insane league suggestion (not for the faint of heart)

Implement some field/choice in player creation process so the human being, creating said player, can declare what NHLer or anime character or actor or animal or whatever to visually represent them in community graphics/media. Have it display on the forum thread that gets auto-created would be great, so it doesn't clutter up the portal pages and is more of a temporary thing when a player just starts their career.

 

Pros:

 

- Gives gfx members easier access to content/subjects they may never make a graphic for. Finding players to make sigs/graphics for is annoying. I don't want to post a 'signup if you want a sig made' thread or engage other members like some kind of vagrant bum begging for a crumb of graphic content. Going through the portal/forums to find which players are even active and could use a forum signature is hard enough.

 

- Maybe if a new player sees a satisfactory graphic made out of their player, it could possibly help retention in, likely, a miniscule way

 

- Makes the new person think the VHL is cooler/more advanced than it actually is during creation process, possibly helping retention, again, in some miniscule way



Cons:

- Too much work to implement and nobody even reads the forums on a computer, where you can see the forum signatures, so nobody even uses sigs anymore. 

- VHL gets sued for using someone who's famous' likeness in an official capacity

 

- New members use some real degenerate filth as their likeness, thus exposing the vhl graphics community to seeing unsavory internet content when they go to look for stock images.

 

 

 

 

Not expecting any type of immediate action or change from this suggestion/idea, just making it known on our beloved VHL forums.  Thank you for reading this suggestion.

I been saying this for years, and yes it is so annoying not knowing a persons render.  Please implement this for my sanity. Maybe now its posted by Gorlab that people will listen.

ISFL has now implemented a portal of their own and it contains an option to declare one's render. Obviously of no use to me, since I am an illiterate when it comes to gfx, but apparently a useful function for the many talented gfx wizards in our community...

ISFL also had a player likeness list

SHL has it in their portal

PBE keeps track of it

SSL renders can be set

 

And then the league where i need to make a graphic a week doesn't..

Yeah this is a thing in some other leagues. I don’t personally care who’s used as my render, but I’m aware that graphics people don’t tend to like that. Honestly, it might help a casual NHL fan like me pick up some names by just absorbing info from people’s profiles around the forum. 
 

I advocated for the “favorite NHL team” user flair (or whatever you want to call it) a while back and I don’t see why this would be any worse of an idea.

Hmmm.. tbh, I like being able to choose a render that would be in the jersey colors of their VHL team.. ie: NY American players I can easily use Rangers players for renders..

 

I see what you’re saying, but also I remember when McDavid was drafted everyone wanted to use him - how would we decided who gets the more popular player?

Whoever wants it, we might have 10 people looking like him then, but we also have 10 red panda's by now with lemorse buying every charity auction for render choices.
Can always adjust it whenever you want (in case of your changing teams issue)

oh so if multiple people can have the same render then what’s the point? I mean, sure then just let everyone upload their preferred render..

 

When I was doing the Player Cards + Signatures for New Creates that hit a certain TPE, I had the template they needed to fill out have their player number and render.. pretty much the same thing. This could be an easy add for their Portal Profile, no?

Exactly the point we are trying to get across, its not an addition that would be hard to implement, and would help graphic makers immensely, by being able to create signatures that actually resemble the player they are for. Instead of randomly selecting McDavid for instance, only to find out the person we make it for hates his guts

This would be helpful enough, but personally, I will never be upset or offended if someone makes a graphic for my player without finding out what player render I prefer.  If anyone puts up a fuss about receiving a graphic of their player with the "incorrect" render I'd likely not make a graphic for that person's player anyways.

 

A nice, extra bit of info, but is absolutely unnecessary.

YES!  This would be a big help to graphics people.

Definitely in support of this. Doesn't mean that player has to be used for everything but it can be pretty helpful for GFX people. I generally just use players in the same position that kinda match the team jersey-wise, but I can do a JC and it's nice to know which player the member prefers.

On that subject, it'd be nice to have player numbers as part of the portal pages too - can understand why it wasn't included since it doesn't change anything for the sim but it's nice to have as a little bit of flavor.
