Ben Green Rookie Report LW Cologne Express Questions surround the freshly signed wing from the VHLM known as Ben Green. Among these questions, one is ringing throughout all of the VHL, why now? Last year at this time, Ben Green refused to sign with the team that drafted him, the Seattle Bears, despite reports that Green had no issues with the management or players in Seattle. One thing is for sure though, Ben Green has a high ceiling and a load of talent. Strengths Ben Green is set to be a great scorer at any level of hockey. When he emerged on the scene in Ottawa in season fifty five, Green lead the team in shooting percentage and in just 26 games racked up 21 points. Among these points were 10 goals. While he did slump in season fifty six when it comes to goals and shooting percentage, Green remained a valuable asset. When asked about his decline in production, Green went on to say he was just at a certain point in his career in which he didn’t know whether or not playing hockey professionally was for him. However this off-season has proven to jolt life back into Green’s game. He was seen playing pick up games and absolutely shredding the competition. His scoring is light years better, and he seems to have improved in his skating ability, which is sure to improve his positioning when attacking the net. Another strong-point for Green’s game is his passing. While still raw, his skills moving the puck are above average in terms of his current competition. While he will have to improve his passing skills as he moves up into the VHL, there is no doubt that he is fully capable of doing so. 11 of his 21 points in season 55 came off of assists and its clear that while Green is destined to be a great scorer, his passing will be a force to be reckoned with. Puck Handling is a tool used by great scorers throughout history to get a slightly better look at the net, giving them the edge over other scorers that may not have been as effective handling the puck. While Green had decent puck handling in the past, it appears as though he has spent a lot of time working and improving his puck handling. This along with his much improved skating and passing will only bolster the incredible scoring ability he possesses as time goes on. Weaknesses We mentioned questions earlier. One big one is Green’s ability to adapt in penalty kills. He is certainly not one to step in and win a clutch face-off, and in turn could result in opponents winning the face-off in a power play situation. The lack of skill in the face-off department is a bigger deal than most would immediately think because of situations like these. Green also seems to be more of a follower than a leader. When on the ice, former teammates have complained that Green is not only a follower, but likely is unable to lead when called on. If true, this is potentially a red flag when it comes to team chemistry, but doesn’t really effect the ice time Green can produce when playing his role. Among all of his flaws, Green’s defense is capable of hurting his team while he remains on the ice. Sure, in many cases Green can make up for his defensive mistakes with counter attacks and aggressiveness on the offensive end, but the fact of the matter is, Green just doesn’t transition defensively as well as he should. Overall, Green has potential to be a great player and teammate. He’s a great guy and a better scorer, however critics would like to see his defense and ability to lead improve as time goes on.

It's been great, I couldn't have asked for a better locker room to be a part of! Being able to play with familiar faces in Ottawa is only going to help me as I adjust to professional hockey. It's still been a tough adjustment though. I've yet to score a goal in my first couple of games but hey, I can feel it coming. My shot has been hitting the back of the net more in practice, and with Nuck in goal that's saying a lot! Winning is nice! Not many feelings that compare to coming into your first professional hockey game and walking out with the win! I was even able to contribute slightly on killing a couple of power plays by winning some clutch face-offs. All that aside, just being a part of the league is an honor. The VHL is the top hockey league in the world, and my first step into gaining access in that league is to have a successful season in the VHLM. I couldn't imagine a team that is a better fit for that first step than the Ottawa Lynx! So thank you Ottawa! Players, coaches, and fans alike. Lets finish this season strong and chase the championship!4

Ben Green has signed with the Ottawa Lynx! We were able to catch up with Ben recently after practice to ask some questions. How are you enjoying your first few days in Ottawa? “It’s been great. I was glad when I garnered a lot of interest from the Ottawa organization because I already have some friends from around the hockey community that were playing here. To be able to step into an organization mid season that is winning games already, and to be able to do it surrounded by familiar faces is just making this transition from amateur to pro go more smoothly. As for the city of Ottawa, I couldn’t be happier with a location to call my temporary home. I mean it’s the capital city of Canada, what more could a hockey player ask for?” Some would say that early on here you’re not showing to produce at the level expected of you, thoughts? “It’s early. I’ve only played in two games, and even though I’ve yet to score, I’ve played some pretty solid ice time. We are undefeated in the two games I’ve played in, and my plus minus sits at a cumulative 1. Even though I don’t have any goals or assists, I’ve proven I can step in and win a faceoff on a power play, and what people are even more surprised of, that I can hang in there with the big boys. Not only have I not gotten pushed around, so far in the league I’ve been able to push a few others around. This can only go to show that the experts that said I would struggle to stay upright were in fact wrong.” Sounds like you’ve been paying attention to the scouting reports. Feel like you have something to prove to the scouts? “Only to the VHL scouts. I want my name to go around the league in a positive manner. That can only help your draft stock. A lot of the scouts we have to deal with today are unfortunately just media guys trying to sound intelligent. Like they know the game of hockey inside and out. They want to sort of predict you to be a certain kind of player and then they pray you never break the mold they set for you, so that they seem more talented. Realistically a lot of those guys are great, but a lot of those guys aren’t. The ones that aren’t are the ones your agent typically tells you to try an ignore, even if they build up a ton of hype around you. Just focus on the game and ignore the rest. Wise words of my agent.” Ok last question, what is your career goal? “Ok, so I have two that hold equally important ranking in my mind. One being that obviously I’d like to win a championship in the VHL. That should be every potential VHL players goal. Forget all the individual accolades, give me a title. The second one that is equally important, I want to win a world cup title with the United States. That one is big for me. Not only do I have to make the team, but then we have to have a great outing. It would surely be a major highlight in my career if I could attribute to that.” Thank you Ben. "Thank you!"
