    Childhood / Growing Up

Jordan Daniel Maverick was born on April 14th, 1997 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to his parents Ronald and Patricia. He was the youngest of 3 siblings. He had two brothers, Nick and Steven, and sister, Allison. Jordan was raised in Minneapolis, a city and state known for its love of hockey. His whole family loved hockey. Jordan’s dad played throughout high-school and college, his brothers grew up playing it, and even his sister dabbled in a league with both boys and girls. Jordan was able to skate about the same time he was able to walk. A precise and hard-working player, Jordan was just 2 years old when he first started skating. Both of his older brothers played in the Minnesota Junior Hockey Association and Jordan joined them at the age of five. He began his journey to hockey stardom at about the time he was able to tie his own skate laces. The young Maverick spent countless hours on the ice, honing his talents as a skater, shooter and passer. As a result, he often played in leagues that catered to older boys. The age and size differences between him and his competition mattered little. Both his father and brothers helped develop Jordan’s skills both at home and at the rink. It was there, that Maverick learned the fundamentals of skating, stick handling and the concept of the game. He was soon outplaying both of his brothers and every other kid out on the ice, regardless of age or size. His skills improved as he got older, as did his dedication and passion. The team that Maverick played on at age seven was otherwise composed of ten-year-olds. His first coach remarked that he handled the puck better than the ten-year-olds.

Maverick’s skills flourished, and so did his size. At the age of 8 he was taller and generally bigger than most of the older players on the ice. Even though, he wasn’t necessarily supposed to, Maverick was prone to laying out opposing players on the boards and on open ice. He was a lucky kid and led a fun-filled home life. Both of his parents were very involved with doing well in not only hockey, but in school and helping him grow as a person as well. They often had family game night, home-cooked meals, movie nights, went to sports events together, etc. His parents raised him to have manners, to be polite and to be an authentically good person. This carried over and stuck with him into his preteen/teenage years. There wasn’t a person that could honestly say that they disliked Jordan. He talked to everyone with respect and was generally a well-liked kid!

He became a huge fan of the Minnesota Wild, and forward Mikko Koivu. His love for hockey was apparent and only grew stronger over time! He was an excellent high school hockey player as well. Proving to be the best on his team and eventually he joined the Greater Minneapolis Hockey League (GMHL). He continued to play minor hockey in high school and the GMHL, where he caught the attention of OHL scouts in 2011.

Ontario Hockey League/ U.S. National Team Development Program

In June 2012, Jordan Maverick was drafted in the fifth round, 89th overall by the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection. A London Knight for just one season in the OHL, Jordan Maverick began his major junior career with 72 points, receiving the Emms Family Award as the League's top rookie. However, Jordan’s family did heavily stress for him to have an education for him to fall back on. Jordan agreed with their sentiment. So, despite a very successful start to his career, Maverick decided to play in the U.S. National Team Development Program (USNTDP) because of its close proximity to his Minneapolis home. This allowed Maverick to continue his high school education without leaving his hometown. He entered the USNTDP for the 2013-2014 season. Over his two seasons with the USNTDP, Maverick recorded 103 points in 131 games. Jordan also had success at Central Hall High School in Minnesota, where as a junior, he helped lead his team to the school's first state hockey championship. The following season, he was awarded the Minnesota Mr. Hockey award, which is given annually to the top senior high school hockey player in the state.

    The Decision

Jordan was an obviously highly regarded hockey player in the state and across the nation as well. There came a point in his life where he and his family had to decide what the best route would be for him, and if he was able to make into a career. Both of his brothers were both at Minnesota University and his sister was at a local community college. It was always assumed that Jordan would follow in his brothers’ footsteps, but it was necessarily his plan. After consulting his parents and taking their advice, Maverick elected to submit himself to the VHLM Entry Draft. It was a great choice for him, as the Bern Royals elected to take a chance on him with the 4th overall pick in the draft. Bern had watched him play a lot and saw what he brought to the table. They admired the size along with goal-scoring and checking ability. The one pitfall for Jordan of course was leaving Minnesota to follow his dream of playing professional hockey. Switzerland is quite a ways from Minnesota, but Jordan has dedicated himself to staying in contact with both of his parents, and his siblings as well.

    Summary

Jordan Maverick had a great childhood and was raised the right way in an ideal family environment. His hockey skills flourished at a young age and he continued to work hard and improve with the support of his coaches, family, scouts and on-lookers. He elevates the attitudes of people around him both on and off the rink, and should be a name people come to recognize in the not-so-distant future!

    Rookie Profile – Jordan Maverick

    Name: Jordan Maverick
    Position: Left Wing
    Age: 18
    Height: 6’4”
    Weight: 213
    Handedness: Left
    Hometown: Minneapolis, MN
    NHL Comparison: Rick Nash
    Team: Bern Royals

    Player Strengths:

Skating: Jordan Maverick is a solid skater across the board. He’s a big-bodied guy at 6’4, 231 pounds and he protects the puck well using his big frame. He can see the ice and barrels through everyone. He always has head up and is looking for the right play. Jordan is fluid and seems to skate with ease. He is able to pick up speed and change direction fairly quickly for a big guy. Even with his physicality, he also never seems to be down on the ice and has an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time. His work along the boards is formidable and he provides a strong net presence.

