  1. Haha niiiiiice! Yeah my players name is basically three famous Floorball players names thrown together ?
  2. Welcome to the league!
  3. Robin Galante Nilsson Junior Review Welcome to Robin Galante Nilsson's Junior Review. Today we will tell you a little bit about the Swedish Defenseman and his career so far up to the point where he decided to join the VHLM less than a week ago... Robin Galante Nilsson was born in the small Swedish town of Storvreta, which is about 15km from the city of Uppsala, the fourth largest city in Sweden. He started his hockey career in his hometown, loving the sport from the moment he first picked up a stick - however, ice hockey wasn't his only love early on. There is another hockey variation called Floorball or Innebandy that is big in Sweden and a number of other European countries, particularly Finland, Czechia and Switzerland, which Robin picked up as a young kid as well and played a ton. In fact his Floorball career started even earlier than his ice hockey career as it is easier for young kids to pick up the sport, so he was already running around hitting a Floorball at just four years of age whereas he didn't start Skating and picked up ice hockey on a team level until he was seven. Robin continued to play both sports simultaneously, alternating between them a bit. His hometown of Storvreta was home of one of the biggest and most successful Floorball teams in the country and he got to play both in their youth system and watch the men's team play a lot as a kid, watching them win multiple Championships along the way. He could literally walk to practice and to the games from his house whereas the nearest ice rink and successful ice hockey team were a bit further away, so Floorball was a bit more of a priority for him early on in life. However when playing himself, it became apparent to his coaches and scouts as Robin grew older that he was actually more talented as an ice hockey player than as a Floorball player. Even with relatively few practice time he started to perform really well against his opposition and become one of his teams best players on the hockey rink, compared to the Floorball field where he was only an average player in the Storvreta youth system even though he practiced five teams a week already as a ten-year old. It was at that time that his hockey coach approached Robin's parents, telling them that he saw a lot of potential in Robin but that he would only be able to tap into it if he focused more on his hockey career. This led to some long hard conversations and soul searching for Robin and his parenty but ultimately they decided to take the Coaches advice and concentrate on Hockey full time. Robin remained a huge Floorball fan but reduced his training time, leading to him being cut from Storvreta soon after and joining a smaller local team where he would only go on to play recreatively in his free time. After a long and grueling sommer workout at just thirteen years old, the Coach that had convinced Robin to change sports took him to tryouts for Almtuna IS, the biggest hockey team in nearby Uppsala which were playing in Allsvenskan, Sweden's second division, at the time. Robin impressed the scouts there even as a relatively raw player and Almtuna decided to take him on as a junior player. Over the next few years, Robin progressed steadily through Almtuna's junior system. He only played in a relatively small role early on, coming into the team late and as a player with not as much experience and training hours under his belt as many of his peers. But he quickly caught up to his teammates and his talent became obvious as he also started taking on a leadership role after his first season, being named an Assistant Captain at fifteen and then becoming Team Captain the year after. His team went all the way to the Junior Finals in his first year as Captain and while Robin wasn't the highest scoring player on the team at the time, it was still enough for the Coach of Almtunas Men's Team to offer him to join the Pro team's practice for next season. If he did well in summer camp then he would get a pro contract as well and could see some ice time for Almtuna, he told him and Robin was excited to take on that opportunity. That is, until he received a call from the VHLM one night...
