  1. Our PIM lord and savior! And yes, Edwin was my first real attempt with a player although I don't think they let me count Encarnacion as a first-gen officially cause I had two trash-tier players in the earlier seasons (Rohan Davey and Ron Dayne III)
  2. As someone who has been tracking/looking up first-gens for draft rankings and media, I think this is a really good idea. At the very least, it'd be good to have a badge to show if a player is a First-Gen.
  3. Thanks for the quick talks @Arceand welcome to the Vikings @Toast, look forward to having you with us for the next couple of seasons!

  5. Stockholm Vikings extend an IA offer to Jean Mercier
  6. Yeah my idea was the pre-builts would mainly be used by first-gens (hence why I made it 3 attributes since all of the first-gens catch-up TPE would be divisible by 3, which I don't think would work out too bad as the latest created first-gen (84 TPE) would have 28 in 3 different attributes, which sounds alright as a base although admittedly I haven't really been following VHLM Hybrid builds too much) but I guess we can't rule out recreates using the same system which would skew it a little.
  7. I think that's a good idea yeah! Obviously I'm talking about stuff that I'm not really in a good position to talk about because I don't know coding but maybe potentially you get taken to a screen just after you create and before the player is officially created get to a screen like this which assigns your starting TPE to a set of attributes based on the build you're after (with Custom taking you straight to the Player Management screen). Like something like this could show up if you clicked Scorer perhaps.
  8. This table above shows how many first gen players from the range of the given draft classes went on to surpass 200 TPE (E.g. For the top one, there were 203 first gens taken from the Season 63 Draft Class to the Season 71 Draft Class that surpassed 200 TPE in their VHL career). As you can see, we are at our lowest number for quite some time, in fact you would have to go back to the Season 61-Season 69 cycle (drafts that took place in 2018-2019) for a lower first gen over 200 TPE count and that’s only because the Season 61 Draft Class had just two first gens surpass 200 TPE. There are many reasons why we could be experiencing this dip; many people point to Covid sparking a lot of new players joining and engaging in the league in the mid Season 70’s and we also don’t have quite as many avenues for advertisement as we did in the past, due to some irregularities we had in the past with reddit. But the main thing that we should be doing is instead looking at what we can do with the players that we bring in to do our best to make sure they stick around because, from what I can gather from my research, at our current pace that number is more likely to continue going down in the future than it is to go up. So my first suggestion for helping with this is making the forum site and the portal more accessible for the new VHL user. We have to acknowledge with the scope of our advertising that we are not necessarily going to be recruiting new members to the VHL who are 1) going to be familiar with forum layout or 2) have the patience to stick around and ask how to make a player when they don’t know how to. This is where my first point comes in, we need to make the link to the Create a Player area of the portal catch the eye. As it stands, on the PC version of the website, the only direct link to Create A Player is embedded between several other options at the top of the screen. It’s even worse on mobile where the only direct link to creating a player is hidden behind the sub-menu button. There are two ways that I think you potentially fix this. One is that you amend the Create a Player forum slightly, make it so that clicking on “Create a Player” in the main forum area links you to the Create a Player area of the portal (this is also the method that the SBA use for player creation). The other potential option is making a clickable banner underneath the Create a Player heading that stands out a bit more than “Create a Player” does in the sub-menu, an example of a concept of this can be found below (To point out in advance, there will be quite a few concepts in this piece and that’s what they are, concepts. I’m not saying what I provide is a good banner, but that is where I believe a good banner would be.) From there, we move on to making the portal more accessible to the new member. This is probably not what the developers of the portal want to hear but for every step we make towards putting items that use to be forum-based onto the portal, more users will dedicate more of their VHL time on the portal, so we need to increase the amount of information about the VHL that the user can pick up on the portal. I’ve already mentioned in the past about how we should have clearer links to important pages rather than burying them under the manage tab, but I’ve got a few more concepts here. One such example would be a tip that the portal would provide to new members about where to apply their TPE upon creation. We have taken routes to combat the amount of people adding small amounts of TPE to every single attribute on creation with the First-Gen reroll, but why not give these players a warning ahead of time that spreading your attributes in that manner is not going to net the best results for your player so that they are better prepared upon creating their player? Another method of interaction with the user could be to have the Player Management screen display how much capped TPE they’ve earned in a given week and provides a link to a pop-up box that gives a quick breakdown on what other capped TPE tasks are available to them. The example below is what could potentially pop up for a member who submitted for welfare (therefore 4 of 10 rather than 4 of 12) and the second is an example of what the pop-up box could show for a VHL.com graphic. Finally, a way to potentially help newer users with the VHL Trivia task, the one that is probably the hardest for new members given their recent join date. Why not use the opportunity to link to the VHL Discord so that any struggling user knows where to ask for help with a trivia question? So those are my proof of concepts as to how to potentially help improve the First-Gens approach to the VHL. I know that the VHL probably want to make moves to add more currently forum based tasks like Fantasy Zone to the portal, but I really think the thing that should take precedence right now is creating a more new-user friendly version of the portal because, while it’s great and the developers have done a lot of terrific work with it, with how much it has grown it needs to