JohnnyT_77 got a reaction from Quik in Helsinki prospect Fitzgerald finding his game
As the previous VHLM season came to a close, Toby Fitzgerald’s future was not as clear cut as he had wanted things to be. He wasn’t sure if his career would crash and burn, or if he thought he could rebound from what he calls, “a disappointing year”.

After being on one of the best teams in the league – Halifax 21sts, and being paired with defenseman Shawn Glade, while the team prospered as one of the best around, Fitzgerald was not happy with his play in his very first year in the league. He signed with Halifax a bit late and thus he felt a little bit behind the 8-ball. And it showed on the ice.

“Coming in so late I felt kind of hurt my initial season production”, said Fitzgerald. “I guess I was able to still make an okay season out of it, but I know I can do better”. He wasn’t sure he would find a home in his second season as he was on a tryout 1-year deal with Halifax. “I simply didn’t know if my performance on the ice would have been noticed at all or if I would just have had the single year and be done.” Luckily, that was not the case.

In the ensuing off-season, a very surprised Fitzgerald was being looked at by a couple teams prior to the draft, where he was ultimately selected by the Helsinki Titans. “To be honest, I was surprised anyone selected me with the lackluster season I put up. Apparently, it was enough to get noticed. I’m happy to have been selected. I guess we’ll see where this goes.”

Fitzgerald was offered the option to play with the big club at the time, but wanted to see if he could find a VHLM team to play with to work a bit more on his development. He wound up signing another 1 year deal - this time with the Saskatoon Wild, who are currently in a dogfight for the top spot as the season winds down. His decision to stay in the VHLM also seems to have been a good one as the young defenseman is finding his niche as one of the better all-around defenseman.

“Even though I’m glad I finally found my game this season, I need to continue to take pride in being a two way player. It’s something I’ve always strived for. Contributing offensively is great, but I’d much rather be someone who is not a liability to my team by focusing on becoming a defense first type of defenseman.”

And Fitzgerald is doing a fine job in both regards on a team that is loaded with stellar blueliners. While he is 4th on the team in scoring with a 15-60-75 stat line as this season is almost complete, he brings a ton of other intangibles that many people can easily overlook what he brings to the table. First off, he sports a +23 +\- which leads all defenseman on Saskatoon that speaks to his awareness and smart play on the ice. Fitzgerald also leads his team in hits with 198 and 116 blocked shots. The last thing to mention in this, is that he also has a bit of a nasty edge to his game as he leads his team with 100 PIM.

“I’ve always like mixing things up a bit,” said Fitzgerald, chuckling. “We can’t have guys thinking they can take liberties with some of our superstar players. So, I like bringing that physicality to my game when it’s needed. I have a very old school hockey mentality which I feel today’s game is missing but is required.”

While Fitzgerald says he’s excited at the prospect of playing for Helsinki next season, he says he’s focused on finishing the year with Saskatoon and hopefully, bring home a cup before graduating to the VHL.

“Last year was a real disappointment with that team in Halifax. We had a rough go in the playoffs. But I feel we have a better team in Saskatoon this season. Just hoping this year turns out better with the Wild. We’ll find out soon enough.”

Either way, if things continue to improve for this young defenseman, you're about to see a very successful career just about to get started.

    2. Being a defenseman myself, it would be nice to see a fellow D man take the honours of MVP. Right now, I'd give it to Dylan Nguyen. He's had a great tournament thus far and is one of the top point getters.

    3. I think it's great. From what I've seen it's a very well deserved move that's certainly in the best interest of the league moving forward. He's a great leader. I'm sure he'll do a bang up job. So, congratulations to Quik!!

    5. Yes and no. I mean, for the country itself, it's a tradition. But are they crazy over the holiday itself? Or perhaps is it more the time off of work and those notorious black Friday deals? I can't tell anymore. I honestly feel the meaning of many holidays has been lost over the years. Not many people reflect on the meaning behind many of these things I find. However, there's always NFL football too, which is a great annual tradition, but I believe it's lost it's special place due to the them now having Thursday night games on a regular basis.

