Season 85 Calgary Wranglers Season Preview

An end of another off season and the start of a new. It's that time of the year again! It's time to discuss the season preview of Season 85. We have a first look at the Season 85 training camp roster of the Calgary Wranglers. A team on the rise, but also a team which have been effectively overlooked after a subpar Season 84.

First off, let's have a look at the team's forwards and offence. Coming back for Season 85 are veterans Daniel Janser @Daniel Janser, entering his 4th season with the Calgary Wranglers, and Saku Kotkakoivu @DollarAndADream , who would be entering his 5th season with the club. Also returning to the Calgary Wranglers are the seasoned vet Luc Tessier@KC15, and two young sophomores Leandro Goncalves @leandrofg and Landon Wolanin @jacobcarson877. Each returning for their second season with the Calgary Wranglers. Finally, the Calgary Wranglers add a new addition to the club, rookie center Sax Justice @Eso will take the reign of the final forward spot in the top 6 of the Calgary Wranglers.

On paper, the Calgary Wranglers have a very deep forward group, with Saku Kotkakoivu leading the way at 1253 TPA. Saku Kotkakoivu is a former Season 83 Mike Szatkowski, Scotty Campbell, and Dustin Funk Trophies winner, and will look to bounce back to his MVP form after a relative human and down to Earth Season 84.

Next up, we have Daniel Janser entering the season as the team's second 1k TPA forward, standing at 1025 TPA. Daniel Janser has been a point per game player for the Calgary Wranglers and is looking to have a career season as he is expecting to have a much bigger role with the Calgary Wranglers this season in Season 85.

Luc Tessier will look for one last push for a Cup as he enters his final season of his VHL career. A veteran entering Season 85 at 869 TPA (1186 TPE), Luc Tessier was a former 48 goal, 106 points superstar Center. However age has not been nice for the vet as we find a nominal statistics decline over each of the past 3 seasons since his career season in Season 81. Luc Tessier was 5th in team scoring for the Calgary Wranglers in Season 84, and was tied with Saku Kotkakoivu for the team lead in goals scored for the season.

Landon Wolanin, Calgary Wrangler's Season 83 13th overall selection, had a strong off season. After playing for Team USA at the World Cup of Hockey (S84), Landon has come out of the off season much stronger and appears ready to challenge in his sophomore season in the VHL. With 2 goals and 3 points in the World Cup playoffs, Landon Wolanin looks to bring his strong 778 TPA to good use for the Calgary Wranglers in Season 85. After a 23 goal, 45 point rookie season, Landon Wolanin looks to blossom as an offensive threat, being the only winger for the Calgary Wranglers.

Leandro Goncalves, the 9th overall selection of the Calgary Wrangelrs in Season 83, looks to follow up on a strong rookie season where he finished with 24 goals and 42 points. Leandro Goncalves, like Landon Wolanin, also had a strong off season of training and looks to bring a new, sharpen edge to his game in Season 85. Already at 767 TPA, with 83 and 85 Scoring and Defence respectively, Leandro Goncalves look to be a driving force on offense on the second line of the Calgary Wranglers.

Rookie Center Sax Justice looks forward to a strong rookie season. As an upcoming heavy slap shot sniper, Sax Justice will have a chance to play with the VHL elite forwards in Daniel Janser and Saku Kotkakoivu on the top line of the Calgary Wranglers. Sax Justice enters the season at 379 TPA and already has a respectable 74 and 71 Scoring and Defence respectively.

Next, let's have a look at the Calgary Wranglers' defence. The Wranglers' defence has taken a step back from Season 84 with the retirement of Asher Reinhart @rjfryman, who was a point per game defenseman and 4th in team scoring in Season 84. Superstar defenseman Erlantz Jokinen @jRuutu will return for his fourth season with the Calgary Wranglers (second consecutive after spending a season with the Helsinki Titans in Season 83). AirRig GoodBrandSun @Rhynex Entertainment will also return to the Calgary Wranglers for his 3rd season in his young VHL career. Exit is Scoish Velociraptor Maloish @youloser1337, who had a nice rookie season for the Wranglers in Season 84, and enter comes two new rookies, Marcel Janser @Morcar80, the younger brother of Calgary Wranglers' superstar forward Daniel Janser, and also recent VHL S85 draftee Phil Strasmore @Phil.

