Last week this old man of the VHL complained about there not being jersey retirements anymore. I have decided to continue my tirade against things having changed and hopefully make a weekly Srticle out of it. Let’s call it, “Make the VHL great again”... except not really because that would make me hate myself.

Anyway, this week I direct my question to the GFX community, and openly admit I’m part of the problem. As you’ve surely noticed, the VHL has 2 GFX forums. 1 for PT’s, and 1 for comments. This is because, back in olden times, almost every graphic that was made on the site was posted asking for “CnC” which means “comments and critiques.” Doing so allowed us to get opinions on our work and improve it which it greatly did if I’m being honest. Some of the best graphics to come out of the VHL happened between seasons 20 and 50.

So what happened? If I were to make a guess, the main issue was the auto-6 rule came in. Don’t get me wrong, I agree we should have that rule. However before it existed a PT wasn’t automatically worth 6, it was graded so if it was bad you’d only get maybe 3 or 4 TPE for that PT. This means you wanted to make certain it was ready before you posted it which often meant asking for CnC beforehand sonyou could improve it. This creates good conversation as well as made us a better GFX community.

So, the task I set forth this week is for the GFX community: Ask for comments, respect critiques, and improve. Reviews are fine but they are very much a 1 way street and don’t always happen in much of a timely fashion. You don’t necessarily need to put the advice given into the piece in question but remember it and use it for later. Together let’s make our graphics shine again shall we? I will do my part. Anyone who posts a graphic (and please note This is where you want to post) and wants me to give them some advice, just tag me. I will do my best to respond to everything.

I owe all of my graphic abilities to the CnC and formerly harsh grading system of the VHL, and with that I've come much, much farther than I ever expected to when I first started. If people post in the graphics section I'll do my best to give good CnC on their graphics.

Yeah, I'd argue that nearly all of the VHL's great graphic makers of old got to their highest points in large part due to CnC. A lot of us grew as GFX guys together, and bounced ideas off each other, asked how to do things...Hell, last week someone asked me for a PSD and it reminded me of how often I used to pore through brooks' psds to see how he got his sigs to look so good.

I think auto-6 is a huge part of it, as getting 5/6 on gfx was not uncommon, and we all tried pretty hard to get that full 6. Hell, I used to get pissed when I'd get 5.5s, even though they rounded up lol

Guess I never would've gotten a 6/6 considering, I did all my gfx here free hand on a phone with a stylus and no use of PS/Gimp just photo editing apps from the play store. I couldn't compete and with no one reviewing my shit, I gave up.

I can relate to getting pissed about 5.5, that used to be me with media. I remember back when they used to want a ton of pictures, different colors in the font, etc, and I argued that posting an article with a more professional look should be accepted just as readily.
