With the deadline come and gone, we look at the wild team as a whole. After the seasons of dominance from the Wild, where they won back-to-back championships and 3 cups in 5 seasons just a few seasons ago. The Wild decided to sell this season, moving top players in star goalie Toby Bob and star right winger Captain McNugget Jr. Who has been with the team since season 94, playing 341 games while having an amazing 348 points in those games with 162 goals and 185 assists? During his time with the Wild, he was a part of the Founder Cup-winning S49 Wild, where he had an incredible run, putting up 25 points in only 16 games, being a big part of why the Wild won that season. Today Nugget Jr. joins a very good team in the Mississauga Hounds, giving them a nice boost with a high-end point getter in the VHLM.
In the deal, the Wild will get a good haul with young up-and-comer in the VHL ranks with James Harle playing in his second full season in the VHLM. In his young career he has played a total of 125 games, having 9 goals and 8 assists, totaling 17 career points. While he has yet to have a breakout season points-wise, expect him to have a bigger role in the Wild team that should lead him to having a higher point production for the remaining games this season and receiving top 6 minutes and power play time. Also coming the Wilds way with Harle are 2 picks in the s99 draft, although they are late picks, being the s99 MIS 5th and 6th round picks. The S99 draft is expected to be a deep draft, and the Wild are hoping to find some late talent to help bring this team back to the promised land of winning Founders Cups!
This wasn't the only deal the Wild made on deadline day; they also sent fan favorite and star goaltender Toby Bob over to the Philadelphia Reapers. Bob was an absolute workhorse for the Wild during his time here. Since getting drafted by the Wild 7th overall in the S97 draft, Bob would go on to appear in every single game for the Wild during his time here! Posting an impressive 62 wins, 51 losses, and 12 overtime losses in 125 games played. He would also have a .921 save percentage and a 2.2 goals-against average in those 125 games that he wore the Wild colors. Most people will remember him for his incredible playoff performance in the S97 postseason, where he would put on a clinic and take the Wild all the way to the semifinals. The Wild even being in the semifinals definitely was on the back of Bob, as he posted an incredible 5-win postseason, having a .924 save percentage and an amazing 1.79 goals-against average! He gave the Wild a chance to win every single game, only requiring them to score an average of 2 goals to win a game. Without out his efforts, the Wild surely would have surly not have had as much success in the postseason last season.
In return for Bob, the Wild have gotten two draft picks from the Reapers, both being for the s99 draft, one being s99 LVA 3rd rounder that should add a good player to the Wild, giving the core currently here a good boost and maybe even bringing the next Wild superstar player to lead them to the promised land of another Founders Cup. The same could be said for the other pick they received, being the 4th round pick that will bring another talent to the Wild next season, making them a stronger team for many seasons to follow.
While the Wild did have to say goodbye to some legends of the team, leading to the Wild losing the star power at this season's deadline, the Wild will now look to its core for a new superstar to emerge to lead the Wild into the next golden age of Saskatoon hockey. With the likes of up-and-coming players already performing at high levels, such as 6’1” Italian left winger Lorenzo Mancini, who is having a very strong season in his rookie season, putting up a very impressive 52 points in 57 games played. His play has not gone unnoticed, as the Wild are expecting to continue his outstanding play alongside Wild star CJ Daniels to keep the Wild in a playoff spot.
Another player the Wild will be leaning on is other star 6’4” American rookie defenseman Titus Cunningham, who is also having a very strong rookie campaign, posting up 51 points in 57 games, a very similar stat line to other rookie Mancini. Cunningham has been a very stable player for the Wild on both ends of the ice, being a big reason why the Wild are in a playoff spot at this very moment. A very interesting stat line for Cunningham is his 13 goals, but not because of his production but because 5 of those 13 goals have been game-winning goals for the Wild this season, showing that Cunningham is a clutch player when the Wild need him to be. Not only is Cunningham a very good offensive player, but he is also very reliable in his own end, having 108 hits and 115 shot blocks, showing that he is also a star defenseman in his own end! Wild fans are excited to see how Cunningham can take his game to the next level come playoff time!
