Understanding Your VHL

Sesame Street Fainting GIF

There has been a lot of chatter in the weeks leading up to this writing about how the league’s moderation has been handled.  “Player X had one infraction, so they deserved this and not that!”  or “Player Y got this when Player Z got that!” have been constant themes and posts from VHL members.  Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion.  This article is a quick refresh on the standards the Victory Hockey League holds itself to, along with beneficial tools and reminders they may not be aware of.

About a year ago to date, the VHL’s Code of Conduct was developed in part to provide a common denominator with which all members could hold themselves accountable to.  This is a working set of standards that are applicable, but not limited to, the forum, discord, locker rooms and personal messaging.  This is a document that is being extensively followed across all these arenas.  You as a member agree to it when joining the league.

A main benefit of the Code of Conduct has been to ensure the inclusivity and comfort of an ever-growing member base that has a humongous breadth of combinations, including age, gender, location, education, career, and social characteristics. As we become more connected (and thus, closer) throughout the world, it is important to understand that what you feel and how you express it might not be viewed in the same light as another member.

Member discipline is an unfortunate, but necessary byproduct of creating the Code of Conduct.  Whether it is a single infraction or a series of events, member’s cases are rarely the same.  As a member, you have the right to appeal any punishment given to you.

There have been a few great tools that I believe have been underappreciated, or at least underutilized to date.  The foremost has been the Incident Form function, with which members can report violations of the Code of Conduct (but not exclusive) to the moderation team.  This tool has a few benefits, primarily to assist in reporting actions that the moderation team may not have had visibility to act upon.  It is also much easier to assess a report rather than heresy or personal messages since the entire moderation teams gets the reports.  These reports can be either addressed by a username or unanimous, and can certainly be submitted on behalf of another member.

What is largely missed within this Incident Form (albeit somewhat dated) is a particularly helpful document titled “Mod Team Informational Guide”.  This document presents a great snapshot of the lifespan not only a report, but how the commissioners and moderation team review a given member’s actions within the VHL.

Secondly, the ability to select your pronouns has been around for about a year, but perhaps has since been looked over.  This provides members to be identified and addressed however they feel most comfortable.  There are even options to have members ask you or pick multiple ones.  You can access these options on Discord.

Finally, an amazing function of such a successful league (12+ years strong) is providing members the audience to open up about their personal lives.  This is often a celebration amongst members, whether it is the birth of a family member, career promotion, or any other life event.  Less frequently, but equally important, is supporting members in their times of loss and struggle.  While emotional backing will always be welcome, keep in mind that as a community we are not professionals, and we should never take the place or position of specialists.

Dear VHL,

While @frescoelmo is a true veteran, don’t be fooled by this message!

IN MY OPINION… this is straight up propaganda and a PR stint by the Mod team to try and gain some favour.

Stand in the way of their control and fight back against this Mod team who uses reckless, proactive measures, against their members.

None of this media spot was written with the assistance of anyone other than myself.

And I would appreciate it if you didn't spam your banter in here.

No problem, just voicing my opinion.

Of note there is a forum version as well, though it is less robust.
