  8. Aksel Thomassen Rookie Profile Aksel Thomassen - #19 Position - Center Moscow Red Wolves VHLM AGE: 18 (March 22nd, 1996) Early Career At the age of 16 Aksel Thomassen played in the Metal Ligaen for the Herning Blue Fox. He centered a line with Joachim Linnet and Tomas Petruska. In his first season with Herning he had trouble following the pace of the game despite being a very strong skater. It was apparent though that he had great vision and strength for his age. He finished that season with 20 points in 40 games played. His coaches raved about his playmaking abilities but felt there was a lot of room for improvement. Head coach Todd Bjorkstrand had this to say "Aksel showed flashes of brilliance this season and also some growing pains. We definitely see the potential and are looking forward to seeing the progress he'll have made next season." Proving his coaches right Aksel came out flying the following season showing off his powerful skating and strength. At the age of 17 Thomassen had found his footing in Denmarks elite hockey league. Ending the campaign with 40 points in 46 games played. This would not go unnoticed by VHLM scouts. Aksel Thomassen in warm up for the Red Wolves. VHLM With a strong finish to his season in Herning, Moscow GM Bruce Wayne quickly picked him up on waivers. Early on in Askel's VHLM career he has shown a more polished two-way game, but defending his own zone continues to be his biggest weakness. With Season 38 currently in progress Thomassen has recorded 12 points in 13 games. Comparable Aksel Thomassen plays a similar style to Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Thomassen uses his skating and strength to drive the net or force defenders into mistakes. He is very good on the half wall with his vision and hockey IQ. However Malkin was a more well rounded player at Thomassen's age. Thomassen is comparable to Evgeni Malkin. Pros Skating - Aksel won fastest skater at Hernings skills competition this past season. His long legs allow him to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time. His strides look so effortless that it throws defenders off. Vision - He has an act for making highlight reel passes. At times it feels like he has a sixth sense for where his teammates will be. He is very good at predicting how a play will unfold in the offensive zone. Strength - At the age of 18 Aksel can easily hold his own against men twice his age. He uses his strength to gain the upper hand in the offensive zone and protect the puck. Standing at 6'3" and weighing over 210 pounds he already has the size to be a pro in the VHL. Cons Defense - Though his compete level is high at times he has shown signs of laziness in his own end. Has trouble reading plays in his own end during sustained pressure, not an ideal penalty killer. Although recently in the VHLM he has shown some positive signs in his own zone. Face Offs - Even though Aksel has shown impressive strength in his young career thus far he has had a tendency to be easily beaten on face offs. At times his coaches questioned his compete level because of this. If Thomassen wants to continue playing center he will have to find a new method of taking face offs. Compete Level - As mentioned above his compete level has come into question with his defensive play and his face off abilities. More will be expected of him at the VHLM level if these questions continue to linger.
