Alex 3,137 Posted June 11, 2022 Share Posted June 11, 2022 @v.2 Hey everyone and welcome to the final segment of our ongoing Top 10 series. Today we’ll be looking at the top 10 VHL prospects. All of the players we’ll look at today were drafted in the season 83 entry draft and have spent the last season in the VHLE. In order to come up with the rankings, initial draft position, point production, and TPE were taken into account. 1 - Hammar Voss @BOOM Helsinki’s 6th overall pick, Hammar Voss is currently the highest TPE player in the VHLE at 575 TPE. This past season Voss was just below a point per game with 71 points in 72 games played. Voss was also a major factor in Bratislava’s postseason success as they were a point per game with 4 goals and 8 assists in 12 games played. Going forward Voss will be in Helsinki’s top 2 defensemen next season alongside Alessandro Nano. 2 - Jake Thunder @Thunder Jake Thunder took the VHLE by storm (pun intended) this season after being selected by Davos 19th overall in the VHL draft and as a result of their production Thunder quickly climbed the prospect rankings and should be taking home a lot of hardware this offseason. Thunder put up a ridiculous 22 goals and 67 assists for 89 points, the most of any defensemen and 2nd most in the league. Thunder also played well defensively with 197 hits and 216 shots blocked. Next season Thunder will be a prominent part of Davos’s defense core, and we should see a promising rookie season from this high flying defensemen. 3 - Siyan Yasilievich @badcolethetitan Possibly the most talked about prospect in the VHLE this season, Yasilievich was selected 4th overall by Davos in the VHL draft and went on to have a solid season in the VHLE with Istanbul. Yasilievich finished 3rd in the VHLE in assists with 64, and 5th in points by a defenseman with 75. In the playoffs Yasilievich’s play continued to be solid with 7 points in 7 games played for Istanbul. Next season we should see a remarkable rookie defense pair with Thunder and Yasilievich with Davos. 4 - Ryuji Sakamoto @der meister The 7th overall pick and the future face of Toronto, Ryuji Sakamoto had a nice season in Istanbul which saw them record 22 goals and 47 assists for 69 points. Sakamoto’s play defensively was also very impressive with 281 hits and 199 shots blocked this season. In the playoffs Sakamoto recorded 8 points in 7 games for Istanbul, they also had a ridiculous 37 hits in only 7 games, an average of 5.3 hits per game. Sakamoto will likely quickly find their way onto Toronto’s top defensive pair next season. 5 - Leandro Goncalves @leandrofg Our first forward on the list, Leandro Goncalves was selected 9th overall by Calgary in the season 83 VHL Draft. Similarly to Sakamoto, Goncalves also had a very nice season in the VHLE finishing with 29 goals and 40 assists for 69 points in 72 games played. Goncalves also racked up 162 hits which is pretty good for a forward. In the playoffs Goncalves played well with 4 goals and 4 assists in 9 games played for Vasteras. Next season Goncalves will be in Calgary’s top 6 and does this forward core ever have a bright future. 6 - Augustus Kennedy @InstantRockstar New York’s goaltender of the future, Augustus Kennedy was selected 10th overall and would go on to have an incredible season in the VHLE. Kennedy finished the season with a 20-25-7 record, tied for 1st in save percentage with a 0.934 SV%, and a GAA of 2.65. Next season Kennedy will step straight into the starting role in New York and will hope to have New York back in the playoffs for the first time since S78. 7 - Landon Wolanin @jacobcarson877 Our second Calgary prospect on the list, Landon Wolanin was selected 13th overall in the VHL draft. Wolanin had a solid season on a stacked Istanbul team in which we saw them record 24 goals and 31 assists for a total of 55 points. Wolanin also had an impressive +28 rating. Next season Wolanin will likely join Goncalves on Calgary’s second line next season as the team continues to improve. 8 - Brian Kowalski @Wheaties Another high scoring defensemen, Brian Kowalski was selected 16th overall in the season 83 VHL draft by the Vancouver Wolves. Kowalski was the face of Geneva last season, finishing with 26 goals, and 59 assists for a total of 85 points (3rd among defensemen). Next season Kowalski will step into some big shoes as they will become the face of Vancouver’s defense and be thrust into the spotlight. 9 - Ivan Retoslav @eagle_3450 The 12th overall pick of the London United had an up and down season in the VHLE. However, a hot streak near the end brought their season’s points total up in a hurry. Retoslav, finished the season with 23 goals and 37 assists for a pretty good 60 points, Retoslav also recorded 143 hits. In the playoffs Retoslav played great on both sides of the puck with 7 points, a +3, and 22 hits in 9 games. Next season we can look for Retoslav to make the jump to the VHL and slot in perfectly on London’s second line. 10 - Tomas Sogaard @Brandon The future is bright in Moscow although things may seem bleak right now, Tomas Sogaard is a sign of things to come. Moscow has at least 2 more runs left in the tank and Sogaard will play a big role in that. With that being said Sogaard did have a slightly disappointing season as they only recorded 21 goals and 21 assist for 42 points, It is important to add that Sogaard was well above a point per game while in the VHLM. Sogaard’s offense began to show in the playoffs as they were a point per game with 1 goal and 6 assists for 7 points in 7 games. Sogaard will be slotting into Moscow’s lineup next season and will be a welcome sight.
