Another thing we must consider in this discussion is the medium by which the VHL functions primarily. Allow me to elaborate. The VHL has been operating for over 15 years now. Around the time that the VHL began, blogging was still an incredibly popular medium. In fact, in 2005 it was reported that around 32 million Americans read blogs. At this time, iPod touches weren't even a thing yet. As technology has advanced quickly over the last 23 years, the way in which people are entertained, communicate, and even learn has changed. When I was a kid I would come home from school, log into AIM (as long as my mom wasn't on the phone), and would have maybe an hour to talk with a few friends through written messages. Today, people have constant contact, and most people spend their downtime scrolling through short videos that are usually 30-120 seconds in length. The number of people who listen to audiobooks and podcasts is at an all-time high. A little under a year ago it was reported by the NAEP that only 1 in 3 thirteen-year-olds picked up a book to read for fun. This also comes with the alarming fact that mathematic and reading test scores are at an all-time low in the US. And now the question that remains is this, What does any of this have to do with the VHL? I'm glad you asked. The primary content found on the VHL is written content. Everything from articles to announcements and in-between. Staff writes to one another to discuss problems and create solutions and most reports, like mine that you referenced, come with data points and charts that must be read and comprehended. The VHL, as a primarily writing-based forum, is trying to survive in an age where audio-visual is the preferred form of entertainment. Most people don't go to their blogs to write about their opinions anymore, they go to TikTok. And, if they do write something it's usually within a few hundred characters allowed on Twitter. While this may not create a solution to the perceived problem, I believe it helps us to understand why retention is hard in this field.

Hey everyone! It’s been a while since we talked about the recruiting perks that we have here in the VHL. You can get a fuller explanation of that by going to this article. Anyways, in order to encourage some new members to come to the VHL, we have been approved to offer you some extra TPE as an incentive to bring in new members. Between the S87 Trade Deadline and the S88 Trade Deadline, you’ll have the opportunity to earn up to 5 uncapped TPE simply by bringing people in. If you bring in one person, you get 1 uncapped TPE. If you bring in two people, another 1 TPE. But, if you bring in a total of 3 people or more, you get 5 uncapped TPE. Meaning, for the third person you would claim 3 uncapped TPE. Here's where it gets really fun. At the link above, if you clicked it, you’d know that we have a recruit-a-friend program here in the VHL. Let’s say you get three friends to join the VHL between those trade deadlines, BOOM 5 uncapped TPE. Now, if they stick around and earn TPE, you’ll get even more. Here’s the breakdown that can be found in the article above. 100 TPE EARNED: 1 TPE for yourself 250 TPE EARNED: 4 TPE for yourself 500 TPE EARNED: 10 TPE for yourself Total 15 TPE This is a great way to increase the size of our community and earn some TPE for your own player. You can also try to “reactivate” some inactive members. They can be considered your recruit as long as they have been inactive for three seasons or six months. To make sure you get credit for the people who join, create a thread HERE and make a new topic. Title the topic your username and recruits, so for me it would be “thadthrasher’s recruits”. Inside the thread you can tag the user who you have recruited. If they are recruited within the S87-S88 TDLs then make sure to number them so we can keep track. Once they reply confirming that you did recruit them, you’ll start getting your bonus TPE. To claim the TPE you need to copy the link to where they replied “yes” to you recruiting them. Then, go to the portal, CLAIM UNCAPPED -> OTHER -> RECRUITMENT. After the initial bonus, if you want to claim TPE when they hit 100, 250, and 500 TPE you have to make the update in the forum yourself. When you do, do the same process as above to claim. Now, just a word of caution here. It is against our Code of Conduct to create multiple accounts. Doing so may result in TPE bans, forum/discord bans, or even a permanent ban. So, don’t try it. Hey there, from your friendly neighborhood recruitment guy! One of the things we are going to be doing in the near future is reaching out to the list of inactive users we have. That list has been compiled with emails and we hashing out the details now. Our hope is to encourage them to return to activity here in the VHL. With that, I wanted to use this space to bring some insight into what I've found while doing this work. Most of this is simply to go "wow, interesting" as you look. But, who knows, maybe this will create some fruitful discussions. Now, while our league is much older than 2013, I believe that is the year we moved forum hosts (though I could be wrong). What I'm not sure about is if the forum is counting every existing account prior to the move as a new account in the system, so keep that in mind. The following data is not including accounts that have been marked as spam accounts nor ones that have been banned.