Erlantz Jokinen will once again be a strong presence for the Calgary Wranglers' backend. As a Top 5 defender in Season 84, and also second in team scoring for the Wranglers with 18 goals and 80 points in Season 84, the Calgary Wranglers will look for Erlantz Jokinen to have another spectacular season in Season 85 in order to stay competitive in the North American conference. Entering Season 85 as a 1101 TPA (1309 TPE) defenseman, Erlantz Jokinen remains a monsterous defensive force in the VHL.

AirRig GoodBrandSun will have to fill Asher Reinhart's big shoes in Season 85, and perhaps will have a bounce back season after a disastrous sophomore season in season 84. As a former Season 83 Jake Wylde Trophy winner as the Top Defensive Defenseman as a rookie in Season 83, AirRig GoodBrandSun took a step back with less ice time in Season 84. In hoping for a much better season in Season 85, the former 5th overall selection in the Season 83 VHL draft enters Season 85 at 790 TPA. AirRig GoodBrandSun will enter the season with a different makeup as previous seasons, while still a defensive juggernaut with 87 Defence, AirRig GoodBrandSun will be more agile than the previous two seasons. The Calgary Wranglers will need AirRig GoodBrandSun to return to his rookie, Defensive Defenseman of the Year form in order to be a dominate threat in the North American conference.

After spending 2 seasons in the VHLM and an additional 3 seasons developing in the VHLE, Marcel Janser will finally debut in the VHL for the Calgary Wranglers in Season 85. Entering the season at 459 TPA, Marcel Janser is a defensive defenseman with limited scoring touch (54 Scoring and 77 Defence), although had performed relatively well in the VHLE in each of the three seasons.  The Calgary Wranglers will need Marcel to play well defensively in order to succeed in Season 85.

Lastly, we have Phil Strasmore, the recent 3rd Overall Selection in the Season 85 VHL draft. As a Top 3 Pick, Phil Strasmore is given a chance to play for the Big Club right off the bat. Already at 337 TPA with 60 Scoring and 74 Defence, the Calgary Wranglers look for rapid improvements from Phil Strasmore throughout the season in Season 85. As long as Phil stay the course and play well defensively, the Calgary Wranglers will be able to stay competitive in the North American conference.

Finally, let's talk about the final line of defence of the Calgary Wranglers, the goaltenders. Ben Dahl @Ben, returns for his 3rd season with the Calgary Wranglers. In addition, the Wranglers also added a backup for Season 85, in Red Gaming @Lilpfigher.

Ben Dahl was the former Season 83 Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy winner, as the Rookie of the Year in Season 83. After a subpar and underwhelming Season 84, Ben Dahl looks to come back strong in Season 85. At 675 TPA heading into the season in Season 85, goaltending may once again be the weakest link for the Calgary Wranglers. The Wranglers will need Ben Dahl to return to the form where he won the Rookie of the Year if they wish to be dominant in the North American conference.

As added insurance, the Calgary Wranglers picked up Red Gaming for Season 85. Red Gaming enters the season as a sophomore with 439 TPA. Red Gaming had a fantastic playoffs statistics in Season 84 with the Chicago Phoenix, and looks to steal some games away from Ben Dahl in Season 85.

Overall, the Calgary Wranglers will enter Season 85 as one of the best up and coming young teams. The Calgary Wranglers have one of the best young offensive Top 6's in the VHL, and one of the deepest forwards core. With two 1k forwards along with basically three 800 forwards to fill out 5 of the top 6 positions, the Wranglers offense look to be quite potent, while being good at both ends of the ice.  Defensively, the Calgary Wranglers have a solid one-two punch in Erlantz Jokinen and AirRig GoodBrandSun, but having two rookies on the backend also puts a big question mark for the season. Finally, in the net, the Calgary Wranglers have an above average tandem. Who will take over the net for the season in Season 85 is still up in the air. Ben Dahl will likely start the season, but Red Gaming could very well take over the starting position if Ben falters. All in all, the Calgary Wranglers look to be a team that one cannot overlook and underestimate. The Calgary Wranglers could be a surprising team in Season 85, and may be considered as an underrated and dark horse of Season 85.
