VHL Lore: History of Tanking What is Tanking Incase you don't know what tanking is in sports, it's basically the act of intentionally trying to lose to get a better draft pick at the end of the season. It's done in almost every sport, including hockey, even though Gary Bettman says that "no team actively tanks." It is also no surprise that in the VHL, teams actively throw away their season for better odds at landing a franchise player, as it's the fastest way to jumpstart a rebuild and get your team back on the right track. History of Tanking the past five seasons For this short media spot, we're gonna take a look at the past five seasons (including this season), so seasons 96 to 92. I will define tanking as actively trying to lose, so basically having around 20 wins or less I believe to be tanking. In theory, you could have around 25-30 wins and still be tanking, as you're just doing it less than other teams, but we're looking at bad cases of tanking. We'll be going team by team and if you're on the list, you are a victim of tanking, shame! We'll go in alphabetical order, if you aren't on this list, congratulations, you haven't tanked in the past five seasons! D.C. Dragons S94: 21-43-8 [-86] S95: 16-49-7 [-129] S96: 9-38-3 [-103] Description: First on this list, we have the D.C. Dragons. D.C. was a fairly solid team in S93-S94, but with an core that was inching closer to retirement, it was no surprise the rebuild was started. However, D.C. has been actively attempting to lose for three seasons in a row, and they've probably got another season of it before they can attempt to reap the rewards. It seems a little odd, as they actually are going backwards, where usually you would start with a record like in S96, and then start going up in wins. They just seem to somehow get worse, but with a new GM that could end up changing the fate of the team. They've got some young pieces on their team including a massive prospect pool where if only half pan out, they've basically got a full team. It will be interesting to see if D.C. can steer the ship around, but they've got to start doing it soon as they're wasting years away from their players at the moment. HC Davos Dynamo S92: 20-46-6 [-121] S93: 13-55-4 [-180] Description: After the era with Jake Thunder and Co., the team needed a rebuild and it's no surprise that they had tanking on their mind. However, Davos seemed to get out of their tanking ways fairly fast, as they only really spent two seasons attempting to lose. The fast turnaround is what everyone wants to see and a sign of a fairly good GM, but an even better GM would never be in this situation. Regardless, they're probably pretty happy as the team now is doing very well and it was a successful tank job by Alex. Helsinki Titans S94: 23-45-4 [-81] S95: 23-40-9 [-81] S96: 11-36-3 [-96] Description: Helsinki was in a desperate need for a rebuild, after their old core just couldn't really make the cut. Lots of players eventually wanted out and the team was basically thrown into a rebuild, whether they liked it or not. This is going to be their third season in the rebuild, and honestly, they're probably going to have two more seasons of it. However, with a new GM like DC, they've got a chance to turn it around and potentially build themselves a very solid team in a couple of seasons. They have an insane amount of prospects and like DC, if half of them pan out, they'll be looking pretty damn good. However, they've really got to start getting things going or it won't be worth it and they'll be stuck in a never ending cycle. London United S95: 20-45-7 [-96] S96: 2-44-3 [-149] Description: London after their cups desperately needed a rebuild and with their new GM, it's no surprise they did so. However, this season might be one of the worst seasons of all time for London. I mean, this team genuinely might not even get five wins and if you want to tank, this is 100% how you would tank. I mean, for the players it's probably not fun at all, but if you want a high draft pick it must be done. I think they'll have one more season of tanking as well before they even start to sniff for the playoffs, but in EU, you have four teams genuinely tanking that who knows. Los Angeles Stars S93: 5-63-4 [-202] S94: 20-48-4 [-119] S95: 22-44-6 [-76] Description: LA found success in the past, but it was time to rebuild when they were hitting S93. Unfortunately, they've lost a fair amount of players due to random retirements and such, so they got set back further than they would've wanted in all honesty. Also, some people might say they're "tanking" this season, but I genuinely think they're at least trying to win this season. They are further ahead than most teams in the rebuild and they could be good starting next season potentially fighting for a wildcard spot. They just need a couple more players to round out their roster and I think they'll be ready to roll. This should be the last season they have a losing record for a while. Prague Phantoms S94: 4-63-5 [-198] S95: 11-55-6 [-168] S96: 11-36-3 [-96] Description: This is probably the best tank job I have seen on this list. Not only are they bad, but they are always terrible when they're tanking and towards at the bottom, it's pretty impressive. However, eventually you need to start winning and honestly, Prague has got some time before they do so. They do need to start putting up some decent results soon and with most of EU tanking, they could start sneaking into a playoff spot with a losing record to be honest, wouldn't be surprised. Regardless, they need to actually start being somewhat decent soon or they're also just wasting away players seasons. Seattle Bears S92: 14-52-6 [-112] Description: There really isn't much to say about Seattle, as they always seem to be towards the top. Despite that, they had one bad season, but immediately turned it around and were at the top of the conference the next season, talk about a quick rebuild! In all seriousness, the best GMs are ones that avoid rebuilds and it seems Seattle was able to do so and make themselves one of the best teams in NA immediately. Warsaw Predators S96: 20-27-3 [-31] Description: Warsaw has actually been pretty solid the past five seasons making playoffs, but they've decided it's time to rebuild. However, they're in an interesting spot, as they actually don't have their first round pick this season, it belongs to London. As a result, the team has immediately attempted to win as many games as possible to make the pick as bad as possible, so I probably bet they'll make the playoffs at this rate to try their best to not give London a top pick. Regardless though, there's only so much they can do and I wouldn't be surprised if they will have another year of tanking after this. Conclusion Every team tanks without a doubt, but we just looked at the past five seasons. There's for sure teams that are probably on the hot seat, or had GMs swapped and basically left with nothing (a classic). As for the teams that didn't make this list, congratulations, you weren't terrible in the past five seasons. You either have very good GMing to the point you never need to rebuild, or you've been good the past five seasons!

