One of the main reasons I enjoy hockey is watching new players grow. It makes a new season just that much more exciting, seeing which rookies are truly great, which rookies are busts, and which rookies come out of nowhere to steal the spotlight. This excitement is no different in the VHL, while we can see the specific attributes to each player, all of our fates are still at the hands of the simulator.

(Note: This list is in no particular order)

    The Red Menace  | G | 6'6, 190lb

Boasting an incredible stat-line, Menace has quickly risen the rankings of the Wranglers in their first year with the franchise. Playing with the Istanbul Red Wolves, the Russian native had a record of 32-14-4, while maintaining a .925 SV%. Menace is also a solid weekly earner, never gaining less than 5 points in a given week.
Despite their early success, getting a spot on the Calgary roster as a goalie is going to be tough for Menace. Their starter, Sirkants Klamasteris has had a very long and successful career, and with another season on their contract, they don't seem to be going anywhere for a season. This leaves the expiring contract of Dexter Vaughn, the backup, to be the only opening in the Calgary lineup. This doesn't mean that it's a free pass for Menace to get a roster spot next season. Fellow Wranglers prospect Alex Parise will be hungry for that spot as well, they've spent 2 years in the VHLE, and have been very consistent with a .917 average between those 2 years.
Overall, Menace is going to be a future VHL starter, although we might not see him for the next few seasons if he stays in the Calgary system.

    Alex Parise  | G | 6'8, 205lb

The S79 draftee comes next on this list. Parise has spent their last 2 seasons with Bratislava, where they have been stuck behind starter Orion D H Chiester IX in both years. Despite their small portion size, however, they have shown good talent in their games played.
Over Parise's 2 seasons with Bratislava, they have a record of 33-17-4, with a .917 SV%. As mentioned before, Parise's path to the Calgary roster is fighting for that backup spot against Menace. Despite Parise's contract expiring in this off-season, I don't expect Calgary to let Parise go into free agency. Their career just started, and they haven't had the chance to showcase themselves enough in the VHLE. Compared to Menace, I think the Russian just edges out Parise, despite the 50 point TPE gap in favor of Parise.
Overall, I see Parise becoming a fringe starter in the VHL if they keep up this level of TPE earning over the next few seasons. We definitely won't see this Canadian in the VHL for the next few years, unless Calgary decides to trade one of their goalie prospects, which isn't entirely impossible.

    Daniel Janser  | LW | 5'8, 183lb

The final prospect on this list is Daniel Janser, the Swiss-born winger. In his first season in the VHLE, after being drafted 8th overall in the VHL draft, he scored 69 points in 72 games. Janser's 2-Way play is the most significant aspect of his game. Even some defenseman don't rack up 215 hits in a season.
Janser's path to the VHL would be very tough to make in this offseason. The Wranglers are currently running a 6-4-2, meaning Janser would have to slot in on the 2nd line of forwards, where he could replace veteran left-winger Pekko Viitanen. Viitanen is a free agent this offseason, after putting up 59 points in 72 games. The difference in TPE between the two is vast, however, and Janser needs to grow his TPE bank by around 200 to be able to match Viitanen. That is why Janser will not make the VHL roster in S82, instead bursting onto the premier scene in S83 and being a part of the new Calgary core.
Overall, Janser is going to be a VHL level winger in a few short seasons, and will probably grow to be an elite playmaker, only if he keeps up his max earnings every week.

Question 1: Were you expecting to make the team? Why or why not?
To be honest, no I didn't expect to make the team. I thought I would still be too low TPE. Was pleasantly surprised when I was asked!

Question 2: What do you expect from this team going into the tournament?
Hopefully we can make the medal round and come away with some hardware! That would be ideal

Question 3: What team do you think will win the tournament this year?
Hopefully either us or Team Canada. It would be nice to take home the gold, but if we can't get the job done then I am routing for Canada.

Question 4: What are your plans after this offseason?
Well the VHLM draft is coming up soon so I am preparing for that. I am hoping to goto a cool team with an active LR. It'll be one season in the M competing for the Founder's Cup and then hopefully off to the VHL!

