‘Hollywood Hlozek’ Talks Free Agency After Moving to LA

Jan Hlozek made headlines when he opted to swap Europe for the West Coast when he signed for the Los Angeles Stars in free agency. The Czech defenceman looks to be truly having a breakout season in California, racking up 28 points in his first 20 games as the Stars began their S81 campaign in convincing fashion. The Stars currently sit in 2nd place in the NA Conference, and look well on their way to another successful campaign, and Hlozek said that he was thrilled to be part of a team that was competitive every night. “It’s been a great experience here so far. The team has the right mentality, and that’s why I signed here. The guys expect a lot from themselves, and we know we have the talent to be winning every night. Sure, that doesn’t happen all the time, but either way, it’s been a great start to the season,” Hlozek said. Speaking on his own hot form, the Czech blueliner said that his personal success came second to the team’s success. “For me, winning is number one. I’m just glad that I’m able to contribute to the team’s success so far. I have fantastic linemates, who are finishing the chances that I’ve been able to create so far. We have a long way to go, but the signs are good,” he said.

All part of my plan to get some ~~ENGAGEMENT~~ Also, being on Riga, why would I pay any attention to the playoffs? -
1. I think we want to be better than 0.500. We have some work still to do, but the early signs are good 2. I completely missed it. Sucks after winning my group last year. 3. I guess history. I didn't focus much in school though 4. I need a new car after moving here! 5. I'm gonna have to Google and get back to you 6. Falafel

(November 26, 2021 - CZHockey) - Jan Hlozek’s future is known. Well, for one season at least. The Czech defenceman, who spent three seasons in the VHL with the Riga Reign, swapped the Baltic for the Pacific coast after signing a one-season agreement with the Los Angeles Stars in the NA Conference. The move came as a surprise for many, given that Hlozek had previously expressed his desire to remain in the European Conference, but the Topolna native told CZHockey that his previous plans changed after discussing his potential move with the Los Angeles Stars management. “Well, I said that I wanted to play on a contending team, one that would have a shot at making a run at the Continental Cup this season, and when Los Angeles came calling, it was certainly an interesting proposition for me. They got to the conference semi-finals last year and maintained a large amount of that team. So of course, if they’re offering something, I’m going to be interested,” Hlozek said via Zoom call. The diminutive defenceman, who scored at almost a point per game clip last season, didn’t appear to settle well in North America during his two seasons in the VHLM. Hlozek represented the Saskatoon Wild and Miami Marauders, winning a Founder’s Cup with the latter, during his two seasons over the pond, but expressed his delight at being drafted by Latvian club Riga Reign in S77. However, with more experience and maturity under his belt, Hlozek said that he felt the time was right to make the move back over the Atlantic Ocean, even further from home. “I’m older now. I know what needs to be done, and I know how to handle myself both on and off the ice. Being so far from home shouldn’t be a problem any more, and from what everyone is saying, Los Angeles is an amazing place to live. Plus, the team has been a massive help in getting adjusted with everything,” he stated. It was widely reported that several other teams were interested in Hlozek’s services during the free agency period, and offers reportedly came in from the Seattle Bears, Toronto Legion, Warsaw Predators, and Prague Phantoms. In what could be considered a rare move, Hlozek spoke candidly about his negotiations with other teams, and also shone a light on what made him choose Los Angeles as his next destination. “Honestly, if you had asked me where I thought I wanted to go, it would have been Prague. I would love to play in the VHL for the team that represents my country. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, I didn’t get the sense that they were too interested in having me. Warsaw also was on my list, I just wasn’t sure on where they would be heading next season, and I’ve just spent three seasons on a team and not made it past the first round of the playoffs. Then we move to the North American Conference. I will say that I was super close to joining Toronto. The management team there is amazing and made an amazing offer. I would love to be part of that project one day. I can say the same for Seattle. The management team there tried so hard and I really respect their effort. There was just something about joining LA that felt right at this time,” Hlozek said In an interesting twist of fate, Hlozek was one of the final major free agent signings to be made, putting pen to paper roughly 12 hours after free agency opened. The Czech defeceman said that this was, in a large part, due to him being on holiday in the United Arab Emirates, where the time difference is +12 hours from the Pacific Coast. “It was a funny experience. I started fielding calls through my agent and then free agency opens when it’s already like 2am local time. I told my agent that I would make my decision, sleep on it, and then sign in the morning when I had woken up. Of course, when I woke up, I had literally hundreds of messages on my phone. It took a while to go through them, but none of them changed my decision about signing with LA,” he said. In his debut game for the Los Angeles Stars, Hlozek gave the California crowd a glimpse of what they might be able to expect this season. The Czech defenceman recorded a career-high five points as the Stars got revenge over the reigning champions, the Vancouver Wolves, in a 6-5 win. “My debut couldn’t have gone better. I’ve got great teammates, and to start the season in such a way was fantastic. Credit to the guys as they worked so hard and it felt so good to get the win,” he said. Despite the hot start, Hlozek has been held off the scoresheet entirely over the last three games as the Stars went 1-2 to sit at 0.500, including losses to the Calgary Wranglers and Seattle Bears. “Obviously that’s not where we want to be, but I feel like we’re progressing. We have a number of defensive things that we want to work out, but the guys are fully bought in,” Hlozek concluded. Along with Hlozek, the Los Angeles Stars also made a major free agency signing in net, as legendary cup-winning goaltender Rara Rasputin signed with the California club for what many might to consider to be his last run at a title. Hlozek noted that having a goaltender of Rasputin’s calibre in net was a major factor in him deciding to join the team. “I know that there was a lot of interest in Rara from around the league. Many of the GMs with whom I spoke during the negotiation period appeared to hint that they could be signing him. I think that says a lot about his talent and the type of person he is. I don’t want to say that I signed in LA purely after Rara signed there, but it was great to know that the team was able to convince him to come. He’s going to be a big part of our success this season,” Hlozek said. Weeks 28/11 + 4/12