  4. My Issues with the new Welfare/Pension system After years of absence I'm back in this league and you know what that means... More complaining and arguing from me, yay! The first topic I wanna adress is the changes to the welfare and pension systems that happened in my absence. I had actually learned about them a year or even longer ago when I first thought about maybe giving the VHL another shot, but then I saw those changes and they were one thing that made me decide against it. But let's take a step back first... So what am I talking about exactly? At some point after I left in 2017, not sure when exactly but it must have been early 2019 or even before that because thats when the thread was last updated, the VHL changed its Welfare and Pension system. It made some adjustments to the payouts but more importantly, the eligibility rules for players changed. So far players had counted towards a members "pension count" if they were above 400 TPE but that mark was raised to 700 TPE with no grandfathering whatsoever. So from one day to another (I would assume, I wasnt there when it happened after all), dozens or even hundreds of players lost their pension claims. That was quite unfortunate for me as someone with three 400+ TPE players but none above 700 TPE. In fact I had two players who capped out above 650 but juuuust missed out on the 700 mark, with one being as high as 684. So I learned that as someone who had been in the league for years, built multiple active players, held GM and Co-GM positions and won a cup in them and also held a bunch of other league jobs, I had no pension eligibility whatsoever. Apparently all my past contributions were simply too bad to count. Now the argument for those changes, from what I can gather, was "Inflation". TPE-inflation had happened in the VHL just as it had happened in other leagues in the past, so league leadership decided that 400 TPE today don't hold the same value as it did a few years ago, so the threshold had to be raised. And there is actually nothing wrong with that argument. If 400 TPE isn't a valid mark anymore where you can count someone as a true active who was involved for most of his career then by all means, change the threshold. But why on Earth was there no grandfathering? Why does this have to apploy to players from S40, S30, hell even going back to the very first seasons of the leagues existence, when inflation wasn't a thing. That's the first of my main issues I have with this: The internal logic of this argument isn't sound at all. Today's VHL has inflated TPE-counts compared to the VHL of the past so... The consequence is to take away stuff from the people who contributed in the past, when there was no inflation? That just doesn't make any sense. And it could have simply been fixed by grandfathering in pre-change players. That way the rule change could have been kept in place to deal with the very real inflation issues, without punishing people from other eras. My second big issue with this that this kind of change invalidates peoples achievements. It sends a pretty clear message that peoples past contributions don't matter if they didn't make it above 700 TPE, which was a mark that was significantly harder to reach back then than it is today. Only the most active people made it above it in the old days, maybe a handful of players per draft class at best. Plenty of very active and involved members, people with site jobs and who contributed to the community in many areas capped out in the 500-700 TPE range. It was a perfectly normal and acceptable TPE-range that made you a legitimate first line player on pretty much every team in the league who could contend for Awards, have HOF-caliber numbers and all that. I would go as far as arguing that 400 TPE in S35 are worth the same, both in terms of effort and sim-impact, as 700 TPE are today. But then you essentially tell people that all this doesn't matter because today, people can make it to 700 TPE much easier because they have plenty of TPE-opportunities available that didn't exist back then? This is a terrible message to send not just in general but particularly for someone who is contemplating a return to the league, as I did starting like a year ago. Seeing your past achievements invalidated in a league like this is really shitty, it's a very disheartening thing that I think could actually cost the league members and probably has done so already, but you never learned of it because it's something that is not gonna be directly visible, say in a case where some decides against a return. Let me make one last thing clear here while I close out this article: I am not asking for handouts, I do not want to be seen as a better player/member than I actually was or some sort of self-perceived legend of the olden days that needs to be gifted TPE. I certainly wasn't and even if I was, I still wouldn't deserve a guaranteed path to my next great player today. In the general TPE-mix of todays VHL, Media Spots and in connection with them Welfare and Pension seem to play a smaller role than they did back in the day, so the pure TPE-effects of this change of systems likely aren't too big and won't hurt me or any other returning member a whole lot. What does hurt the league however are the psychological effects of it, the perceived middle-finger it gives to players of the past as well as the lack of internal consistency of the arguments mentioned that I outlined above. I wanted to write this article because this rule has been one of the major factors that had prevented me from returning earlier which leads me to believe that it has probably been a factor for other people thinking about a return as well. And while I appreciate the efforts of some people in the league leadership to explain their reasoning for the way they handled this change, I ultimately find the arguments they provided unconvincing and lacking in internal logic and also I needed to get to a 1000 words. Thank you to anyone who took the time to work his way through this wall of text! Looking forward to your comments and opinions if you have any
  5. Review I am slightly confused about whether this is an actual like or not but I assume the latter . Nice read overall, good formatting and that purple color didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. Hope you'll get to make some more connections to people around the league and have them notice you as your career progresses so that you don't have to feel as if people in San Diego are the only ones who know you and care about your player. Overall I really liked the formatting and spacing of the article and the story you told! 8/10
  6. Review Nice read and good to see that you enjoyed your stint and saw it as something valuable for your progression despite the statline. Which just makes me even more sad that no team wanted to pick me up for the playoffs even ina just a 4th pairing role. But yeah, I enjoy these character-centric pieces and your choice of picture worked well to underscore the tone of the article, so good job. Looking forward to where you go in the Draft and what you can do next season! 8.5/10
  7. 1. There haven't been that many surprises so far, mainly because I had actually been checking in on the VHL occasionally even while I was gone and I talked to some people who are still here somewhat regularly. I also haven't looked that deeply into many of the concepts yet since my player kinda is still in limbo and neither drafted nor on a team thats in the playoffs, so I expect to find some more surprises once I get to engage more with all of those things. 2. I am mostly surprised by the amount of new names to be quite honest. I knew that the VHL had grown significantly so I expected there to be many new faces but probably the same amount of veterans I remembered, when I looked through some rosters over the last few days I saw junior teams where I knew exactly one name and everyone else was new. Didn't quite expect that ratio, but that's a pretty exciting thing in itself! 3. At the VHL level it's a fair amount actually, about half of them I would say and maybe I even know one or two more and they have just changed their names since. 4. People like der meister, Orbiting Death and Banack hounding me for literally years. I also had some issues with the VHLs structure back in the day which was why it could never excite me quite as much as some other leagues did, but I've heard that a lot of things have changed around here since and I'm curious to see if those structural issues has changed as well. 5. It's a movie quote from Monty Python's "Life of Brian". You can watch it here, that's probably better than any explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIAdHEwiAy8 6. Hmm that's a tough one... On-ice it would have to be my cup win with the Cologne Express, which was the first and also only cup both in the franchises history and for myself. Off ice it's probably my late-night Destiny sessions with Devise and ADV