Question 5: Who's your pick for VHL rookie of the year in S82?
My guess would be Vasile Lamb but I guess we will have to see. It's a good crop of rookies this upcoming season.

Question 6: If you were to start a podcast (not VHL related), what would it be called, and what would it be about?
I would probably do a fantasy sports podcast as I am pretty into fantasy hockey and fantasy baseball. Not sure what I would call it. I used to do a podcast in VHL called the VHL Roundtable but it was a ton of work and it got to a point where I didn't have time to do it every week anymore.

(Before we start off, no this isn’t going to be the way you made a player in the VHL)
Hello everyone, welcome to another one of my articles where I find a random thing online and think that I can convert it into interesting article! This time I was going through YouTube and I kept on finding some different “NFL create your player” and I thought that there must be one for hockey. To my very big surprise there wasn’t a single one which is why I decided to make one. However, this one will involve many things from real life and inside the VHL. I will be using VHL, VHLE, and VHLM teams and some real life data such as height along with many more things. Without further stalling let’s get into it.

    1. Height
Lets start off with a simple one for your player. Lets get the height of your new VHL player! If you’re under 5 feet in real life your player will be 5 feet. 5 feet - 5’8” is 5’6”, 5’8”- 6 feet is 6’1”. 6 feet-6’6” is 6’8”. Anything over 6’8” is 7 feet.

    2. Weight
To find  your players weight we will be using what team your player is/was in the VHLM. If your VHLM team is/was Halifax you’re 140 pounds (bit light to play hockey eh?). If your VHLM team is/was Houston then you’re 150 pounds. Las Vegas is 160 pounds. Mexico City is 170 pounds. Miami is 180 pounds. Mississauga is 190 pounds,  Ottawa is 200 pounds. Philadelphia is 210, San Diego is 220 and Saskatoon is a big ol’ 230 pounds.

    3. Position
Now let’s find what position you play in. If you’re in the VHLM you’re a goalie, if you’re in/are going to the VHLE you’re a defence, and if you’re in/are going to the VHL you’re a forward.

    4. Age
To see how old you are let’s look at the TPA you have available. If you have from 0-100 TPA you’re a young 18 year old. If you have from 100-200 TPA you’re a slightly older 22 year old. 200-300 means you’re 25. 300-400 means you’re getting old at 29. 400-500 means you’re 32, and if have  500+ TPA you’re a very old 35 year old playing hockey.

    5. Nationality
To make it easier for you guys (and me) I will add 6 nations: Canada, USA, Russia,Norway, Sweden, and Finland. To see what country you’re from let’s just use what continent you’re from in real life (not where you’re living or where you’re born just the country you would consider yourself from). If you’re from Asia you’re a proud Russian, South Americans can be American, North Americans can go to the country with the place with Alert: Canada. Africa means Finland for you. European players can be Swedish and Oceanian players can be from Norway.

    6. VHL team
(To make this simple I will be adding just the top 4 regular season teams.) Now that we know all the basic information lets see what VHL team you end up on. To figure this out let’s use the first letter of your real name. If your name starts with any letter from A-G you got drafted by the Moscow Menace. If your name starts with G-M you just got drafted by the good ol’ Seattle Bears. If your name starts with any letter from N-T you just got drafted by the Vancouver Wolves, and lastly if your name starts from T-Z you just got drafted by the Malmo Nighthawks.

    7. Average capped TPE
One which will make a bigger difference than the other ones. To figure this out you can just use a simple method by seeing how many banked TPE you have. If you have 0 banked your earn an average of 6. 0-10 banked means you earn about 8. 10-30 means you earn about 10 a week, and if you have over 30 banked TPE it means that you earn a full 12 TPE a week which is very well done by you!

