  8. Robert Jelen Position: Defense Born: July 1st, 1998 Shoots: Left Jersey Number: 36 Height (ft.): 6'0" Weight (lbs.): 190 lbs Birthplace: Prague, Czech Republic Player Attributes: CK = Checking: 50 FG = Fighting: 40 DI = Discipline: 40 SK = Skating: 50 ST = Strength: 40 PH = Puck Handling: 40 FO = Face Offs: 40 PA = Passing: 60 SC = Scoring: 40 DF = Defense: 57 PS = Penalty Shot: 40 EX = Experience: 40 LD = Leadership: 40 Robert Jelen is a defensive defenseman currently playing for the Moscow Red Wolves of the VHLM. He was drafted eight overall by the Red Wolves in the S50 VHLM dispersal draft, so he has been a high profile player for quite some time, which makes his success virtually not surprising. Since then, he has become the anchor for the Red Wolves’s defense and remains one of the most essential figures in their locker room, which is obviously invaluable for his teammates and the other players on the team. This scouting report will focus on Robert Jelen’s strengths, weaknesses, and what type of player he should currently be described and understood as. Strengths: Checking: When Robert decides to lay the hammer on his opponent, he does so quite decisively. An excellent checker from both pure natural strength and technique; Robert has the ability to disrupt nearly any offensive possession by the opponent, by simply checking them. The impact is so powerful, that the puck will more often than not simply be lost by the opponents stick and lead to a turnover. In fact, some players always check from behind, just based off the fear of being hit by Robert, because once you are; you are going to feel the ramifications for several days at the least. Passing: For a defensive defenseman, Robert being as dynamic as a playmaker he is, can be defined as astonishing. Honestly, if you told a stranger to select between Robert and one of the best playmakers in the league, there is a significant chance the stranger would select Robert several times. He can make nearly any pass when on the ice and sometimes the passes are the ones the opponents least expect. Especially on the power play, which Robert captains and controls at times, his passing is so precise, that rarely when he is in control does the puck go pass the blue line. This obviously leads to extended power play opportunities, which can be an invaluable asset at times. Defense: So you are the offensive player lined up against Robert and hope to score against him during your game, good luck with that idea. Robert is simply a wall and a fortress on defense and will perhaps makes a defensive mistake once every ten games. His technique is as perfect as you can have it, and his combination of epic skating speed, and brute strength simply make him the perfect defensive machine. Essentially, whatever side of the ice Robert is covering during the game is locked down. Having one side of the ice covered absolutely perfecto by your defense is as strong of a weapon a team can possess. This is the last of the strongest three skills Robert possesses as a player. Weaknesses: Strength: Jelen has average strength as a player. He can certainly take a few hits and will still maintain possession of the puck, but he can be rattled quite quickly. Rumor has it, Jelen has been attending the gym on a daily basis and is working quite diligently to become stronger on his skates. With his will and determination being legendary around the league, this skill will most likely be improved over time, even if he has already been a seasoned player in the league. Scoring: Robert is certainly capable of scoring goals on occasion, he did score two this regular season for the Red Wolves. However, by no means is his shot eye popping good or effective. He can make a goal if left wide open, but rarely will you see a highlight reel goal coming out of nowhere. Lacks a great arsenal of shots, as he is severely limited to having a strong slap shot, due to his pure strength. Robert has shown improvement over time with his shot though, and it would not be surprising if this skill become a strength at some point in the future. Overall: Robert Jelen is a defenseman any team in the league would crave for, because he excels in so many different areas and some that are unexpected as a defensive defenseman. He is nearly impossible to beat on the defensive front of the game. Furthermore, he can easily intimidate the opposition through his pure strength and ability to be a monster checker. In addition, he has some really solid offensive ability too, as he remains a dynamic playmaker for a defenseman, while also simultaneously being able to be a serviceable goal scorer. To call Robert one of the best defenseman in the league would not be a stretch by any means.
  9. Robert Jelen Biography Robert Tomas Jelen was born 18 years ago in a big, bustling hospital in Prague, Czech Republic. His family lived in a middle class neighbourhood, and were perfectly average. Robert played with other kids, went to school, and basically had a very average childhood. He always excelled in sports, like rugby, soccer, and especially hockey. At the age of 13, Robert’s parents had saved up enough money to ship him off to another country so he could be discovered as an athletic phenom. When faced with many choices, such as Boston, Moscow, Detroit, and Vancouver, Robert chose to move to Toronto, Ontario to pursue his dreams. He had chosen to pursue hockey as a career. Robert always knew that he had a special knack for the sport, and he really raised some eyebrows in The Six. Robert attended Agnes Macphail Public School for his remaining time in elementary school. Unfortunately, Macphail PS did not have a hockey team, so he was not able to play for his school. Robert was an average student, not too smart of a kid, but not a complete idiot either. He just did enough to get by and graduated from Macphail as a 13 year old. While in elementary school, Robert played hockey in the Don Mills Flyers program. He played AAA throughout his time at Macphail and was always among the top scorers on his team. He caught the attention of many high school team coaches, and he was presented with several options when he graduated. At least 7 high school coaches approached Jelen with offers to come to their school and play on their teams. Robert took many weeks to decide where he would be playing high school hockey, but when all was said and done, he chose to take his talents to St. Michael’s College School. Robert was hoping to bring St. Mike’s their 2nd OFSAA championship in recent memory, as they had won it in 2014. St. Michael’s coach, Chris DiPiero, was a huge driving force in bringing Robert to the school, and was not letting him leave without that sweet, sweet OFSAA gold. In his first season of hockey with the St. Michael’s Major’s Varsity team, Robert was a solid defensive presence, but had a very little part in the team’s offensive efforts. He registered 48 games played, only missing a few, with no goals and a total of 18 assists. On the other hand, Jelen put up 96 shot blocks and played on both the power play and the penalty kill. Di Piero really believed in Jelen and took him on the team again for his grade 10 year. After 2 more solid, but unflashy seasons at S. Michael’s, Jelen’s time with the Majors was almost up. And, he had yet to win that coveted OFSAA title. In fact, Jelen and the Mjors had only reached OFSAA once in three years! In Jelen’s final season, he absolutely went off on the Toronto high school hockey circuit, registering a grand total of 53 points in 52 games, from the blueline. Di Piero and Jelen rode all the way to OFSAA, where they beat Appleby College in the finals. Robert Jelen finally had that much sought after OFSAA gold. After high school, Robert had gained the much wanted attention of some Major Junior hockey teams. He had not been drafted by any OHL teams, but quite a few of the teams were knocking at his door now. After much deliberation, Robert Jelen decided to skip the OHL and try his hand at the Ontario University level. In the CIS, Robert would be able to attend school and play hockey at the same time. Jelen made the ultimate decision to attend Ryerson University and study Sports Media, so he had a backup plan if all else failed. Here are what some were saying about Robert Jelen joining the Rams: He comes to the VHL, with high school and CIS experience under his belt. {Sorry, I’m not going any further. Didn’t even realize I wrote this much until I threw it into a word counter }