BRNO (November 17, 2021, CZHockey.cz) Jan Hlozek will be heading for free agency. The star blueliner made the announcement on social media on Wednesday after spending three underwhelming seasons with the Riga Reign. Hlozek will enter the market on the back of a point-per-game season in which the diminutive defenceman came into his own offensively. The 24-year-old, born and raised in Topolna, Czech Republic, made it publicly clear that he was becoming frustrated with the Reign's lack of team success, having missed the playoffs in both S78 and S80. The Reign took what some believed to be a reach when they selected Hlozek eighth overall in the S77 VHL Entry Draft. Hlozek spent his first post draft year back in the VHLM as a member of the title-winning Miami Marauders organization. This win gave him some name recognition, but many in the VHL still see the Czech defenceman, who is set to represent Team Mercanaries at the upcoming World Cup, as somewhat of an engima. Hlozek spoke to CZHockey late on Wednesday evening, after the Topolna native made his announcement that he would not be resigning in Riga, and he said that he was grateful to the Reign for taking a chance on him four seasons ago. "It's been a super tough decision. I'm amazing thankful to the management for drafting me and giving me the space and time to develop. I really enjoyed my time in Latvia, but as I'm entering my prime, I want to be on a team that I believe can contend for the title, and I'm not sure Riga is in that position," Hlozek stated. The Reign's roster is full of star talent, including Cabe McJake and Linus Zetterstrom, but despite having one of the most fancied rosters on paper, the Reign missed the playoffs entirely last season with a sixth placed finish in the European Conference. The Latvian side has struggled for goaltending following the shock retirement of goalie Calvin Harvey, and Hlozek said that the team's struggles this season may have been the result of inaction taken during the off-season. "I guess one of the things that frustrated me the most was that I thought we were close to building something special in my time here. We just needed to make one or two good moves to strengthen our roster in areas that we needed to, but that didn't really happen and I didn't get a sense that it would happen any time soon. It was disappointing as the guys put their all in throughout all my time here, but we just couldn’t seem to put it together when we needed to most," Hlozek stated. So where does Hlozek see himself ending up? The Czech blueliner said that he was still yet to make any decision on where his future lay. "This is something that my agent is handling mostly at the moment. I've spent a lot of time making this decision, so I haven't really thought about where I will go. The only thing I know for sure is that winning is at the top of my agenda," he said.

1. We need some milk 2. I look at Vancouver and think, man we have better players, but look what they're doing. 3. Bratislava as it's my local team. 4. We're not going to be getting into that today. 5. I'd like to play in Texas somewhere. And in Europe? maybe somewhere like Poland or Ukraine. 6. What's baseball?

The Riga Reign lost 4-0 to the Helsinki Titans on Thursday evening in what was another torrid showing for the Latvian club. Despite having one of the most promising rosters in the VHL, the Reign are once again flattering to deceive. The Baltic nation’s team currently sits in sixth place in the European Conference, and defenceman Jan Hlozek expressed his frustration following the loss to Riga’s Finnish rivals. “It’s frankly ridiculous. A team with as much skill and talent as we have should not be sitting outside of the playoffs,” Hlozek said. The Reign missed the playoffs in Hlozek’s rookie season, and were unceremoniously dumped out of the playoffs in the first round against the Warsaw Predators last season. It looks to be yet another season in which the Riga Reign are not contenders for the Continental Cup, and Hlozek said that his patience was staring to run dry. “I don’t know why we can’t put together consistent performances. I don’t know why we have such a good roster on paper, and a good roster in training, but when it comes to the games, we play like we don’t have a clue what we’re doing. I’ve had just about enough of it,” the defenceman remarked.

