871
Seabass Perrin As part of the “Community” theme this week, I wanted to interview a teammate who, in reality, I don’t know very well as I’ve only been on the Phantoms for parts of two seasons. He has always been very encouraging in the locker room and has a great attitude (except when we’re losing!). In fact, he was the first person to congratulate me when I got my first point as a Phantom. He is an original Phantom since being drafted with the franchise’s third ever pick, 17th overall in the S68 draft and he is currently Prague’s all-time leader in penalty minutes and shot blocks - proof of his drive and commitment to give it his all on and off the ice. He was the winner of the inaugural Phantom of the Year Award last season as voted by his teammates. Also serving as the AGM for the Phantoms, he is a class act and a rising VHLer who everyone should get to know. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy... Seabass: The Interview A74: Hello, Seabass @Seabass, and thanks for taking the time to do this interview. I’m really looking forward to this. First of all, could you tell us a little about yourself? Who is Seabass Perrin, IRL? SP: Well in IRL I’m just your typical French-Canadian, blue collar worker who lives in Sudbury, Ontario. I’m a man who loves the outdoors and usually around this time a year you’ll most likely find me camping somewhere and fishing in my free time or in my yard tinkering around with something. I’m not one to be going out to clubs, was never really into it, I’d rather be drinking around a bonfire. I don’t have any kids but I tend to love dogs more than people. I only got the one right now and she’s my best friend and I bring her almost everywhere with me, we’re a dynamic duo. A74: That’s awesome! I love camping, too. I totally see you as a dog person as you seem to remain very loyal to your teammates even after they’ve been traded to another team. What’s your dog’s name and what breed? SP: My dog’s name is Chevy (girl dog) and she's a border collie. A74: Border collies are nice dogs. She sounds like a great companion. Now, as we’ve chatted about earlier on Discord, you and I have had similar journeys in the VHL, having created players in the early days (Me: Gunnar-Rune Rorvik, S5-12, You: Sebastien Perrin, S7-13) and coincidentally both playing for the now defunct Toledo Scorpions in the VHLM early on, playing in the S11 Continental Cup Finals against each other (your Dynamo beat my Bears) and then taking a lengthy break before being drawn back. What do you remember from your first time in the VHL and what brought you back years later? SP: When I first came in the VHL this place was a little different. Let’s just say our members here had a little more of a thick skin when it came to jokes and comments being tossed around on the forums. Also most of our talking took place on the forums back then, there was no Discord. The one thing I remember from those days are all the short bus references made at the expense of the NY Americans. I actually don’t even remember myself winning my Continental Cup against you as I was sadly inactive at the time. I came back because I had seen an ad somewhere for the league and I was generally surprised it even still existed after ten years and originally signed up out of curiosity. A74: Yes, it’s fantastic the league is going strong after 13 years! A great testament to what a solid community we have here. As for me, I had always wanted to come back but it was finding time. When my other STHS sim league folded, I needed a hockey fix and came back to the VHL. The Prague Phantoms have a wonderful locker room and that is largely in part to the culture you and AGM and GM @diamond_ace have nurtured. What do you enjoy most about being an AGM for Prague and do you see yourself wanting to be a GM one day? SP: I enjoy the interactions and the friendships that I have built with the players the most. I can see myself as a GM one day but I wouldn’t say that one day is now. I’ve got some work to do before I can say I’m ready for it, but for now I enjoy my role here as a AGM. A74: And you will be a great GM when that day comes. As someone who is always encouraging others and helping answer questions, who are some of the VHLers who have helped you along the way? Give a shout out to some of the other great members of our community! SP: Jerry Garcia @GustavMattias, he was the first guy to reach out to me and show me how shit is done over here in the VHL and was very helpful with answering all the questions I had when I first joined up. Erik Draven @Jbeezy76, was my captain when I first entered the big leagues. I had him as a teammate in the minors with the Yukon Rush and I think he had an influence in the Phantoms drafting me, WSJ (Wolf Stansson Jr) and Willie Dredge in the S68 draft. We still chat here and there to this day. Alex Pearson @Jayrad28, I didn't know him at all before our time in Prague, but we clicked right away and have been pretty tight throughout our time here and still are. Our players have even shared a cell, and been to the drunk tank on a few occasions together. He has definitely made this league a little more fun for me. A74: Haha, yeah, Jayrad is good people and all three are solid members of the VHL, for sure. As a whole, what do you enjoy most about the VHL community? SP: I like the humour and the foolin’ around in the community. It’s nice to be able to have some fun and not all be serious. But I enjoy the people the most, everyone is pretty friendly in here and I’m not scared to just strike up a conversation with just about anyone. A74: Talk about striking up conversations, you’ve always been a welcoming and encouraging voice in the Prague locker room. What’s your motto when dealing with people online or in general? SP: I try to be a tamer version of myself. I don’t really have a motto but I try to be nice and not to insult people since we’re all here to have fun and I wanna keep a positive vibe in the locker room. We’re a family here in Prague and I try to treat all you guys as I would my brother or sister. A74: Well, you do a good job of that. I know that you’ve definitely made me feel welcome on the Phantoms from the moment I arrived last season, so thank you! Now for some quick fire questions to get to know you a bit better: What is your favorite NHL team? SP: Montreal (Canadiens) in the East, (St. Louis) Blues in the West A74: Alright, I’m a diehard Canucks fan. Favorite band or artist? SP: I'm an old school metal guy, Judas Priest would probably be up there. A74: Classic. How about favorite breakfast cereal? SP: Not much of a cereal guy but I do enjoy Cinnamon Toast Crunch if that still exists. A74: I’m pretty sure it does. Easy one - favorite color: SP: Orange A74: What’s a country you want to visit? SP: I'd like to visit the Scandinavian countries one day. More specifically the Norwegian fjords. A74: My grandma was of Norwegian heritage so that’s on my bucket list, as well. Now, the shit gets real: Star Wars or Star Trek? SP: Star Wars, I was a lil Star Wars nerd when I was younger. Never really got into Star Trek even though I caught a few episodes of Next Gen and Voyager. A74: Nice! Now, what’s your favorite sport to play besides hockey? SP: I'm hugely into water sports. I'm a good swimmer and I love kayaking and shit. But my favourite would be a toss up between water polo and tennis/badminton. A74: Great stuff! We’re nearing the end of our conversation. Any last comments? SP: Yes, I want to thank you for the opportunity to have this interview and for your contributions to this team. You’ve become a real vocal leader on this team and you’re always keeping track of not only your own performances but that of your fellow teammates. Keep making this team a better place to be! A74: I appreciate that very much. All of the Phantoms from this season and last have made me feel like part of the #Phamily. I’m happy that I can contribute to the fun! This interview has been a blast. Thanks again for joining me. Good luck the rest of the season and hopefully we can make some noise in the playoffs!