The Wild also have 2 other rookies this season that may not be having the same offensive luck the other 2 are having but are still having quietly strong seasons for the Wild, that being center CJ Franklin and defenseman Chris Barbre. Franklin has been an instrumental part of the Wild team this season, being a leading guy on the team PK and centering the top line of Mancini and Daniels. While not boasting the same point production as his linemates, having 27 points in 57 games, what might go under the radar is him being a +16 on the season, having 115 hits and 18 blocked shots, showing he has a very strong defensive game. Having a more defensive role on the team might not show up on the scoreboard bord every game, but Franklin’s defensive play has helped the Wild keep pucks out of the net and given his team a moral boost for every big play he makes in his own end. On the other side of the D-line alongside Cunningham, we have another rookie in Chris Barbre, who currently has 19 points in 61 games played and has been an instrumental player on the Wild this season. While not being the most prolific scoring defenseman this season, he has been a great defensive player for the Wild this season, posting up 147 hits and 68 shot blocks, and those numbers continue to grow each and every game!
With the Wild losing some roster players due to the trades, there have been some new faces getting their chance to show what they can do in the VHLM, all of whom are going to be in this coming S99 VHLM draft and then the VHL S100 Draft. The first player joining the Wild is Anton Axelsson! Born in Sweden, Axelsson is looking to start his career off in a great way, playing good minutes with the Wild. The Wild had a weakness at center this season, with only CJ Franklin being the only natural one on the team. The 5’11” Swede comes from a long line of players from his known agent, who has represented VHL players such as defenseman Aron Nielsen, goaltender Jean Pierre Camus, and Milan Dvorak, all of whom have won titles in the VHL. With Camus in the VHL Hall of Fame, many Wild fans see Axelsson next in the long line of successful players in the VHL.
The next player that has Wild fans excited is Christopher Shadow, the first player in his family from this new VHL player agent. The right winger looks to fill the role that was left in the Nugget trade on the right wing, and fans are eagerly excited to see what Shadow can do for the Wild this season. The scouting report for the 6’3” American-born winger is that he is a speedy player who has an exceptional playmaking ability! Wild fans will surely be excited to see what Shadow can do come his debut game!
The next new face to the Wild is Clap-Bomb-Bar-Down, another player very similar to Shadow, in which this is the agent's first player in the VHL. Another center that the Wild needed desperately, he comes into the league at a massive 6’8” and weighing 250 lbs. Look for Down’s play not only to put up points for the Wild but also to strike fear into the hearts of opposing team players! Fans were very excited when the South African decided to sign for the remainder of the season and heard his first words being, “My first goal will be bar down.” Wild fans are looking forward to seeing this player play in the next sims.
One of the last two new faces to the Wild is defenseman Dmitri Komarov. This Russian-born player, similar to Down, is a massive 6’8” player, and although being 25 lb. lighter at 225 lbs. is going to be a massive help to the Wild’s blue line this season, with the team running two defensemen for most of the season, Komarov will add some much-needed assistance to the smaller d-core of the Wild. Fans are excited to see another player join the Wild and another from a longtime agent of players in the league, bringing the likes of players such as Sergei Evgeni and Kazimir Komarov! Fans wonder if Dmitri is related to this bloodline of VHL Russian-born players, but either way, they are super excited to have a man of his skill set join the team and are looking forward to seeing him play in the next sims.
The last player joining the Wild at the time of this article is goaltender Diego Adam. The Canadian-born goaltender is going to have some tough shoes to fill coming behind star goaltender Bob, but fans are hopeful that he can rise to the occasion. This goalie also being related to the team general manager has some fans wondering if he was really deserving of a position in the VHLM to begin with. Even though he is related to former Wild star Diego Machado, fans don't seem ready for Adam to take the helm as the starting goalie. Fans still await Adam’s first start in the coming games, even though it seems that the 6’4” goaltender from Canada is going to have his work cut out for him the remainder of the season if he wants to win over the die-hard Wild fans!
After a very solid season, the Wild are welcoming new faces into the family, and fans can see the stars rising for the Wild once again while wishing the star players that left nothing but luck in their future playing careers. But this has some fans are still wondering if the Wild made the right decision to sell at the trade deadline, as some thought this team would build on last season's deep playoff run and maybe win it all this season. Most fans do understand that this will give the team the chance to become the dynasty it was nearly 5-10 seasons ago and see the vision the general manager, Diego Machado, is envisioning for the Wild. Even with more players looking to join the Wild for the remainder of the season and the lines and roster still not set for playoffs for this season, fans are still excited to see what this team is going to bring come playoffs during the Saskatoon Wild whiteout out playoff season. This is Lord Farquaad of the Saskatoon Sports Center signing off from another Wild Article.