    8. Stick handling hand
Now that we’ve looked at some things which are common in the VHL, let’s look at something which we don’t see being talked about a lot in the VHL. Let’s look at how you hold the stick in a good game of hockey. To find out how you play the puck in a normal game we will be looking at something not many people will be expecting. To see what hand you play you must figure out if your profile picture consists of something related to hockey. If you think that there is something related to hockey in your picture you’re a player who plays the puck with their left, if you’re someone who doesn’t have hockey in their profile picture you’re someone who plays the puck with their right.

    9. Trophies won
Now with our last two questions coming up, let’s see how good of a player you became. To find out how many trophies you earned let’s put a simple method into test. To see if you’ve earned trophies do the following: go to player management, go to approved updates, find your last 3 approved updates. If these three result in 3-5 you’ve ended a career with no individual trophies won. If you get 5-8 you’ve won a trophy for yourself. 8-12 brings you 2 career trophies, 12-15 brings you 3 and anything over 15 gives you 5 trophies which you earned by your will and power.

    10. Best stat
This one, unlike the other ones, will be a very straight forward. To find this out you just have to go to your player and check what your best stat is. This is one of the simplest thing you can do.

Now put everything together and see what you get. That’s your player which will play in the VHL for you and that’s who you are. Personally, I’m a 6’1, 170 pound, defence man that’s Russian. I’m also playing for Vancouver, who gets around 8 capped TPE a week. I also play leftie and earned myself a trophy. Lastly my best statistic is strength, defence, checking, and puck handling. Leave your players down in the replies. This is Dabnad signing off.

Their starter, Sirkants Klamasteris has had a very long and successful career, and with another season on their contract, they don't seem to be going anywhere for a season. lidz reacted to Daniel Janser in A tale of two Brothers // Inter-season interviews part 1
    Swiss Central Gazzette

After the dust has settled when our intrepid heroes fell short in the playoffs, we approached both of them for a statement about their inter-season schedule as well as what the future holds for them.

We will start with Daniel, the elder of the brothers, who is at the moment in Abbotsford, BC for the Pro-Am tournament. To that purpose, our Canadian correspondent, Jean-Luc Lieuxperroux, travelled across the continent to have a one-on-one interview with the soon-to-be VHL-rookie. He met the young Swiss after a training session with his Pro-Am team the 'Abbotsford Firs' in the Abbotsford Centre

Emblem of the Brigade of the JST (Junior Showcase Tournament)

JLL (Jean-Luc Lieuxperroux): 'Hi Daniel, nice to meet you again. How are you doing?'
DJ (Daniel Janser): 'Hi Jean-Luc, good to see you, too. I am fine, thanks. How was your travel across Canada?'

JLL: 'Don't get me started. In view of all the shutdowns, I decided to drive the 4,300 kilometres from Mississauga. Winter played some evil tricks with my ride, as roads were closed off, passes blocked and temperatures not really toasty to say the least. So let's get this show on the road with our first question: You were named GM of the Brigade in the Junior Showcase Tournament. How did this happen?'
DJ: 'Sorry to hear about your struggles to get here, Jean-Luc. Well, as soon as I learned that the JST will take place and remembering how much it meant to Marcel and me to have a place to practice and play hockey until we were drafted, I immediately wanted to pay back to the next crop of future VHL-ers. To make them feel wanted and appreciated as well as give them a platform to showcase their skills and potential. It could be pure chance that I ended up getting the job with the Brigade, where Marcel and I started our venture to the VHLM and beyond. Alas, I like to think that Ricer, the GM of the Wranglers, has had played a role in that allocation, as he knows I started there. It makes certainly for a good story.'

JLL: 'And how does this tournament go for the Brigade?'
DJ: 'We made it into the playoffs as the second best team and are tied 1-1 in the series at the moment. There are some very talented kids in the Brigade team (and of course in the other teams as well) and I am convinced that some of them have already what it takes to become stars, others need more training to get the best out of them and may end up to have solid careers in professional hockey.'

