Season 95 VHL Theme Week - Rookies Rookies. A term for players whom are in their first season in the league, in the VHL. And also a term I would say is the best time of a player's life. A player would always want to be a "Rookie" if you count the benefits that being a rookie comes with. Of course, there are a few disadvantages with being a rookie in the league, but simply being a Rookie can bring out the best of someone. What is it like to be a Rookie? A rookie is someone who is new to the league, so not much is known about the person, the player. Yes, there are scouts and they try to do their jobs, but a rookie is an unknown, for the most parts. And that's where the benefits of being a Rookie comes into play. The unknown is a spectacular thing. When it comes to Rookies, they pose a great threat to the league they enter. Untapped potential, courage beyond their age, fearlessness and the will to win, do their best and have fun. That's the advantage of being a Rookie. Not much could be said with the opposition, when you are faced with a rookie, you don't have a template or historical data to abuse and strategize. You get what you see and usually much less. The highlight reels that follow rookies are just the basic prime examples for players living their best lives by being the Rookie. As long as coaches and managers are smart and brave enough to give their Rookie free rein, lots of potential good could happen, or just a bunch of bad, but that's the risk of having a Rookie in the line up. Back to why being a Rookie is a player's best time of their life. As a rookie, everything is new to you and those around you. Nobody knows what you can or cannot do, and likewise, you don't know what you could or could not do as well. It might feel very disheartening and stressful when things don't go as planned and don't go as well as you may have hoped when you are a rookie, but that just might be the results of having too high of an expectation. As a rookie, you just need to relax, work hard, have fun, and play your game. Don't let coach say otherwise. Just go out there and do your thing, but keep it simple, stupid. The basics. No pressure, just play the game. Let the game come to you. Nobody knows you better than yourself, and you don't even know yourself either. Just go out there and play. The results? The Rookies who gets it, performs well, spectacular even. Just look at some Rookies towering the leader board at times. How about them Rookies who surprises the league and wins major individual awards in their rookie season? That is living the best life as a Rookie. The hard part is not being a Rookie, being the unknown is good. But when you are a known substance, that's when life gets tough. That's why we get the so called "Sophomore Slump"! We're on a two game losing streak, so that doesn't feel too good, but we're right there. In it for a real battle to the end of the season. We need to keep at it and play up tempo. You even fought your ex-teammate and friend Chris Reynolds Jr. What's gotten to your game this season? Mv: There are times when you need to pick up your team's energy level. I didn't beat up Chris so we're good. I'm not getting much done on the ice this season, so got to do it another way. Reporter: What's the cause of your struggles this season? Mv: There are many types of players in hockey. We all have a position to fill. A top goal scorer, the playmaker, the high energy guy, you name it. You've got to energize the team and crowd, and sometimes dropping the gloves does the trick. It's important for boosting moral and confidence. I've been getting in reps to improve my skating and puck skills. Reporter: What is your biggest priority heading into your sophomore season? Mv: There's a lot of new skill and competition added to the team over the off season, so it's going to be a much tougher season to find play time. I need to improve my overall game and be a leader on and off the ice. Reporter: What are your expectations going into Season 95? Mv: I look to have a much better overall season in all aspects of my game. Season 93 VHL Draft Class After One Season Review With the end of Season 94, let's have a quick look back at the progress of our Season 93 VHL draft class and observe where and how the top prospects are doing after their first season post VHL-draft. Today we have a look at the progress of the Season 93 Top Prospects drafted in the first round of S93 VHL Entry Draft. We start things off with our 1st Overall Selection, Antonia Bucatini @CowboyinAmerica, who had a fantastic rookie season with the HC Davos Dynamo, scoring 31 goals, 93 points in 72 games played. Antonia grew an outstanding 457 TPA from 396 TPE to 853 TPE. 2nd Overall Selection, Gianfranco Del Rocco @Victor, had a terrific season with the Seattle Bears. Netting 28 goals and 59 points in 72 regular season games, and added an additional 4 goals and 11 points in 12 post season games. Gianfranco grew an outstanding 410 TPA from 381 TPE to 791 TPE. The Big Three of the S93 Draft Class remains the Big Three, 3rd Overall Selection, Lucy Leitner @LucyXpher, follows the trend and had a fantastic season with the Riga Reign. Lucy posted 10 goals and 53 points in 72 games and added an additional 3 goals and 7 points in 12 post season games. As a player, Lucy grew a bit faster than Gianfranco, hoping to slowly catch up in power rating. Lucy improved her TPA by 422, from 269 TPE to 691 TPE. 4th Overall Pick, Annie Oaks @Noodle Enjoyer, started the S94 season slow before being traded from the Vancouver Wolves to the Riga Reign to play with Lucy Leitner. In 72 games, Annie finished with 20 goals and 50 assists (19 and 48 came with Riga in 59 games). Annie added a goal and 5 points in 12 playoff games. Annie Oaks grew from 260 TPE to 565 TPE, a strong growth of 305 TPA. 5th Overall UghSike @UghSike had a tough season with the Chicago Phoenix, notching 13 goals and 27 points in 72 games played and also added a goal in 7 post season games. UghSike is later traded to the HC Davos Dynamo after his rookie season with Chicago. UghSike grew from 250 TPE to 468 TPE over the season. 