Scoring: As a power forward, most expect Jordan to help create lanes and bring a physical presence to the ice. He can do all of these, but he also brings the ability to score when called upon. He has a hard shot which he can release very quickly and is dangerous shooting off the rush and on one timers. You will also find Maverick in front of the net creating a screen or ready for a tip, deflection or rebound goal.  He tends to generate scoring chances through his hard work. Maverick may not lead the team in scoring, but it is still definitely a strength when a power forward can bring some high-end goal scoring ability!

Puck Handling: It isn’t often you see a 6’4″ left winger with the skill that Jordan Maverick possesses. He can play the game as a power forward, but also has nifty stickwork, patience, and grit that make him a strong two-way player. Lawson shields the puck easily and uses his body to his advantage often outworking opponents to break into the offensive zone and creating chances. It seems impossible to separate him from the puck and he is consistently successful picking up loose pucks. He is often able to edge out opponents using his speed, size and strong puck handling ability.

    Player Weaknesses:

Passing: While Jordan Maverick has great scoring ability, his passing is a slight afterthought that could use some attention moving forward. He was used to carrying the offense the last season, in which he was used mainly to put shots on goal. He sees the ice well and can recognize the play, but will too often look shoot first or second-guess himself before attempting to make the play. It may be more of a mental thing at this point in time, but it does seem like something that could be improved. Maverick doesn’t lack the ability or stick handling skills, so look for this to be something as a point of concentration. However, Maverick will always lean towards shooting and scoring over making a pass.

Fighting: Obviously by now you know Jordan Maverick style of play, size and strengths. So the fact that he isn’t a top-tier fighter is a tad off-putting. While he has no problem crushing players into the boards or landing a devastating open-ice hit… he won’t drop the gloves very often. When he does, it isn’t anything special. You would hope that a guy that towers over players would be able to throw some better punches and protect his teammates, but it’s understood that Jordan has been quoted saying “I can’t score if I’m sitting in the box all night.” So, at least there’s some reasoning behind it!

Penalty Shots/Breakaways: Maverick scores most of his goals in a gritty style. Working hard to find open space, working in front of the net, etc. He is great at scoring this way! However, if you give him too much room, he seems to almost psych himself out. It is odd I will say, but he is more of a natural reaction player, rather than a pure goal scorer. He isn’t going to go out there and dangle a goalie or slide the puck between his legs or try a spin-a-rama. If Jordan Maverick is taking a penalty shot, he is more likely to skate 10 ft, wind up and rip a clapper at the goalie. This is okay, but you’re a head coach, Maverick more than likely won’t be on the first few players you send out to win the game in a shootout.

Dmoushey_31 got a reaction from Kendrick in Maverick Goes 4th Overall
Jordan Maverick came into the league late last season and proved he belonged. There were rumors he could go as high as the #2 pick, but also that it was defintely possible that he ended up a 2nd/3rd round pick. Obviously, he was unsure where he would end up!

Maverick anxiously waited to hear his name announced for the S45 VHLM Entry Draft. The team he had played with through the end of S44, Bern Royals, had 3 out of the first 4 picks. After the first 3 picks were announced, Maverick still had hopes that he could end back in the locker room he became adjusted to.

"With the 4th overall pick in the S45 VHLM Draft, the Bern Royals select... left winger, Jordan Maverick!"

Relieved and happy, Maverick walked across the stage to reclaim the jersey he had played in last season. After shaking hands and a few photos, Jordan was available for a quick interview:

-How does it feel to be a 1st round pick?
"It feels awesome! Really excited to have been taken so high in the draft. I'm looking forward to proving myself worthy of this selection."

-You're heading back to Bern where you played last season, they must have thought highly of your perfromance.
"I couldnt be any happier than to go back to the place that took a chance on me from the get-go. The entire team helped me develop as a player. There were a lot of stressful times with how the season went... but this season should be quite a bit different"

-Some high-quality players were taken by Bern in the draft. How competitive will the team be this season?
"Well, honestly we could'nt be any less competitive than how we were last season. Our locker room is buzzing and we have a team that really wants to push for a Championship. The energy around the team is completely different than it was last season, and with the guys we have now, I think there's a real chance we will suprise some people!"

-Thank you for your time Jordan and congratulations on being the 4th overall pick!
    "Thank you!"

As someone who just joined the league, I don't see why there are so many juniors teams. A couple teams have a good bounty of actives, while a couple only have 2-4 active players. There are a few immediate negatives right away:
    1. Competition. There was a game in which my team was outshot 4 to 55. Seriously? Is that fun for either team? I know it wasn't for me... And as a new member, not very enticing.

    2. Locker rooms. STZ is a great LR presence for Bern, but 3 people (that are getting blown out every game) can only carry a conversation so far.

    3. Motivation. Honestly if I wasn't a part of other sim leagues and know how they work, I would've quit already.

My suggestion is a reduction in teams from 8 to 6 and a redistribution draft.
This will help by even out the playing field and creating more parity in the league (competition). This will also make for more active locker rooms. It may make for a longer off-season, but put every send down, every new member and anyone else that will playing in the VHLM this season and do a fantasy draft. It will refresh the Jr teams and bring the playing field back to even. You could eliminate Moscow (with the GM stepping down already) and 1 other team.

This is just an honest suggestion from a recently joined member!