JLL: 'With your schedule pretty filled in with your job as a GM in the Brigade and AGM of the Hounds, what made you sign up for the Pro-Am tournament?'
DJ: *laughs* 'You know, sometimes I ask that myself. I have to put the blame on Ricer again, as he was selling that tournament so hard in the Wranglers' locker room I HAD to be part of it. So here I am now, in a star studded team. It is great and humbling at the same time. I mean, to share the locker room with legends like Dominic Gobeil, who is on a farewell tour, after a career season in Prague. This dude made the post season every single year in his VHL career. Or Nic McMuffin, who played last season for the Hounds in the VHLM. It is kind of cool to play now with him.'

JLL: 'Are you still game for any World Cup appearances, should you be nominated?'
DJ: 'Hell, yeah. I consider it as a big honour to represent a team on such a level. And I am almost Canadian in that respect that there is no such thing as 'too much Hockey'. So lidz, call me.'

JLL: 'What will be your next moves, going into the big leagues next season?'
DJ: 'I already hired a real estate agent to look for a house in the Calgary area. Something with a patch of garden would be nice, ideally in walking distance to the Saddledome, maybe on the banks of the Elbow River. I will also help Marcel with his move to Vasteras, as I made some acquaintances when I played in Oslo as these cities are not really far apart. I am curious how he will fare in Sweden. Apart from that, the usual thing: Workout, prepping for the next season. This time I will not have to learn a new language, as I am already fairly fluent in English. There maybe a surprise coming for the next season, but I am not at liberty to talk about this as of now.'

JLL: 'You are a cruel man, but knowing you from the past I know that it is futile to pry and can just hope that you will give our paper a headstart, once you are free to spill the beans.'
    DJ: 'No worries, I will.'

JLL: 'Okay, that were all the questions I had for this interview. Thanks for your precious time.'
DJ: 'Don't mention it. You know what? Since you undertook such a journey to come here, the least I can do is to invite you for lunch. There is a nice restaurant just around the corner, who does a decent poutine.'

    JLL: 'Deal.'

We will revert in our next issue with an interview with Marcel. Stay curious.

Nicholas Blue, a 6'0, 204lb, 2-Way defenseman has entered for the upcoming VHLM draft.

His life started in the bustling city of New York, where he quickly fell in love with the game of hockey. His parents were avid VHL fans, but neither of them pursued the sport outside of their local junior leagues. At just the age of 5 he was entered into the NYJHL, where he actually started as a forward. However, by the age of 8, his coach on the Manhattan Island Tigers realized his defensive potential. He quickly started to play Blue on the defensive pairings, and he shined, quickly turning into a top defenseman in the league. Finally, at the age of 13, Nicholas was able to play competitive hockey in the second level of the North East Junior Hockey League.

With his incredible experience in hockey, Blue became a top pairing defenseman as soon as he stepped on the ice. In his first competitive season, he posted a wonderful stat-line (42 games, 30 points), and won the best defenseman award for his league. In his second year, he was sent up to the first level, where he still maintained defensive consistency, but his offensive magic wasn't there. In his second year at the first level he found himself again, putting up big offensive numbers, while still maintaining his elite defensive status. Scouts were starting to notice him, but he wasn't that popular of a prospect because of the competition level of the NEJHL. He had the option to move to many higher level leagues, but decided to stay in his home for his last 2 seasons and committed to staying in the NEJHL.

His last 2 years were years of a steady rise to NEJHL stardom, winning the Best Defenseman in NEJHL award twice, and winning the MVP award as a 17 year old as well. He is very excited to see where he lands in the VHLM draft.

    NICHOLAS BLUE - JUNIOR STATLINE

NEJHL II (13) | 42 games, 6 goals, 24 assists, 30 points (Best Defenseman in NEJHL II Award)
    NEJHL (14) | 40 games, 1 goal, 14 assists, 15 points
    NEJHL (15) | 42 games, 4 goals, 31 assists, 35 points
NEJHL (16) | 42 games, 8 goals, 40 assists, 48 points (Best Defenseman in NEJHL Award)
NEJHL (17) | 42 games, 11 goals 41 assists, 52 points (Best Defenseman in NEJHL Award, NEJHL Offensive Defenseman Award, NEJHL MVP Award)
