  2. Review- LOVE that you used the movie for this. For me, all that was missing a little early life background. But other than that thoroughly enjoyed this bio. May actually come back and read it again without reviewing being on my mind. Nice work!
  3. Review- Great read! I loved the introduction you gave to the brothers, and how you encapsulated what it’s like to have a sibling rivalry, and the personalities you put into all parties involved in this piece. The father seems like your typical dad. Great job of humanizing your player. Also, really enjoyed the interview questions. The “pale skin” line got me haha. Glad to be a member of the Houston Bulls with you, man. Nice job.
  4. Review- Thoroughly enjoyed the read. I liked the way you laid out how Rusty truly is as a person. The fact he tips well and appreciates every member of the staff also shines a light on how good of a guy he is. Sounds like someone I’d want to grab a beer with. Great job!

  6. The Houston Bulls expansion teams inaugural season is close to being underway. While most of the league may be overlooking them, the players inside this locker room believe they can win now, and often. With scoring depth that can rival (and in some instances surpass) teams in the upper half of the league, a hunger/desire that’s unmatched, and a locker room with more chemistry than Bill Nye could even fathom, the Houston Bulls could be well on their way to shocking the world. Rookie centre Rhys Chism had this to say about his first training camp: “Honestly, ending up here is the best thing that could have happened to me. We have a group of guys here that not only can play good hockey, but are some of the best people I’ve ever been around. We all have that hunger to win and get better. The work we put in to get better every day is something we know about, and soon the rest of the league will as well. I love this locker room. We’re gonna shock everyone.”
  7. Childhood: Rhys Chism was born in Providence, Rhode Island to a mother who works in school health, and a father who had his own business. Rhys was your typical kid, he was outside a lot with his younger brother, Ryan (keep an eye out, he may be in the league as well before long). They grew up with woods in their backyard where they would build treehouses, go fishing and swimming at the pond, or make jumps with the neighborhood kids for their dirt bikes. They would frequent the local park where all of the neighborhood kids would be playing football, baseball, basketball, soccer, street hockey, pretty much every sport you could think of that kids play. Rhys was always the best athlete in any of those pickup games, but had a natural ability with hockey moreso than the other sports even though he’d never played on a team, watched hockey or even been on the ice before. He had his good group of friends and enjoyed his early childhood immensely. Everything changed though when the Chism’s moved to a different neighborhood. Suddenly a lonely kid with no friends, Rhys was always picked last for teams. He didn’t have the same fun he did before he left his previous home. His friends were nowhere near him. One day though, everything was set in motion. While helping his dad clean the garage, Rhys found an old article from the local paper, “Rick Chism scores fourth hat trick in two week span”. Not knowing his dad played hockey, Rhys asked his father what the article was about, and was then informed of his dad’s hockey career. Rick Chism made it to the junior Olympics and was being touted as a high draft pick before blowing out his knee, and not being the same player after, ultimately deciding to call it quits. Rhys asked his father if he would teach him to skate and play hockey the way he did. Rick, knowing the disappointment he felt after his injury, decided to think about it. Eventually Rick obliged, he built an ice rink in their backyard, and the hockey career of Rhys Chism began. Middle/High school: In middle school Rhys spent most of his time playing hockey and excelled right away, showing he had a shot just like his father. When he wasn’t playing hockey he would be at local arcades (because apparently those are still a thing) and just being a kid. There was no pressure from his parents. Rhys was doing well in the classroom and away from it. But by the time Rhys got to high school he wanted a break from hockey. Rhys got involved with the wrong kids and started skipping class, then school all together. With his grades slipping as well as losing his interest in playing hockey or any sports for that matter, he started becoming lost. Noticing their son was struggling, Rhys’ parents decided they needed to do something. Rick sat Rhys down and gave him an ultimatum, he could play hockey and be homeschooled or he could stay in school and keep throwing his life away, but with every failing grade would have to pay his parents to stay at the house. Rhys furious with this ultimatum decided to move out. He stayed with his cousin Brett thinking things would blow over. For three weeks, Rhys didn’t attend school and had no word from his parents. But one night his junior year he got a phone call, it was his younger brother, Ryan. Rick had been diagnosed with lymphoma (a cancer within the lymph nodes). Rhys went home to see his dad as soon as he hung up the phone. Upon seeing Rhys, Rick told him to come with him into the garage. They talked for a while about what Rhys wanted to do with his life, he didn’t really have an answer. Rick then told Rhys he had faith in him figuring it out, and knew he would be okay. Rick went inside while Rhys decided to hang back in the garage for a little while longer. While looking through boxes and pictures hanging up, reminiscing of times when he was younger, Rhys found a framed article about him playing hockey. With emotions running wild, Rhys realized why he began playing. He hurried inside and told his dad that he wanted to play hockey again, that he would do whatever it takes. Over the next few months he started training again, then joined his high school’s hockey team. With his newfound focus, Rhys ditched the people who were leading him down the wrong path, and began doing extremely well in the classroom again. He even got a girlfriend for the first time in his life. One teacher of his, Mark Su, spoke of Rhys and how he was as a student. “When Rhys first came to my class he wanted nothing to do with school. He wasn’t necessarily a bad kid, but I think he didn’t feel challenged which resulted in him being bored, and acting out. He was wasting his potential. He never did his homework, but he always tested well. So I’d like to think with that he at least paid some attention in the classroom. When he came back after his dad was diagnosed with cancer, he was basically a new person. So focused, and calm, and just an enjoyable kid. He was a great student in what was pretty much his second chance.” Having only a year and a half before he would start college, Rhys exploded onto the hockey scene once again, setting school records for almost every offensive category (they weren’t even close), and leading his high school to a second place finish and then ultimately a state championship his senior year. Being able to see his son play hockey again made Rick elated. Speaking on his son after beating his battle with cancer, Rick had this to say: “I’m an extremely proud father. Seeing him out there on the ice absolutely free, and all of the bs that he got rid of to allow himself to get there again. As a parent I can’t express to you how proud I am. He’s a special kid.” Post High School and VHLM: With not many college offers due to his grades during the troubled phase he went through, and him still wanting to play, Rhys decided he would try to go pro instead. After going undrafted, Rhys tried out for different scouts. Upon seeing his raw talent (albeit a bit green due to his time away) the expansion Houston Bulls of the VHLM decided to offer Rhys a contract which he gladly accepted. Everything happens for a reason, and with the incredible locker room the Houston Bulls have, you couldn’t have picked a better place for Chism to end up. With this kid’s focus, drive, and natural ability, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say he has an incredibly bright future ahead of him.