    1. They seem like moves that will help the club in the long run. Let's be honest... that's what every GM looks for when making deals. Make deals in the best interest of their club. Hopefully, in our case, it's a bit of quality over quantity after everything shakes out. Of course it's a risk. Moving draft picks always carries a risk - especially a top pick. But I've always been a believer that with big risk, can come even bigger reward. You win some, you lose some, right? Some things end up working out, while others may not. That's just the way it is. And if things don't work out the way you had planned, you could always trade for another top pick in return to minimize your loss.

2a. The first impression I had of this franchise happened even before joining it - and came away very impressed. Senior executives came out to visit twice, asked a bunch of questions, and showed a lot of interest in me as a player. That went a long way with me. And because of that, I'm very happy that they followed through with their draft plan to select me. Hope I can help bring them a championship in the future.

    4. Personal goals for the upcoming season is to simply continue my path of development and try to prepare for the VHL the best I can. I know I"m a bit rough around the edges right now, but I always remind myself that Rome wasn't built in a day. But I do know that hard work, determination, and consistency in my training will help me become a better player down the road.

    Seeing the Potential
When blue-collared factory worker Tom Fitzgerald came home each night, there was nothing better than arriving to see his five children – with a 9 year gap from oldest to youngest - outside playing around in the yard. Actually playing. Getting along and avoid fighting for a few hours. Of course, they all played the usual kids games when they were outside, but nothing made Tom happier to see when his kids were playing sports when he’d get home. Baseball, football, basketball, golf – it didn’t matter. He was happy to see that his boys embraced sports as much as he did.

All the boys seemed to have picked up on sports pretty quickly no matter what it was they were playing. Part of this was due to their father’s love of sports, which translated over to them by watching professional games on TV or live with their dad, as well as them always asking questions pertaining to the rules of whatever sport it was they were watching. It was almost religious in the Fitzgerald house to watch sports. However, there was one day returning from work when old Tom noticed something different with his kids.

One evening when Tom was returning from work, as he pulled up in the driveway, the boys were all playing football with some of the neighborhood kids. The sun glaring in his eyes as he watched a play unfold. One of the kids was running to the outside with the ball, the defenders in pursuit of the ball carrier. A spin back towards the inside. A headfake right, quick juke left, another spin out of the grasp of another defender, and then outran the last two defenders for a touchdown. Tom giggled to himself as he liked the moves he saw. But as he walked towards the kid to give him some props, he soon realized who that kid was with all the quickness and great moves. It happened to be his youngest son, Toby. Even more unbelievable, was that this was all done by a 5 year old. Outperforming the other kids… twice his age.

It was at that moment Tom knew he had something special in Toby. It was time to get this kid in sports to see what he can do.

    A Jack of All Trades
Toby began playing youth sports of all kinds shortly after that moment, starting with baseball. Right from day one, he was a natural. Could it be possible for him to be a 5 tool athlete so soon? Tom wasn’t sure, but it sure was looking that way. He could hit, showed pop, field, run well, and throw.

In the fall, he played tackle football. And just like on that front lawn the year prior, Toby was a menace on the field against kids his own age. Quickness, speed, power and amazing vision for a runner of his age. He helped carry his team to an undefeated record in the region.

A similar thing happened when he played basketball in the winter. This kid dominated no matter where he played, or what he played. After his first year, it was clear to see this kid seemed light years ahead of other kids his age.

    Advanced Skillset
At the age of 10, Toby seemed so advanced that things were becoming unfair for the other players in his age group. People began to notice this phenom developing right in front of them. Although, it was at this time, he started moving away from some of the other sports, and really began focusing on baseball.

He was soon approached by the provincial U14 baseball team. Once he joined, he was a star from the beginning, displaying some little league power, hitting a ton, and playing as one of the best young Shortstops many scouts haven’t seen since a young Derek Jeter. He wound up leading the U14 baseball team to three national championships in the three years he played.