PRAGUE, October 15 (CZLife) - Jan Hlozek of the Riga Reign may only be in his third VHL season, and in what some may say would be the prime of his career, but that hasn’t stopped the Czech blueliner from taking steps to set himself up for life after hockey. By all accounts, the life of a professional athlete is far removed from that of the general public. For a start, your skills are, to a certain extent, temporary. Once a player reaches the age of 35, their marketable assets are almost out the window and they have to move into other spheres to make a living. That’s not to say that hockey players don’t get a headstart when it comes to life after hockey. For a start, smart financial investing and the ability to rein in spending during their professional careers mean that many players are able to take it easy after they hang up the skates. However, other players have a penchant for the flashy lifestyle. They spend their substantial pay checks and are left with almost nothing when they do finally decide to leave the game. The Riga Reign are having yet another disappointing VHL season, with the team from the Latvian capital on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoff push. Despite the internal turmoil at the team, and the lack of results, Hlozek cut a relaxed figure as he spoke with us at CZLife to touch on themes outside of hockey. “I think making yourself a marketable asset off the ice is just as important as making yourself a marketable asset on the ice,” Hlozek said. Since making his name in Riga, Hlozek has looked to invest in numerous projects and brands as a means of diversifying his portfolio. “I’ve got involved with some manufacturing companies, some tech companies, some fashion companies. I’ve got a great team of people around me and it’s great to be able to be involved in some of these projects. I always want to stay on top of the latest trends, and doing things like this helps me stay in touch with what’s current and what’s making money,” the Riga Reign’s #14 said. When it comes to fashion, Hlozek is co-owner of Latvian streetwear brand BLTC, whose items touch on the themes of industrial decay and the post-Soviet malaise. The Czech defenceman also has several holdings in fintech companies based in neighboring Estonia, which is seen to be one of Europe’s great hubs of innovative technologies. Despite having this detailed portfolio, which could in theory leave Hlozek with more money than he could ever dream to make on the ice, the hockey star said that he was always looking for more opportunities. “I’d love to own a restaurant in Prague, in Brno. Not just a place where it has my name on the wall, but a place that I can truly be proud of, that makes innovative food, uses innovative techniques, gets into the Michelin Star book. That’s one of the things that I’m working really hard to make happen at the moment,” Hlozek said. Hlozek’s father Jiri was one of the Czech Republic’s greatest ever players. He made his career with the legendary Vsetin and Bratislava teams in the 1960s and 1970s, and he was part of the legendary Slovan Bratislava team that became the first team based in Slovakia to win the Czechoslovak Federal League. In retirement, Jiri Hlozek became a coach and led Vsetin to their run of unparalleled success in the Czech Extraliga in the 1990s. “For my dad, hockey is everything. He couldn’t imagine life without being at the rink for eight hours a day. Despite how much of an icon he is for Czech hockey, he still gives all the kids his time, helps out, cleans up. For him it’s his whole life. I guess I’m different in that way,” Hlozek Jr. says. Jan Hlozek has spent much of his professional career outside of the Czech Republic, chasing opportunities in the VHL. He spent one year in Saskatoon, one in Miami, and is now in his third season in Riga. For the young blueliner who is scoring at almost a point-per-game clip this season, hockey may not be the be all and end all in life. “I guess I’m trying to see what I can do outside of hockey. I don’t really want to go into coaching like my dad, because I would always be compared with him. At least when we play now, he was a forward, I’m a defenceman. No-one really tries to compare us and I can do my own thing. I would never be as good of a coach as my father is, and I want him to have his legacy untarnished by whatever I would try and do,” Hlozek Jr. says. But what other options does Jan Hlozek have? Does he take the route that many former players have and make appearances on TV as pundits? “I’m not a huge fan of that type of work. For me, it seems super fake to have these guys out there in terrible suits on TV criticizing the guys that are on the ice. Sure, maybe the money is nice, and I guess it’s kind of cool to just be able to sit down and talk about hockey, but that’s not really what I’m interested in,” Hlozek remarked. Taking the traditional career trajectory of VHL players into account, Jan Hlozek’s career will, in the near future, begin to go onto the downswing. For the Topolna native, creating a range of opportunities and possibilities for himself outside of the game seems to be the right move in setting himself up for life after hockey. But the question remains. Does this mean that his attention isn’t fully on the season at hand? “Of course I’m fully committed to what we’re doing in Riga. I mean, I can’t let my teammates down like that. I come to the rink every day and I give my all for this team. What I do in my spare time is my own business. I want to win now. I’ve said that,” he concluded.

The Riga Reign have had a somewhat mixed start to S80. After starting the season without a designated starting goaltender, management moved quickly to acquire Andrew Bowman from the Toronto Legion, but that seemingly hasn’t altered the team’s fortunes. The Latvian club started the season relatively well, hovering above a 0.500 record, but the Reign’s form has completed turned over the past week. The Reign have gone 0-5-1 in their last six teams, leaving the Baltic nation’s premier club sitting in sixth place in the European Conference. Despite having some of the league’s most promising talent, many of whom who are surely meant to be entering their prime after being drafted in S75, the Reign are once again languishing in the table in a place far below where many expected them to be. “It’s super frustrating. Every season I’ve been here, the hopes have been high that this is the year when it will finally come together for us. We have all the pieces we need to be successful, but we just can’t get the results. I wish I had the answer for you, or that I knew what we could do to turn this situation around. But at the moment, nothing we seem to do works,” Riga Reign defenceman Jan Hlozek told reporters on Friday.

1. Disappointing. It seems to be quite similar to last year. We have no consistency. 2. Tarzan Boy 3. I mean, I'm pretty new to here, but surely Aloe Dear or someone like that has been the most consistently good player. 4. Gotta be my boy Thunder 5. Colombia, Brazil, and Australia 6. Go sens go
