Reviewing Riggers of The Past

There is little secret to the VHL’s success over the past 40 seasons in my opinion. The secret to success for the most successful player sim league ever has been consistent simming over the many years of our existence. Although I gave the simmers shit yesterday, I genuinely respect and love the work that they do for our league keeping it running on time. I also know how frustrating of a job it can be to do. I understand when people can’t do it every day and that’s why we’ve put in back-up simmers and a weekly updater. So my contribution to the historical media spot area for our Season 40 celebration will be an overview of the simmers of our past, two of whom you likely don’t know about.

Some historical sim league context needs to be laid down first. Before the VHL, sim leagues largely relied on simming games on the XBOX or Playstation with NHL ’07. The Victory Hockey League revolutionized the concept of player sim league with a quick and easy game log outputted by the Simon T Hockey Simulator. Suddenly the extremely tedious task of simming games was made into a 15 minute affair. Even still, this affair required a daily commitment from the simmer, which is not easy considering our age demographic at the time.

The Scotty Era

Scotty was the first ever simmer in the VHL or at least the first simmer of consequence. Scotty was the leader of the league and also happened to take extreme advantage of the fact that he was pulling in the most TPE during the early parts of the VHL when jobs were few and far between. Since the early days we’ve added a tonne of jobs, probably too many, but a tonne of jobs that have made parity a lot more realized. Scotty was an excellent commissioner; I’d recommend you go read his Hall of Fame builder article for more information on the man. He set the gold standard for simming in this league. Unfortunately we didn’t have our own server then (we had no money) so we had to upload all of our early games onto Webs.com which may have booted us after a long period of inactivity. I’m not sure if the early games can be recovered at this point. Scotty eventually became busier with life and decided to hand off simming duties slowly to myself. By the Season 14 playoffs Scotty essentially disappeared and I took up the duties (rigging a Continental Cup for New York).

The Sterling Era

My tenure started off rocky as the league was on the verge of collapse after Scotty’s disappearance. Things were in rough shape, activity was fairly low and people were pissed for good reason. David Knight, Slobo, Brooks and I carried the league out of the depths of death and got regular sims back on track. The league started to flourish again and I continued to rig games (winning the MVP a few times and another Continental Cup with my lousy player). I continued on with simming until the Season 22-23 era when I stepped down. Eventually my heavy rigging actually caught up with me (people were complaining about the virtual monopoly of talent held by David and the Toronto Legion who happened to have the simmer and lead commish on their roster). This time I reversed rigged and only gave the Legion one Cup victory. At this time, a young whippersnapper named Jardyb10 was blowing the league away with his style.

The Jardy Era

The era most people are familiar with is the current one where we’ve made things better for the simmer by adding in a lot of extra support. First, we increased the simmer’s pay to 6 TPE a week so he wouldn’t have to do a point task. We added a player updater for the sim engine and we also added some reliable back-up simmers (which is why I think Jardy has been so successful, aside from his amiable personality of course). Jardy took over in Season 23 and hasn’t looked back, except the few times I’ve stepped in for extended periods to sim for him when he’s been on a binge or farming/constructing shit highways in the motherland (I want to say Season 26 and 33 perhaps). Jardy’s been a very reliable simmer in the league and his efforts have very much been appreciated. Jardy keeps things fresh and easy because he has a very likable personality and he knows how to handle a joke. The job of simming is made a lot easier when you don't take criticisms seriously, which is difficult to do when you have the likes of Edward Eldred and Greg in your midst.

Conclusion

So yes I give people shit when the job isn’t been done. It’s not to get after you or make others feel bad, it’s just to continue things going. I’m not on a soap box or anything like that; I just care about the health of the league. I’ve tried to add in a lot of changes to make things simpler for our simmer because I know how difficult of a job it can be. Often the simmer gets no love for doing the most work. I can tell you I appreciate the efforts of Jardy and Higgins in keeping regular games on tap, because after all it is only the games being simmed that keep the VHL going.

Content: 3/3 It's pretty interesting to learn of simmer's past. Of course being the riggers era and that you are included is awesome. Wonder who will be the next person in line for that role.

Grammar: 2/2 I didn't see anything here