At age 13, he moved up to the U16 provincial team displaying the same skills that he had used to dominate the age group below. He played two years with this team, once again leading them to two national championships. Unfortunately, the love he had for this game, began to drift. His heart wasn’t in it. He started looking for other challenges.

    Desire for Physicality
It wasn’t until he was 16 that Toby decided he had enough of baseball. He wanted something new. He was looking for a different experience. He missed the physicality of football, but his local school didn’t have a team. He had to look for another outlet to showcase his talents. They did however, have another type of team that he didn’t even know existed.

After one of the high school rallys, there was a game being played on the field that he walked down to check out with a few of his friends. Surprisingly, this was a game he had never seen before.
It was quick. Fast. Aggressive. And of course, physical. He had come to find out that it was the old native game of Lacrosse. And he wanted to play it immediately.

Toby had joined the school team the following week and got right in there. His stick skills were a bit lacking at first, but in no time, he had picked it up like an old pro. They popped him in at defense which he loved from all the hitting down low that was needed. Toby simply fell in love with the game at this point. And he was a force to be reckoned with on that turf.

    Hitting the Ice
Shortly after completing his first Lacrosse season, Toby was introduced to ice hockey by a fellow teammate. Knowing how much he loved Lacrosse, hockey was described to him as a much faster version of lacrosse – only it’s played on ice. This intrigued Toby to no end and he couldn’t wait to try it out.

Once on the ice, as with lacrosse, it took him some time to get used to skating, stickhandling, shooting and passing, but just as it was with everything else, he picked it up no problem. In a matter of months, Toby was excelling at hockey. He joined some local recreation leagues for his first year, got his bearings, worked on improving everything about his game and eventually decided he would give some competitive leagues a try.

He was a natural defenseman and leader from his playing days in lacrosse. Rarely out of position, he offered his team a solid player on the blue line. He had some grit too. He was simply a tough customer to deal with in front of the net for the forwards. It didn’t take much time for players in the league to recognize that this dude meant business.

Toby became an intimidating force and guys simply did not want to face him anymore. It gave him a bit more space too. When that started to happen, he began showing a bit more offensive prowess to his game by jumping up on the play some more. He also started to use that vision he had from the days of football to become a great passer too.

He wound up finishing his first season in a competitive setting putting up 3-21-24 with 150 PIM and sporting a respectable +23 in 70 games at defense. The following year he joined the QMJHL Quebec Remparts and posted a 21-68-89 in 67 games from the blue line and added 7-19-26 in 20 playoff games.

Scouts took notice from all over the globe. NHL, KHL and the growing VHL. It was the VHL that Toby decided to continue that path of dominance. He was eventually drafted and signed by the VHLM Halifax 21st where he looks to begin and carve out a solid and respectable professional career.

It may not be what he decides to stick with, but whatever it is that he chooses, the sky is more certainly the limit for him.

    2. The coaches in Halifax have been great. When I came aboard they promised me the playing time I've been given. I've been very happy with how everything is playing out both for my own career and the results we have been generating in Halifax.

    4. Being paired with Shawn Glade has been a dream, really. It's like having Bobby Orr as your linemate. This being my first year in the league, I think he compliments my game very well. Not only that, I feel it's been a big help in the learning process and is a great experience to my development.

    5. Answering "defense" is a cop out on this question. So I'll think outside the box on this one and say I think one of the most important skills to have is anticipation. If you can anticipate what your opponent can do and get in position and anticipate what they are going to do, you create so many more opportunities like turnovers, disrupt the rush of the offense, and potentially create more offensive chances.

Place of Birth: Halifax, NS, CAN
    Ht: 6’4” Wt: 225 lbs

    Position: D

    Quick Hits

Fitzgerald’s claim to success so far in his young career, is being a two-way defenceman. With a defensive-first mentality, you wouldn’t normally see things that his stat line shows. Let’s face it, these are numbers you’d normally see from a purely offensive defenseman. So, if you’re concerned about offense, there’s no need to be. Take a look at his numbers last season. He posted a 21-68-89 in 67 games from the blue line and added 7-19-26 in 20 playoff games. He was just outstanding.

