  1. We're in the last stretch of this 64th season, the Oslo Storm are 4th in the VHLM and are looking to be a lock for the fourth and last place for the playoffs. Kai, along with picks, was a part of, possibly, the biggest trade of the season with him going from Ottawa to Oslo with Puigdemont and Jones going the other. He had a disappointing season with Ottawa and was sitting far in the draft standings, scouts didn't seem to like his play, but all of that changed with the scenery change he got when he put on the red and black jerseys of the Storm. After getting only 4 points in 33 games in Ottawa, the Korean winger has found a way to get 17 points in 20 games with his new team that is nowhere near equal, talent-wise, to his old team.

On top of that, Matthew Kai was selected to be a part of Team Asia during this year's World Juniors tournament. Team Asia was seen as the worst team of the tournament and that is what they ended up being, but it didn't stop Kai from getting close to a point per game with them. He had a good tournament and you could say the same for the entire team who ended up going 2-6-0, but still looked very good in every game.

With all of this, Kai went from possible 4th or 5th round talent to a 2nd round talent who, with a big finish to the season, may surprise some people and end up being picked in the 1st round of the VHL draft.

  2. 1) The World Junior Championship is finally underway; who do you think wins it all and why?
Team Asia. Jk, we're already out. I'd say Canada, but, to be honest, World doesn't look half bad, they could surprise.

    2) With VHLM playoffs right around the corner, where do you see your team ending up when its all said and done?

    0-4 vs Vegas tbh.

    3) How do you feel about your own personal performance thus far? Do you need to step it up, or stay consistent with what you have?

Started out very very very awfully, getting 4 points in 30+ games with one of the best teams in the league, but since the trade to Oslo, I've finally started producing to my talent. Next year should be great for Kai.

    4) What team do you think will be the biggest surprise in the last portion of this season?

OSLO BABY! But seriously, Ottawa. They're third behind Vegas and Halifax, but I think they've got this. Playoffs are a different season. (Still love ya bbyyyyyys!)

    5) Where do you see yourself at this point next season? What do you hope to have accomplished by then?

Top 10 in league points, I don't think I'll be with Oslo anymore, but I think I'll be one of the big players in the VHLM by this time next season.

    6) What do you like most about the VHL? What keeps you around?

Boredom. I don't have anything to do, so I come here to take care of a player that I don't even see playing.

+ Ever since he got his first hockey stick, Kai has loved scoring goals. He has this scoring ability that every player players wishes they had. He can finish in any way possible, whether it's his great shot or he dekes around all players on the ice and puts the puck in the back of the net after making the goaltender look foolish. Kai has this ability to be at the right place, at the right time, everytime. It's almost like he attracts the puck towards his stick blade while using some kind of black magic. It's freaky.

+ He's a great leader. He spent his junior years wearing a "C" on his jersey. On and off the ice, players, staff or fans, Kai is just great with people and likes to interact with everyone and make sure everyone is as happy as they can be. He firmly believes that negativity brings a bad "aura" around the team and tries his best to keep his team in the clear.

+ He's an absolute workhorse. First one on the ice, last one off. First one in the gym, last one out. He loves this sport and wouldn't trade this opportunity for anything.

    - Kai has the body that coaches wish all of their players had...but he doesn't use it. He's tall, he's big and he's fast, but he avoids physical play at any cost. Kind of like Max Pacioretty from the NHL, he scores goals and has the body that everyone seeks in a hockey play, but is scared of any hit.

    - His defense is very lackluster. Early on in his life, he was a great two-way center, his favourite player was Pavel Datsyuk and he modeled his game after him, but the years passed, the goals came and that's all he focused on. To this day, this is still the point, we've seen some glimpses of great defensive play, but he doesn't try nearly has much in the defensive zone as he does in the offensive zone. He knows that this will need to change to make it as a great VHL player, but only time will tell.

Coming from the video game capital of the world (he was born in Seoul, but moved to Busan before even his first year on this planet), he loves to play. It's an addiction. His father loves video games and wanted Matthew to become an eSport athlete, but hockey was the path that his son chose. That doesn't stop him from playing everyday and every night he can. It can become a problem if his team can't contain it.

We believe that Kai has the talent to be drafted in the first round of the next VHL draft, but a few problems might make him slide in the second. We believe that he has a beautiful career ahead of him, he should be able to become one of the best goalscoring Asian players in the league's history. He needs to work on the few cons that we mentionned above if he wishes to make it into the Victory Hockey League Hall of Fame, but if he puts in the work like we know he can, he might surprise some people and make it in there. We see a little bit of Evgeny Namestnikov in him, but with more offensive skill.

  4. Hiya,

I'm the Oslo Storm's assistant general manager,

There's a sweet empty spot made for you here in Oslo. You'd play on the second pair unless you prove that you are more active than our current three d-men, only then your minutes would go up. We are in a rebuilding process, so we are not in contention, but with many assets in the next two drafts, we could be for years to come.

If you have any questions, you can ask me or the general manager, Eudaldkp, anything in a private message.

  5. During a quite disappoiting season for Matthew Kai, this week has proven to be a rollercoaster for the young South Korean forward. Matthew got two calls this week that have taken his career into a whole new direction that what he was expecting.

First call came from the Team Asia general manager for the World Junior Championship. Kai was selected and learned that he should be a big part of this team as they try to get away with the gold at this year's event. Kai has double nationality, he grew up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but was born in Seoul, he made the decision at a very young age to represent Korea at the international level and try and put korean hockey on the map.

Second one came from the general manager of the Oslo Storm when Kai learned that he had been dealt from Ottawa to Oslo along with 2 picks for Charles Puigdemont and Dallas Jones. As he feels it's a big amount of pressure put on his shoulders to replace Puigdemont and Jones in Oslo, he's excited for a fresh start and play a bigger part on a new team.