evolve beyond the base structure that Will gave it (a subsection of the VHL for you to update your player) to something that can be engaged with by users who may not be familiar with how the VHL works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Right, that’s the proof of concept power hour out of the way, now to talk about other things that I think will help first-gen retention. Stop letting people having so many jobs at a time So this might stand out as a weird topic for helping first-gens, but bear with me on this one. I made a podcast talking about making more jobs PT equivalents and one of my listeners to that podcast was a user called SpicyGecko who, at the time, was a pretty promising first-gen user. After listening to the podcast they sent me a message about how they had a problem with people having so many jobs at once and how it reduces a new members ability to actively contribute to the site or try to improve their standing within the league by showing they can do a job well. Given the timing of the message in combination to their activity, it would not surprise me if this played a role in their eventual inactivity. While I do think there are ways that members can contribute to help the site without holding a job, I think the point they make is a valid one, there really is no reason why, especially when we are arguably at the best point in our league’s history when it comes to the number of personnel at our disposal that could actively help the league, some people are allowed to hold onto so many jobs at one time. I don’t see much of an argument for why a specific member in the VHL should not just be limited to one VHL job (e.g. Commissioner, Updater, etc.) and one GM job. Think about it like the VHLM, we try to encourage the members who are on the cusp of 200 TPE who are thinking of staying down to make the move up to the VHLE instead of sticking around the VHLM at a high capped level, so that they give the opportunity to other newer players to demonstrate that they can be good assets to the league. The same logic should work with jobs, if you get a higher-up/higher-regarded job than you’re currently on, by electing to also keep doing your old job on top of that, you’re effectively taking away an opportunity from someone else who could potentially prove that they can do a job for the league, so you should give up your lesser paid job once you take up your newer job. By all means, let them keep the relevant permissions so they can help contribute here and there if they so want to, but lets give more members the opportunity to contribute to the VHL so that maybe one day they can show what they can bring to the league and potentially rise to the same level in the future to that of the members they inherited their jobs from. VHLE Draft Change I’ve mentioned this idea in other point tasks I think a couple of times now, but we’re talking about things that will help boost the first-gen experience and I think this is one of them. Let me hit you with the least surprising thing you’ll hear today: Members in sim leagues like drafts. But what lessens the draft experience is when you have potentially three draft experiences with 48 hours, with two of said drafts not mattering for at least the next two and a half months. Instead, why not change up the experience so the user can experience a draft that would be immediately relevant to their interests the season after their other drafts to maintain their interest in the VHL for a longer period of time? My idea is to make it so that instead of entering the VHLE Draft in the same season as your VHL Draft, you enter it in the first off-season that you enter having surpassed the 200 TPE VHLE limit, basically limiting the draft to players that have exceeded 200 TPE over the last season. I talked about the other positives of such a move here, here and here if you want to read or listen to more of my thoughts on that. More Content Focused Towards Newer Members? So this is one thing that I don’t have a concrete idea for but I’ll bring up the concept of my thought here at least since it’s on my mind. One thing that helps keep newer members attention is seeing themselves acknowledged by their peers on the forum and we’ve had certain things in the VHL in the past that has been geared towards highlighting new members. For example, when I was in the recruitment crew I would run a VHLM Newsletter (unfortunately I can’t find any links to my old pieces since I’m guessing it's now in a hidden forum) that was mainly to give a breakdown of the VHLM and what activities were available that week but I would make sure to give a shoutout to the new members that joined that week. I also did the Draft Rankings (which I’ve kinda just filled since no-one else was doing them as I think they serve a good way of demonstrating to newer members that their earning activities are being noticed) and when STZ was in the recruitment crew, they also offered out graphics to new members of the forum, which is a pretty cool interaction especially given how good STZ’s graphics are. I don’t have anything particularly in mind that could fill that role, but maybe having more pieces of content that focus on members that have just joined would help to boost their activity and engagement with the site further. But this is obviously something that someone could also do off their own back with their graphics/media/podcast (in fact I believe Jardy does shout-out new creates on his podcast on occasion) so it doesn’t necessarily have to be a league job/VSN thing, but more just getting out there that if you want to keep people around, best thing you can do as a member is write about them and tell them how good they are. 2000+ words

  10. For week ending December 11th (or December 4th if you submit answers today and haven't done a presser already this week) Answer 3 questions for 1 TPE Answer 6 questions for 2 TPE 1. We've had an unfortunate dip in form recently and currently sit in seventh in the standings, what do you think the key will be to bringing our team back up the standings? 2. It's been fairly close this season, with just eight points separating third from seventh place. What's the situation in sports in the real world that you remember being the most closely-contested? 3. Who do you think stands out as the team's MVP halfway through this season? 4. How early is too early to put up Christmas decorations? 5. So in the VHL back in the Season 50's, we briefly allowed members to have 2 players at the same time. If you could make a second player to accompany your first, what kind of player would you make and what would you call them? 6. The Career Point Tasks were recently amended, what did you make of the changes to them?