After seeing that are you worried about a one dimensional, offense only player? Fitzgerald is nothing of the sort. Not only is he a monster offensively, he brings it defensively too. His +\- his last 3 seasons have only improved (+23, +43, +67), and he isn't afraid to block shots or throw a hit. That, combined with the offense he brings to the table, makes him quite possibly one of the best two-way defencemen available in this draft. Not to mention, he plays with a bit of an edge and will mix things up if required. He had 194 PIM in addition to his outstanding offensive performance.

    What's this all mean?
Teams don’t want to miss out on this top talent as he gives them a chance to bring in a winner, a leader and someone who can help in so many ways.

To elaborate further, we have someone who plays the game the right way and is solid at just about everything he does. He can play both special teams units including power-play quarterback. He uses his deadly accurate shot and pinpoint passing to create scoring chances. But what makes him great is that he’s almost never out of position. He has no issue playing man-to-man in his own end and usually comes out on top.

If there’s questions about him though, it is mostly having to do with his skating ability, as it may not be the greatest. Scouts would like to see an extra gear in his skating. However, he skates fine and isn’t a true liability. But he is missing that top-gear and could lose races to pucks against speedy wingers. Look for him to refine this part of the game. Other than that, there isn’t much downside to this player.

    What the Scouts think
“A talented two-way defenceman that can play in all situations and stay productive. Uses his edges well and is, for the most part, a very smooth skater; however, as he gets stronger and adjusts to a more up-tempo style of hockey, he will need to work on his speed in gap-closing. Offensively, he utilizes his keen sense of awareness to be in the right spot at the right time, every time. Soft hands and a deadly shot accentuate his ability to get creative, on occasion. Rock solid defensively, his strong positioning severely limits time and space for the opposition. All-in-all, a well-rounded, reliable, and consistent defenceman that can log a lot of ice time and provide his team with a stable presence on the back end.” – Brian Smith, VHLProspects.com

“A mobile and defender with size and strong puck skills who sticks to his opponents like glue. Fitzgerald is a rare specimen for a defender. He is a big-bodied puck mover with speed who plays with poise in all three zones. He is one of the top scoring blueliners thanks to his ability to run a power play, dictate the tempo of a game regardless of the situation and seize opportunities that nobody else was able to identify….. a strong, agile skater with a deceptively quick first step and the ability to make sharp directional changes in open ice. Getting the puck behind pesky opponents in the neutral zone can be done with either his wheels or with hard, crisp passes, but he isn’t the kind of defenseman who lets his forwards take it from there — he loves to jump into openings and create or finish from areas close to the hashmarks.” – Bob Tonner, Hockey Expert Magazine

“Fitz has some size at 6-4 and 225. However, he does not give up any skill as he has a tremendous outlet passing ability, distributes the puck extremely well, and has an accurate shot. Skating is far from a liability as he has strong edge work, gap control and can accelerate quickly to a high-end top gear.  All things being equal scouts and GMs will prefer the player with size and that should bode well for him in in his career.” – Peter Alexander, Prospect Ratings Index

    Strengths
One of best two-way defensemen available Strong on the puck Very smart Excellent positioning Weaknesses (Improvements to work on)
Overall skating: top-end speed Needs to keep anger in check, stay out of the penalty box Has a hard time saying no to a good roast beef sandwich
    VHL Potential
Fitzgerald has one of the better overall skill sets in this draft. This makes his upside that of a solid top-four defender who can play in any situation. Think he falls just short of being a franchise defenseman, but he isn’t far off. Has the ceiling of a generational talent.