6th Overall Forum Content @frescoelmo had a good season with the HC Davos Dynamo, finishing the season with 21 goals and 54 points in 72 games. Forum Content delivered valuable content in Season 94, growing 316 TPA from 261 TPE to 577 TPE over the season. 7th Overall Selection, Jorgen Lovstrom @Pifferfish, did not play in the VHL in Season 94. Jorgen grew from 237 TPE to 535 TPE throughout the season. 8th Overall Selection, Ondrej Vencko @Mutti, also did not play in the VHL in Season 94. Ondrej grew from 225 TPE to 382 TPE over the season. 9th Overall Benjamin Abenduct @Schnee had a great season with the Moscow Menace in Season 94. Benjamin scored 5 goals and 34 points in 72 games and added 3 goals and 13 points in 21 post season games with Moscow. Benjamin also grew a comfortable 317 TPA over the season, from 252 TPE to 569 TPE. 10th Overall Selection, Nathan Ecker @Nathan_8, did not play in the VHL in Season 94. Nathan grew from 230 TPE to 504 TPE over the season. 11th Overall Chris Reynolds Jr @Crstats23 did not play in the VHL in Season 94. Chris grew from 233 TPE to 494 TPE over the season. 12th Overall Selection, Alksanteri Kaskiniemi-Kekkonen @Snussu, also did not play in the VHL in Season 94. Alksanteri grew from 223 TPE to 480 TPE over the season. 13th Overall Gul Dukat @MSouthworth had a fantastic season with the Toronto Legion. Gul notched 6 goals and 52 points in 72 games, and later added a goal and 9 points in another 15 post season games. Gul also experienced rapid growth in Season 94, growing 317 TPA from 247 TPE to 564 TPE during the season. 14th Overall Selection Tyler Lawson @Nyx did not play in the VHL in Season 94. Tyler grew from 184 TPE to 251 TPE over the season and is now a Free Agent. 15th Overall Selection Yermolai Nabokov @fonziGG did not play in the VHL in Season 94. Yermolai grew from 225 TPE to 294 TPE over the season. And finally, the last selection of the first round of the S93 VHL entry draft, 16th Overall Selection Ray Stanton @horoscope also did not play in the VHL in Season 94. Ray grew from 176 TPE to 302 TPE over the season. Some honourable mentions: Phil Taylor @Legacy and Connor Hellebuyck @HockeyFan4Life are the first two players from the Season 93 Draft Class to Retire. Outside of the first round selections, there are two more players who played in the VHL during Season 94 VHL season. Second round selections, Miner vHLer @Rhynex Entertainment(17th Overall Pick) and Herald Benson @Benson (19th Overall Pick) played in the VHL in Season 94. Miner vHLer had 10 goals and 27 points in 72 games with the Calgary Wranglers, and grew 325 TPA over the season from 238 TPE to 563 TPE. On the other hand, Herald Benson is the first goalie selected in the Season 93 Draft Class to play in the VHL. Herald started in 65 games for the D.C. Dragons, posting a record of 16 Wins, 40 Losses, and 8 Overtime Losses. Herald Benson finished with a 91.3% Save Percentage with a 3.79 GAA. Miner vHLer Rookie Experience Miner vHLer @Rhynex Entertainment was given a final decision, late surprise by GM @leandrofg right before the start of Season 94. A last minute call up by the Calgary Wranglers GM gave young and promising rookie winger Miner vHLer an early taste of the VHL. As a player who was deemed not ready for the VHL and 1 year from being 2 years away from being a stud for the VHL, the expectations coming into the VHL for Season 94 was wide open. Simply put, there was no expectations what so ever. Miner vHLer finished Season 93 in the VHLE with the Oslo Storm, where he finished with an incredible 2 goals and 4 points in 82 games played, regular season and playoffs combined. A very (un)remarkable season, abide winning the Renaissance Cup. With a starting TPA of 398, Miner vHLer may have been the lowest ranked skater heading into the VHL for Season 94. On top of that, at least 144 of the 398 TPE were allocated in skills in which most people say are "useless" skills and a waste of points. So with all this said and done, Miner vHLer could be said to be a super underdog and dark horse rookie in Season 94 of the VHL. Miner vHLEr, while being a very raw prospect and rookie, is a very intelligent and discipline player. With given full reins to play and on top of that to do so with the teams best, the VHL of vHLer came out and shined. Playing on the top line for the Calgary Wranglers, Miner vHLer adapted quickly to the big league hockey of the VHL. Or at least, to the best of his capabilities. At 67 games, with only a few left to play in Season 94, Miner vHLer has achieved a better season than any seasons beforehand. So far, with 9 goals, 25 points and an impressive Plus 28, one could say Miner vHLer has been having a spectacular season given the circumstances and expectations. Add in to the equation, Miner vHLer is also shooting the puck at the most efficient ratio on the Calgary Wranglers, scoring 10.23% of all his shot attempts. Miner vHLer is also living up to his highly disciplined scouting report, having taken 0 minor penalties so far in Season 94, a very tough task given his player rating and how many minutes he plays (averaging 27.60 minutes played per game). All in all, it has been an incredibly successful season for Miner vHLer as he embarks in his journey to become a professional hockey player in the VHL, through taking baby steps and getting his feet wet in the big leagues one season earlier than expected.