  11. - I like the addition of podcasting as an option for the Career Point Tasks and I could definitely see myself doing one of those with a future player (although not sure if I would do the Biography if it turns out that, like the writing equivalent, it's required to be a longer length than the rest of the PTs, since it only says 10 minute minimum atm). As an older member though it is interesting because, especially round the S30s-S40s, there was always a lot of talk about finding a way to introduce a graphic equivalent to the Career PTs, so to see it get beaten to the punch by Podcast Career PTs is pretty funny. I think especially with the changes since S70 to Career Point Tasks that graphics could become a viable option for Career PTs given that the written Career PT limits are now shorter than a regular PT, whereas when the discussions were being had about graphics career PTs, the discussion was about finding a graphic equivalent to an 800-1000 word task. - Moving Biography away from the eighth season is a good move that makes obvious sense. I think only Gustav and V2 did biographies in this era of Career PTs out of the eight season players in the nine possible draft classes that could have done so, so no point keeping it as it was. - I also like Veteran Presence changing to Career Retrospective as the latter will prove to be a fitting last Career PT for a player to do and Veteran Presence's limits always seemed a bit early for the context (writing about how you're a veteran sometimes only four-five months after writing about being a rookie). - However, I think I would've preferred it if the limits and TPE payouts for Biography and Career Retrospective were flipped (so 400 words for Bio, 800 for Career Retrospective). I feel like Career Retrospective would make for a very easy PT to write 800 words about since you already have many seasons of data that you can reference (in fact a few of the Biographies I've seen read more like Career Retrospective's than Biographies, which are supposed to focus more on personal life) whereas Biography can be a real chore to make 800 words for (I am slightly biased in this situation because I honestly can't think of anything I can do for my current player Biography wise, but I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest everyone would find it easier to write 800 words for a Career Retrospective than a Biography). I also think the Career Retrospective task takes place early enough in a player's career that it will still be very much in their interest to submit a longer PT to earn more TPE unlike the Biography pre-change which was far too late. Also, the big thing I liked about the original change to five timed career PTs was it took us away from an era where we were encouraging new players to do a PT that wasn't befitting of the VHL experience (Once a Bio is done, a user won't have to write anything as long in the VHL for close to another 2 years), so I'm not sold on bringing back big PTs for the start of a player's career that potentially gives the wrong impression to a new member as to the workload they'll have to commit to. I do think the way they went with will work out fine, but this idea was just what I think might work better. - The VHLE PT I'm also a little iffy on as well, more-so because the limits seem a little strange. Since the S83 VHLM Draft Class, players who exceed 200 TPE heading into that draft may elect to bypass that draft and play their pre-VHL draft season in the VHLE, but the impression I get is that they aren't eligible for the PT (based on the talk in the comments of the thread saying how players who play 9 VHL seasons won't be able to participate in it), and I think that could lead to some confusion in the future. There are also fringe cases that may need to be accounted for as well, like if say an equivalent player to Elias Lampi crops up in the future, a player who only joined 7 weeks before the VHL draft and just fell short of 200 TPE VHLE limit pre-draft, but is a max earner that could potentially be called up straight from the VHLM to the VHL next season to have 8 VHL seasons rather than 1 in the VHLE and 7 in the VHL, is it fair for them to miss out on the career PT given the only reason they missed out is they found the league very late in the draft cycle, thus already missing out on a lot of TPE beforehand? Edit: Just out of interest, I decided to just type out my career to date to see how easy it would be to get a Career Retrospective to 800 words, and just typing out the details of my career with little to no flavour/personality, no personal opinions on my performance, no mentions of the team's performance and no talk about expectations for the future and I got to 300, so I think 800 words is more fitting for that than 400.