  8. Name: Rhys Chism Age: 18 Birthplace: Providence, Rhode Island, USA Height: 5’ 10 Weight: 170 lbs Position: Centre Shoots: Right “Pass first attitude but has a nose for finding the net.. Not the physically toughest guy which could be a downfall.. Scrappy with very quick hands on faceoffs, could do much worse than this kid.. Incredibly unselfish player, puts the team before himself.. Drive to win is impeccable.. Fun guy in the locker room, but swears he’s from New Zealand and speaks with a New Zealand accent even though he’s from Providence.. it’s weird. Finds passing lanes that you wouldn’t even know were there at times.. Wicked wrist shot that should only get better with time and training.. Has all the potential in the world, but he needs the right mentality, and has to bulk up or he could be eaten alive in this league.. Definite room for improvement, but also incredibly high potential” Strengths Scoring: Chism has a knack to find the net in creative ways. His wrist shot, and one-timer abilities are his bread and butter, a decent slapshot that should get better in time is also in his repertoire. He may not tear the scoring sheet apart in this his first season, but the potential is there to be a serious player for years to come if he can put it all together. Could be a serious offensive threat. Faceoffs: An area Chism focuses a good chunk of his training into. Winning faceoffs to get his team the puck as much as possible, and in crucial game situations is where he can truly excel. Time of possession will never be an issue with Chism taking faceoffs. You could do much worse than this kid. Teammate Utilization: The ultimate unselfish player. While he is competitive and will score his share of goals, Chism lives for dishing the puck to his guys in creative ways to get them and the team as a whole on the scoreboard. Knows how to play to his teammates strengths. 50-60 assists per season is not out of the question when this kid reaches his potential. Weaknesses Fighting: This should come as no surprise due to Chism having been in only one fight in his life. He woke up in the hospital and thought he was from New Zealand. He still swears by it and it’s a sore subject to bring up. He’s not an overly aggressive or intense individual, Chism lets his play do the talking rather than getting into it with an opposing player. If you want an enforcer on your team, look elsewhere. Chism will need to learn how to hold his own though, because guys could be gunning for him if he becomes that high level talent. Checking: This can also fall under the category of Chism not being physically aggressive. He doesn’t like to take hits or dish them out, though he has stated he’s working on getting tougher in those areas. What he lacks in checking he makes up for in his knack to find the puck and force turnovers in other ways. He should be able to get by on defense. Strength: Standing at 5’10 170 lbs. Chism is not a big specimen by any means. He has met with trainers who should get him on the right path, but he needs to get his strength up in order to last in this league. Once he does he should be an animal. What he lacks in strength he makes up for in his agility. The strength will come with the right training and mindset.
  9. 1) The draft is over, the signings have settled down, and the VHLM is just about ready to get things started. Who do you think is the favorite, going into this season? I’ll have to go with Vegas since they won last season.. but don’t be surprised if there’s a dark horse or two this season. 2) With teams filling up this quickly, further expansion of the VHLM might be a potential talking point. Where would you put another minors team? Boston. Great sports city. 3) The offseason's ending- what's your player's plan to get back in shape for game 1? Stop eating tacos, and train as much as possible. 4) Do you/your player have any preseason superstitions to help boost their performance? Wearing fun socks. 5) Now that you've had time to get used to your team, who's been your favorite teammate thus far? Honestly can’t pick one. Everyone has been so awesome. Houston has an incredible locker room. 6) If the commissioners/GMs could do one thing to make your VHLM experience more fun, what would it be? Not sure, only been involved for a day. It’s pretty damn fun already.
  10. 1) The VHLM draft is over! Are you happy with where you ended up? If you're graduating from the VHLM this season, how do you think your previous team did? I wasn’t drafted, but definitely happy with where I signed. 2) If you were VHLM drafted or signed, are you happy with where you ended up? If you're going to be VHL drafted, where do you hope to end up? Very glad to be with Houston. 3) Now that we're done playing hockey for a little while, what is your player going to do to enjoy the offseason? Get ready for the upcoming season. 4) The Las Vegas Aces took the Founder's Cup this year, is there any message you'd like to pass along to the team (or your teammates, if you won)? Congrats to Vegas, new to the league but have read a lot about their success already. 5) What's your #1 goal to hit this offseason, before heading into your next one? To improve overall and get the hang of this league. 6) What, or who, has been the most helpful resource in getting you familiar with the site/the league in general? I’d have to say @Sonnet and @Thranduil have been the biggest helps to this point.
  11. Accepted. Looking forward to being a member of Houston!