  8. Doesn't seem like that offer from a playoff team is coming, so... HORNS UP !
  9. @Mr_Hatter and @MattyIce thank you for your offer so far, I'm still holding out to see if there maybe is a playoff team interested in my services so that I can get some actual playing time this season, but if there isn't one until the weekend I will let you guys know and join one of your teams
  10. I keep confusing myself with that name lol
  11. Which Playoff Team Could Fit Robin Galante Nilsson in? The VHLM playoffs are about to start while at the same time, new players who will be eligible for next seasons junior draft are still pouring into the league. Normally those players won't actually see playing time until they are selected by a VHLM team in the Junior Draft, but for some of them their VHLM career could start sooner as expected as some teams will be looking to use them as stopgaps to fill some holes in their rosters going into the playoffs. Could Swedish Defenseman Robin Galante-Nilsson be one of those players? Right now he is at pretty much the same developmental level as most of his peers but he has shown some progress already since announcing that he was planning to join the VHLM so could he be one of the few available short-term options that they playoff teams will take a look at, or is he still too raw? Today we will look at three teams that we believe could be possible destinations that might be able and willing to fit him in. Ottawa Lynx The Ottawa Lynx currently sit in 3rd Place in the Eastern Conference with just about over a point per game pace with 76 points in 70 appearances. There is quite the gap between them and the top-two teams of the Conference so it's gonna be interesting to see how competitive they can be in the postseason. Right now the Lynx are rocking a very top-heavy defensive core with strong players in Zachariah Kissliner, Jackson Philliefan and Jolly Greene Giant but almost no depth aside from those players. The only other Defenseman on their roster is Steve, a rather underdeveloped S75 Draftee. Galante-Nilsson could fit in with this team as a 3rd pairing option right away, who might even be able to challenge Steve for a spot in the Top-4 soon. Philadelphia Reapers The second team we want to look at are the Philadelphia Reapers who currently sit 4th in the Eastern Conference, with the lowest point count of all playoff teams at 61, and they are also currently in a tight battle with the Miami Marauders for the last playoff spot. Philadelphiy has a decent defensive corps of five players but they might be a spot available for Galante-Nilsson as the 6th D-Man here. Some of their Defensemen, while solid, haven't progressed too much lately either so depending on how the playoffs go, Galante-Nilsson could even have a chance to compete for some bigger minutes down the road. Saskatoon Wild Our last potential team we wanna look at are the Saskatoon Wild who, at 92 points, are also the strongest team of the bunch at least when looking at their record. Their Defense if decent but right now they only have four Defensemen signed so there could be a spot there for Galante-Nilsson on the 3rd Pairing, with bigger minutes being fairly unlikely. Unlike some of the other bubble teams however Saskatoon hasn't signed and S76 players so far, so it's doubtful that they are even interested in the Swede, or short-term solutions from the upcoming draft class in general.
  12. Review Probably not a team I will end up on but fun read nontheless! It's definitely nice to see VHL/VHLM teams with full rosters nowadays, given that things looked a lot more bleak when I was last around, when even competing teams often weren't even able to ice a full active top-6/4 and tanking teams roster could be almost completely empty. I gotta familiarize myself a bit more with todays league and roster structures and articles like this one are a great help for that.
  13. Review Nice blast from the past, pretty funny that this was one of the first articles I stumbled upon and it is from right about the time that I was last around. Hope you are doing well too ! Calgary was a franchise I respected quite a bit back in the day but those kinds of big tanking seasons always suck. Are teams still forced to do them as much nowadays as they had to back then or is it a bit of a thing of the past?
