Your Best Roster

Kendrick

Recommended Posts

So in the spirit of creating discussion I figured I'd create this cool little thread. The purpose is to post your favourite teams roster consisting of only players it's had in the past 10 seasons (Let's say since the lockout). The player could've played for 1 game or they could have played for well over 600 games. However simply put the roster you feel is your favourite. It's a fun game and if you want even explain it. If you follow two teams, keep it short but try for the team you bleed for first.

Philadelphia Flyers:
Center: Peter Forsberg
Right Wing: Claude Giroux**
Left Wing: Simon Gagne
Defenseman: Chris Pronger
Defenseman: Kimmo Timonen
Goaltender: Steve Mason*

*Would have gone with Roman Checkmanek, but he just missed the 10 year cut.

** Giroux was originally a winger when he first broke into the league.

My "Following the rules" list:

Team Followed: PENS.
Center:Mario Lemieux
Right Wing:Mark Recchi
Left Wing:Bill Guerin (for the purposes of this, he can play opposite side)
Defenseman:Brooks Orpik
Defenseman:Sergei Gonchar
Goaltender:Ty Conklin (fuck Fleury)

HM: Dick Tarnstrom, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin (waaay too many centers as opposed to just about any other forward position, and Tarnstrom was great but for a defenseman he didn't play much defense *cough Mike Green cough*)

My "No one cares about 10 years" list (because these are the guys I grew up on and why I love hockey):

Team Followed: PENS.
Center:Ron Francis (only because Lemieux is already on the other list)
Right Wing:Joe Mullen
Left Wing:Luc Robitaille
Defenseman:Jim Paek
Defenseman:Darius Kasparaitis
Goaltender:Tom Barrasso

HM: Kevin Hatcher, Ulf Samuelsson Paul Coffey, Frank Pietrangelo, Ken Wregget, Kevin Stevens, Rick Tocchet, Troy Loney

All time full roster, comprised only of guys I've seen play (TV counts):

Joe Mullen - Mario Lemieux - Luc Robitaille

Kevin Stevens - Sidney Crosby - Mark Recchi

Petr Nedved - Ron Francis - Bill Guerin

Troy Loney - Evgeni Malkin - Rick Tocchet

Paul Coffey - Brooks Orpik

Sergei Gonchar - Darius Kasparaitis

Kevin Hatcher - Ulf Samuelsson

Tom Barrasso

Frank Pietrangelo

Scratches:

Jim Paek (because at least a small amount of realism: Paek was by far the worst of these defensemen)

Ed Olczyk

Ken Wregget.

One thing I'd like to add: the lack of Jagr was not an accident.

Toronto Maple Leafs

CenterMats Sundin

Right Wing: Phil Kessel

Left Wing: James Van Riemsdyk

Defense: Dion Phaneuf

Defense: Tomas Kaberle

GoalieEd Belfour

The thought of Sundin centering Kessel gives me wet dreams.

If I were to do it based solely on my favourite players, Belfour would be Bernier, Phaneuf would be Rielly.

Also because Jason inspired me, my favourite lineup of players growing up:

Center: Mats Sundin

Left Wing: Gary Roberts

Right Wing: Alex Mogilny

Defense: Wade Belak

Defense: Tomas Kaberle

Goalie: Curtis Motherfucking Joseph

Habs all time team of players I've seen play, note the wingers might be the wrong wings but idc

Head Coach: Michel Therrien.

pacioretty-plekanec-kovalev

ryder-koivu-cammalleri

galchenyuk-deshernais-zednik

gallagher-gomez-gionta

subban-markov

souray-briesbois

hamirlik-rivet

price

theodore

Choosing a coach was tough. Therrien (two stints his second tenure being the most successful for the team since the late 80's early 90's, also the first Habs coach I remember!), Julien (was a good coach, got way better when he left of course), Martin (great defensive mind, led an underdog team to the final four and shut down the top two players of this era), Carbo (mediocre coach, but he did lead the Habs to a first in the East finish, so there's that). Went with Therrien just because he has 2 stints and has the most successful tenure with his second. He'll go down as a top 5 coach for the habs imo.

It's crazy that despite ow horrible this team is in comparison to other teams, the Habs have been pretty competitive over these times. The oldest player on these teams is Kovalev (1994), and the longest Hab is Markov (1998). Markov started playing when Chucky was 4, for perspective of how long he's been on the dline, although he did spend time in the ahl I believe. Centres are especially weak, Gomez was an odd choice but his 2010 season was really good, so for his peak I chose him.

Since 2002, the Habs have made the conference final twice, the second round 5 times, and made the playoffs all but three years. Not too bad considering how poor this team looks compared to some above....

I cheer for the Oilers.  It's been possibly the worst team in NHL history over the stretch.  They can all go to hell.

Well, if you combined the good forwards they have now with the good defense they used to have when they had shit forwards it could be a decent team.

They did go to the finals less than 10 years ago.

You might as well just make a roster based on that 2006 playoff performance.

Horcoff - Pisani - Hemsky

Pronger - Bergeron

Roloson

Heatley - Spezza - Alfredsson

Karlsson - Redden

Anderson

HMs:

Hossa (it really sucks that Heatley hit such heights and that I liked Heatley then)

Vermette (I always liked him for some reason but he's nowhere near good enough)

Chara (interchangeable with Redden really but Redden was better as a Sen)

Emery (for the banter and 2007 run)

Volchenkov (shot blocking god. wtf happened to him)
