Why Vancouver reminds me of my Davos team

As Vancouver makes a quick start to S69, I was looking over their roster and saw some parallels in how the Wolves roster has evolved since their S67 cup and my old Davos team in S36-S38.

For a little back story, in S36 a young Davos team I had GMed for just 3 seasons had a surprisingly good regular season and ultimately won the Continental Cup. It was a team made up of sophomores for the most part but the catalyst for the cup run was the free agent signing of future Hall of Famer Odin Tordahl and a trade for reigning top rookie Davey Jones.

Then in the off-season we lost Tordahl (effectively to free agency but I managed to get a pick back from New York before he signed there). I also knew our top line center Sergey Brovalenko was considering retirement, so decided to use that pick to acquire a third center in Naomi Young. The team was still strong but the loss of forward quality told, both the absence of Tordahl and the fact one of Brovalenko, Jones, and Young was playing out of position. We were ultimately swept by Remy LeBeau and the Legion in the finals.

So what's the parallel? Well the Vancouver team in S67 was also very young, largely acquired in the S66 and S67 drafts. Two key veteran players, Beau Louth and Shawn Glade, were lost to retirement and trade after S67, meaning like S37 Davos, S68 Vancouver wasn't as strong as the previous season's edition. But now, after trading the third star of S67 in Rauno Palo, the Wolves have developed further, most of those rookies and sophomores are in their prime and they are ready to pounce and win a second championship in S69, just like we did in S38.

2 cups in 3 seasons is actually more rare than back-to-back cups, because it generally requires a slight reshuffle in between without losing what made you good. If Vancouver pulls it off, they'll be among the all-time greats.

but did you play your backup goalie the proper amount of games in Davos?

In those spoiled days Jardy did it for us all.
