Advantage 2,891 Posted March 25, 2014 Share Posted March 25, 2014 The Victory Hockey League is used to having one defender dominate an era on a consistent basis, especially after the careers of Ryan Sullivan (3 Labatte's, 2 Beketov's) and Daniel Braxton (4 Labatte's, 2 Slobodzian's). Many thought we were entering a time with a lot of great defenders battling it out and in general, a little more parity when it came to defensive dominance. However, it seems that once again one individual is taking over the era on the back-end. Last year, Conner Low became the first ever rookie defenseman to win the Sterling Labatte Trophy. On top of that he also won the Christian Stolzschweiger Trophy for Top Rookie and the Grimm Jonsson Trophy for the Top Leader. It isn't usual to see player's taking home three or more awards, and even more incredible when you consider that he is a freshman in the Victory Hockey League. As people called it just a fortunate situation and a bit of a fluke, no one really gave him a chance to repeat as the Top Defender. However, once again Conner Low finds himself in a familiar situation. With 42 points in 28 games, Low finds himself at the top of the league for points by defensemen. In addition, Low is also tied for second in the entire league in points! However, what separates Conner from other players is that he has a sound defensive and physical game as well. Low is currently fourth in the league in hits (116) and sixth in shot blocks (61). What these numbers symbolize is that Conner Low is once again the leading candidate to win the Sterling Labatte Trophy. He is even tied for first in the league in assists and with those defensive numbers and the way New York has played this season, perhaps Conner Low deserves to win a MVP trophy while he is at it. Over hyped? Maybe. But you can't over hype stats. It was a tough voting last season but Low belonged on the ballot, ergo it wasn't a slight that he won. He had the stats to justify a win. But not a dominating win. And it wasn't that. But saying he is over hyped this season is laughable. His results in the sim speak for themselves.
