Max von Hohenzollern Talks About His Season In Part One of this article we took a look back at the trade that brought Max von Hohenzollern to the Cologne Expres and asked him about his thoughts about his VHL-debut and the fact that it was with a completely different team than he would've thought a year ago. But now, let's dive into the season itself. How did it go for the young German and his new team? In a European Conference that was seen as the weaker one of the two this season, Cologne went on a tear right out of the gate and the Express started the year with an impressive winning streak despite the fact that they were considered an underdog team by most experts. The main reason for that impressive start was the strong play of their first line of Niels Skovgaard, John Sleeman and Max von Hohenzollern that had found chemistry surprisingly quickly. "I really felt at home here in Cologne from the moment I arrived and I got along great with everyone, but I sure didn't expect us to start as hot as we did. For some reason the chemistry between me, Niels and John was there right away", Max told us in an interview, "Those two are obviously much more experienced and skilled than I am which made it a lot easier for a rookie like myself, defenders focused on them a little more leaving me with some extra space on the ice, and luckily I was able to capitaliize on that a few times." While the Express cooled off a bit over the course of the season and dropped to second in the Conference, Hohenzollern did not. Along with his linemates he kept racking up the points and currently ranks 11th in league scoring with 49 goals and 40 assists in 65 games. He will likely fall just short of hitting the coveted 100-point mark, but it still looks like he has all but locked up the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy for Rookie of the Year. "This isn't about individual accolades but of course I am still happy and somewhat proud about how this season went. As a player who had to spent to extra seasons in juniors before being given a chance in the VHL, I sure didn't expect to start as hot as I did. But I'm also aware that a lot of this success comes from the fact that I have great teammates who drew a lot of the oppositions attention and thereby gave me opportunities to succeed. That probably won't be the case again in the future since I'm not an unknown commodity anymore. We also got to play against a lot of rebuilding teams in our conference and I expect that to change as well."

Max von Hohenzollern Reflects On Trade To describe this past year as "eventful" for Max von Hohenzollern would be quite the understatement. The young forward who has been nicknamed the "Prussian Prince" by the media has been on a rollercoaster ride of emotions ever since hitting the big leagues and it doesn't look like this will change anytime soon. Hohenzollern, a Seattle Bears draft choice, had spent two post-draft seasons in juniors to hone his skills and round out his game, but the VHLs 52nd season should be the one where he finally makes his debut in the big leagues. "You can imagine my surprise when I was called into the General Managers office shortly before the start of the season", Hohenzollern told the media in an interview a few weeks ago. "I was finally feeling ready to play in the VHL and give everything for the team that had put their trust in me by selecting me in the draft. When I was told that I would be traded it was quite the shock for me, for a second I felt betrayed but then I wondered if I was the problem, if I hadn't been doing enough to become the player that Seattle needed. The GM assured me that the trade was purely made to bring in an experienced, proven player in Joel Jarvi and that I had done nothing wrong, but you can't help but feel insecure and second-guess yourself in a situation like that." Luckily for Max, this feeling of uncertainty didn't last for too long as it quickly turned out that his new team could be an even better fit for him. Not only did he get to play for a team in his home country of Germany, the Cologne Express also were expected to field a very young roster with a not a lot of expectations, and therefore could afford to give von Hohenzollern a lot more playing time than he would have gotten in Seattle. "It actually turned out to be a real blessing in disguise for me", he told us. "Being closer to my family while also getting all the opportunities I need to prove myself on the ice, what more can you ask for as a rookie who is about to play his first season in the VHL? And it's not like I went to a bottom-feeder with no good veteran players either, guys like Niels Skovgaard, John Sleeman, Arcturus Mengsk and Dmitri Dadonov have helped me tremendously since I arrived here with both their experience and leadership in the locker room as well as their skills on the ice." Even though he didn't have a single VHL game under his belt, Max' new GM Greg Harbinson decided to put him on the team's top-line right away... And to find out how that turned out, stay tuned for part two of this article!