  14. 1. I have seen you show up in various hockey leagues recently, how much experience would you say you have in general when it comes to these kinds of games? 2. Which kind of team do you think would be a good fit for you? 3. What are important qualities that you are looking for in a GM? 4. Do you care more about winning or about having fun? 5. Is there a VHL/VHLM player that you are modeling your game after? 6. What's your favorite pre-game meal?
  15. After just making my return to the VHL, my player Robin Galante Nilsson and I are happy to take your questions now
  16. Hello VHL, I'm back! Some of you might still remember me from way back in the day or from some other some leagues but most of you probably won't know me at all, so I'm looking forward to meeting all you guys! Until then, let me take this opportunity and use my first Media Spot article to tell you a little bit about my plans for my player... Robin Galante Nilsson is a Defenseman out of Sweden. At 6'3 and 210 lbs he is a mature physical player already but his skills are still quite raw and will require some development time. I actually haven't quite decided yet what kind of build I want to aim for, but no matter if I will go for an offensive or defensive focus long term, the most important thing for now and in general is to be reliable and not a liability in your own end. So Defense, Skating and Passing will be a focus early on as I build towards being a valuable part of a defensive corps out there. Offensive Value for a Defenseman doesn't necessarily come from big shots, shattering hits and risky but perfect passes, but from driving possession by being as reliable as possible in your own end by limiting giveaways, winning pucks through positional play and distributing them to your teammates, often with very simple and not flashy at all passes. The more your team has the puck the more it will be able to score, it's pretty simple. Probably the bigger questions lie off the ice and to be completely honest, I really don't know yet how to approach and what to expect from my new stint in the VHL. I will try to be a reliable and consistent member and player who shows a good attitude and keeps an open mind, but I'm not sure yet how much time I will be able to devote to this league or how I will approach issues like Free Agency and so on. My last few players in other leagues have all been very loyal, often spending their entire career with the same franchise, so maybe I will want to change things up a bit this time around and be a bit more opportunistic while hunting cups and statlines. But as I said, none of this has been decided yet, so feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions, be it in the Press Conference I will open up shortly or via PM. I plan to be consistently active and reliable as I already mentioned but will I be able to earn the full 12 every season? Probably not, so if that means that I will drop a bit the Draft then that's fine. I've done the whole "Race for the top-pick" thing already so at this point just finding a team that is a good fit is more important to me than bragging rights. Well at least that's what I say now, maybe ask me about that again come Draft time and things might look very different . Words: 500
  17. Oh for sure, I'm not asking for an exception, just questioning the ruling in general. Some of the easy TPE-opportunities of today simple weren't available back then as far as I can tell. If we had reviews, press conferences and regular trivia back in the day then my and many other peoples players probably would have hit 800 or 900, maybe even over a 1000 TPE as well. That's the basis of my argument essentially, making it to 400 TPE forty seasons ago probably required the same amount of work if not more than getting to 700 does todayl I think I almost have my first media spot ready by the way once I put all my posts in here together
  18. Ouhhh I remember that guy!
  19. I would disagree on that one, from what I've heard TPE-inflation was a thing here just as it was in other leagues in the past and people have more TPE available to them than they did during my first go around, essentially making 700 the new 400. Wasn't that one of the main reason for the change anyway? Don't wanna complain too much about this, it's jutst kinda disheartening to see your old achievements invalidated, essentially being told that your old players sucked because people gain more TPE nowadays. In fact that systen change something that I already noticed a while ago when browsing the forums and it was one of the things that probably stopped me from returning earlier.
  20. Well that's mighty stupid. At leat it gives me a thing to complain about for my first article
  21. My players did meet the criteria under the old rules (when the treshold was 400) but not under the new rules (700) that the league changed to long after they retired. My two highest TPE players had 684 and 659 TPE so I'm wondering if they still count because I was able to use them for Pension before, under the old rules.
  22. Thanks for the nice welcome you guys So a few questions right off the bat: My last player only topped out a little over 400 TPE, does it make sense to claim any kind of carryover or other recreate benefits in that case or should I just start fresh? Also, I saw that the Welfare/Pension system was changed... My first two player gave me Pension credit under the old system but they fall just under the 700 TPE threshold in the new system. Was there any grandfathering when the system was changed or does that mean that I'm not eligible for any Pension anymore?
  23. I'm not sure if I can give you those teps to be honest, @der meister has literally been trying the same for years and I think he would be mad if you got them over him ? Oh and hi everyone I hope everything worked correctly with my player creation by the way, I got an error page after submitting the initial data but he seems to exist now. I hope I didn't skip any steps or something?