    Offence – 8/10, Defence – 9/10

The start of the VHLM season has had Tzuyu show off her scoring prowess as the Halifax sit currently in first place with three wins in the first four games of the minor league season. Among the top scorers of the team are none other than the two defensemen from the Halifax 21st. Tzuyu currently with three goals, just one back from team leader Shawn Glade, the other core defender for the team. GM Glade has chosen for the time being to split up the two elite VHLM defenders, each manning their own pairing and only playing together when on special teams. Until anything happens to interrupt their success, one can assume that Halifax will move forward for the time being with that setup despite the recent setback against Las Vegas. Hopefully as the season progresses, Halifax's offense will get stronger as by all accounts it seems potent enough, but for now is playing the roles of sleeping giants. From pre-season, Tzuyu has also seen lots of progress in her skating ability, which still isn't the best but is on its way to getting stronger including her defensive game.

That however isn't the only thing going on with Tzuyu.

She has released her new album labelled "TT" with her group TWICE.

With her group TWICE, Tzuyu is looking cute, sporting a demon costume in the Halloween themed music video. The music video describes the feeling of falling in love and the feeling of a girls heart. The music video has already seen over 380 million views. A bunch of various cosplays are seen throughout the music video. Pinochhio, Tinker bell, White Rabbit, The Little Mermaid, Elsa and the White Queen feature appearances throughout the music video. The music video ends with a hint at another sequential video coming soon to continue the theme. The song has already been noted as one of the best performing songs in Asia this year, currently holding Number two and three on Billboard World and Billboard Japan already at certain points. Despite being one of the youngest in the group, Tzuyu has been building her appearances and has gained an incredible following. The combination of her onstage performance as well as her interviews have shown an incredibly charming (if not blunt) personality, in which often the tv show hosts and her own fans will tease her for her honesty and lack of ability to lie.

As if that wasn't enough, Tzuyu also competed recently in Idol Championship sports 2018 where she took home the top spot in archery again as the same in 2016. With a point difference of more than 13 points, her calm demeanor reflecting her incredibly accurate shooting. Her flair for dramatics reached viral status as her final shot to seal the championship included a hair flip shot where she had her hair tucked into the shot itself.

With her being a star in multiple disciplines, is it any wonder that her fan base has been growing at an exponential rate? Tune in next time as we explore more sides of the hottest player in the VHLM. Whats next on the horizon even? Cooking? Dating? Sex life?? Netflix preferences???

    1) Since it's not been too long since you've joined the league, what are thoughts on the league so far as a whole?
Seems like it will be pretty fun. Everyone so far has been very accommodating and helpful to help me hit the ground running

    2) Are there any areas in the league that you would like to see a change/improvement?
I think it's a bit too early to tell at this point as I've just joined. But I'm not one to shy away from suggesting things to improve the overall experience in the league.

    3) The VHLM Newsletter launched earlier this week, did you read it and was it helpful to you?
I don't believe I've stumbled upon it yet. I'm sure it is helpful, but I've been too busy focusing on my training to get ready for the upcoming season

    4) What are your aims this season in the VHLM?
I'm looking to always work hard and strive to improve on my game to help shape my career long term. I feel the VHLM is the place for that so I guess we'll see what happens.

    5) With the teams starting to take shape, who do you consider to be the favourite for the VHLM Founders Cup?
Hopefully Halifax. That new defenseman they got is not bad

6a) Is there any player on your VHL team that you're particularly looking forward to playing with when you make the VHL? (For players who were also in the VHL Draft)
Looking forward to playing alongside offensive dynamo, Tzuyu. Always exciting when you can have a player like that on your team.

6b) What do you think of your current VHLM team? (If you were selected in the VHLM Draft)?
I think we have a good team and will turn some heads this season.

6c) If a GM were to make you an offer, what kind of player would they be getting? (If you're currently unaffiliated - recently signed with Halifax).
I've always considered myself as a two way player. Need to play both ends of the ice in to be successful in this game.

Although the competing offers are strong, the opportunity to be able to play for our hometown crowd in Halifax is a bit of a dream come true.

Not only that, but it felt good to get actively recruited by the GM of Halifax. He was the only one who had approached me privately about my services. Had a good conversation with him about my role with the club as well as how they plan to use me. So being optimistic to see how things play out. Can only hope it works out for the both of us.

We will be signing with Halifax and look forward to joining our new team.