  12. Nice to hear you’re doing well, I think we were all pretty immature back when those leagues were around to be fair, although I don’t think I realised you were that young at the time so I think I have less of an excuse haha. ISL was a good league, not sure if you were there for it but they did try to reboot it at one point, but it didn’t even get past a season unfortunately and think that was last league I saw Zach. I think the last league I saw Cole in was the USFL, but that was all the way back in 2014 now. Yeah Madden Madness was good as well, I didn’t get into it as much as others did, but I did wind up carrying over the player name I was using in that league over here (Ron Dayne). I do remember that league we helped run (Helberg was the commish though I believe), I’m trying to remember if it was called the GFA or the GFL, one was ours and the other was one Wade ran. Im doing well though, been in this league since 2013 now (had a different account to this one for the first eight years) and enjoying it even though hockey is not my first sport of choice or even third, fourth, fifth haha! If you were interested in getting back into leagues at some point, you’d find it’s WAY easier than it used to be, takes about 30 mins max to reach the cap each week and there are systems in place that let you earn a smaller amount of TPE without doing a PT so it’s not the excessive time commitment that these leagues once were. If you haven’t seen, there is an active football league that we’re affiliated with at efl.network and that’s been going for just over 5 real years now, so you may find some more familiar names there!
  13. I'll do the same as last year and offer up a TPE visualizer (like you can see in my draft rankings posts) for the historic draft class of the winning bidder's choice (can only be from a draft class between S62 and S86 though due to the required info not being accessible for earlier seasons).
  14. Hi there Mercenary, you would know me as lynchtheram if you remember me. I don't think there's too many more still around from those days, from ISL, Helberg is in this league (now under the name Scoop). From Madden Madness, there's a few who were in that league who're here (Renomitsu, Diamond_Ace, Lightning25). A few also drop in on occassion to create a new player (nhughes/Duckberg is the main one I remember, Molholt has also had a player recently).

Added an inactive column to indicate members that haven't updated in the last 3 weeks (So VHLM definition of inactivity rather than VHL Definition) - Added Silver Background to players who are first gens (and by First Gens I mean first player rather than players eligible for First Gen Perks). I was originally going to add it as a column, but was a bit concerned that another column would start to mess the formatting up on certain devices. I think this looks alright, but if anyone has any suggestions for better colours I'd be all ears to them. 16. For the Week Ending Dec 4th (Can use for W/E November 27th though if you submit answers today) Answer 3 Questions for 1 TPE Answer 6 Questions for 2 TPE 1. Getting close to half of the way through the regular season, what do you think of your player's performance to this point of the season? 2. What is your favourite hockey game/simulation engine of all-time? 3. A lot of people don't add to the fighting attribute because it takes away from their ability to improve their players ability, but if you could upgrade your fighting without having to add TPE (e.g. pick the level you want your fighting attribute to be at), would you improve it to seek out more fights or leave it as it is because you don't want to be a fighter? 4. Which VHL logo (can be VHL/VHLE/VHLM) do you like the look of the most? 5. Same theme of logos, but which VHL/VHLE/VHLM logo do you think is the least impressive? 6. The trade deadline for the VHL is approaching in two weeks, in your history of following hockey, what was the NHL trade that you were most surprised by when you read about it?
  17. This was just something I was interested in so I figured I'd look into it. I looked into two different elements of this: - First Gens who exceeded 200 TPE and have had a recreate exceed 200 TPE as well - First Gens who exceeded 400 TPE and have had a recreate exceed 400 TPE as well. The sample size that I used was from players in the Season 63 Draft Class (since that was the first class where I feel like we saw proper results from recruitment drives, although Season 62 was solid in this respect as well) up to players in the Season 74 Draft Class (with the reason I cut off there being I got to a handful of players in that class who, while still active with their recreate, had yet to make 400 TPE, so felt like carrying on using classes after that would skew the results.) For First Gens who exceeded 200 TPE, 45% of them have gone on to have a recreate that also exceeded 200 TPE. The Season 70 Draft Class had the most success on this front, with 10 of it's 14 (71.4%) 200 TPE First Gens going on to make another 200 TPE player, although this is a big outlier as the next best draft class in this category (Season 69) was quite a way down from that but still successful with 58.9%. The lowest draft class in this category was Season 72, with just 30.8% of its 200 TPE players getting a recreate over 200 TPE, but Season 65 (31.3%) and Season 74 (33.3%) were not too far ahead in that regard. For First Gens who exceeded 400 TPE, 54.7% of them have gone on to have a recreate that also exceeded 400 TPE, however this could rise to 57.1% if the active recreates that are still yet to hit 400 TPE from the S73 and S74 classes go on to surpass 400 TPE. The best draft classes in this regard were the Season 63 Draft Class (77.8%) and Season 66 (70.6%) and outside of the Season 74 Draft Class (which as mentioned before still has a handful of players that are active that can yet surpass 400 TPE), no class is below 40% in that category.
  18. @jacobcarson877 @Garsh Everything all good with the top post now?
  19. Oh I see what you mean, my bad, I'll fix that now
  20. Hmm, looks fine on my monitor Can you take a screenshot by chance?
  21. I will do, but if prospects aren't included in the finance tool, shouldn't that be looked into getting fixed? Like I mentioned in the article, prospects are finding themselves getting less money than the minimums say that they're entitled to and while not a super big amount, the amounts they are missing out on could help those out who buy free weeks for example. Alternatively, you could scrap the sub-200 TPE and 201-300 TPE categories and just make the minimum salaries 1.5M for Rookie and 2M for Prime since 1.5M is what anyone without a VHL team would be getting in the VHLM/VHLE so the 1M/1.25M categories don't really make sense in the current VHL climate.

  23. For those who aren’t familiar with rookie signings, the standard contract for a rookie to receive upon being drafted to the VHL is $3 million in their first season (although this is usually lowered if the player goes straight up to the VHL in their first season) and then two more seasons of $1 million to take them through to the end of their rookie contract. This is because VHLM and VHLE salaries do not count against the cap and $3 million is the maximum amount a player not in the VHL can receive (at least that’s what the rules seem to indicate but looking at the $4.5 million Helsinki gave Dixon, Rask and Grimes, maybe I’m wrong?). The subsequent $1 million is supposed to increase to the players minimum salary bracket (but interestingly this doesn’t seem to currently work with players still classed as prospects in their second and third season, as players in the 300-400 TPE bracket still are getting $1 million deals that are reserved for those lower than 200 TPE) so as to avoid overpaying a player should they qualify for the VHL in the ensuing season. E.g. If I were to commit to offering a player $3 million in their second season in their initial contract, should they break 400 TPE and automatically qualify for the E, reduction of salaries are not allowed, so I would be paying them at least $1 million more than their minimum salary and, with the salary cap as tight as it is, means I may have to make compromises elsewhere because I committed to giving a 400 TPE player a salary that usually goes to rookie contract players who are 600-700 TPE. However, one thing that is available for GMs to do is, before the off-season ends and once it is clear that the player is going to remain a prospect for their second or third contracted season, offer up a bonus that takes them up to that maximum $3 million they can earn while still outside the VHL. However, a lot of GM’s don’t currently do this which is interesting given that giving a player a greater salary is really the only direct way that a General Manager can help get a player on their team more TPE (or lose less TPE if this subsequently helps them be able to afford more depreciation packages in the future). So as you can probably guess by the title, there is one General Manager who is currently engaging in this and that is Frank. Of the 37 active players in prospect pools currently in their second, third or later (for players resigned after their rookie contracts expired who are still in the prospect pool) seasons, only one was offered a bonus, and that was Alex Bridges III who, while currently a Toronto prospect, was offered the deal by Frank while on the Vancouver Wolves. The same is true for the previous season (Season 85) as Vancouver offered bonuses taking four players who fit this bill (Dens Oden, Jimmy MacElroy, William Futch and Alex Bridges III again) to $3 Million deals as prospects something that only one other player outside of Vancouver received (Brodie Landry III on the Toronto Legion). So yes, well done to Frank for doing this, I like it when GMs to their best to set players up to be the best that they can possibly be.

  25. For the week ending November 27th (can use it for 20th though if you submit answers today) Answer 3 Questions for 1 TPE Answer 6 Questions for 2 TPE 1. We've started our season off with 8 wins after 14 games and currently sit in third place in the VHLE. What do you make of our teams start to the season? 2. Interestingly despite having six game winning goals, all six have been scored by different skaters, how much of a boost is it for the team to have several players who can contribute when the team needs it most? 3. Larry Abass Jr. has been surging up the point rankings and currently sits in fourth place in points with 20 through 14 games. How important have their performances been to the team's success? 4. The league leading Cologne Express have had a very lucky start to the season, playing 12 of their first 16 games against a Geneva Rush team that doesn't have a single defenseman. What is the luckiest thing that has ever happened to you? (Can be you personally or your player). 5. Black Friday/Cyber Monday is coming up this week, anything in particular you would like to see discounted that you'd be interested in buying? 6. Say the VHL had a Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale in their player store, what item would you be most interested in buying at a discounted price?