Answers 1. I think they are already allowed if you're above 300 TPE. It depends on the circumstance, but if you're under 300 TPE you shouldn't be able to be called up. You would just be a problem for your own team. 2. I think it would be cool. Especially the all-star events that would be pretty fun to see who's the best at. Don't know how it would work though. 3. My favorite music artist currently is probably Motley Crue, but I listen to so many artists, hard to choose one. Questions 1. What is your favorite dessert and why? 2. Which team in the M is an underdog that you think has a real shot at winning it all? 3. Who do you think is going to win the Hart this season in the NHL and why?

Moscow GM Spartan Threatens Richmond Loss to Chicago 6-3 sends Spartan into a frenzy The Chicago Phoenix took on Moscow today in a heated matchup, which saw the best of NA go up against the best Europe has to offer. The Chicago Phoenix would hold a whiteout at their stadium, prepared to host the toughest challenge they've faced all season. In the end, Chicago would take the game 6-3, which would see GM Spartan up in arms about Richmond's performance in the game. Richmond would go 0/7 and be a -1 in the loss to Chicago, to which Spartan said, "Dogsh*t performance, enjoy the bench," to Richmond. Richmond has yet to comment on the remarks, but Richmond knows he has to play better should Moscow be eyeing down a trophy at the end of the season. Richmond has had a fairly decent season so far, with 49 points in 33 games played and a +34. However, Richmond needs to show up in big games should Moscow win the cup, and that's what GM Spartan is aiming for from his young superstar.

Chicago Phoenix Announce New Arena Name and First Whiteout
badcolethetitan replied to badcolethetitan's topic in Media Spots
What better way to announce it? To be fair, I wanted to change our stadium name (as we literally didn't have one) for a bit.. just didn't have any ideas and this came to my mind today. LOL -
Chicago Phoenix Announce New Arena Name and First Whiteout

Chicago Phoenix Announce New Arena Name and First Whiteout Chicago Phoenix announce new arena name The Chicago Phoenix general manager and owner has announced today that the arena would be getting a new, permanent, name. The reasoning behind it he told the media was "We need something that is significant to our team, our brand, and our fans. They've been through a lot and just saying the 'Chicago Stadium' or 'Chicago Arena' doesn't have much of a ring to it, or much behind it. I believe moving forward, the fans are going to love the new name and it will resonate with our team as well." The name chosen was "The Nest", calling to their branding as the Chicago Phoenix. With a capacity of 16,692 seats, the Phoenix are looking to add more seats in the coming future as recent success has given them extra money to work with. The ultimate goal is to build or upgrade the stadium, so that the fans, players, and management are all proud of what they've accomplished. Players are yet to comment on the change, but the overall consensus is that they've finally got a unique name to call home. The arena will officially have "The Nest" displayed on the ice starting next season, however, the stadium name has already been changed. Future upgrades include adding more seats, building an outside official tailgate area for fans to enjoy before the game, and upgrading various stadium facilities. We are extremely proud to announce this news and we hope we can continue to expand! Chicago Phoenix bring new tradition to their fans Alongside with the new name for the arena, general manager and owner Cole has announced there will be a first ever whiteout in the stadium. In the next home game for the Chicago Phoenix, every fan in attendance will receive a white t-shirt with the words "Protect the Nest". "This is a new tradition that we want to bring to the fans," stated the owner. "We want to showcase we have the best fans in the league and what better way to do it than giving them a chance to support the team and make some noise at our home barn. We want other teams to hate playing in our stadium and make it as difficult for teams to succeed when playing here." Already a sold out crowd for the next game, it will have huge significance for both of the teams competing. The Chicago Phoenix (23-5-2) first in NA take on the Moscow Menace (29-1-2) first in EU. This will be the first matchup between the teams at the top of the standings, and Moscow is currently riding a 14 game win streak. Chicago will have a chance to dethrone the kings of the league, and what better way to do it in front of the home crowd. "We're super excited, I've never been to a whiteout, so I can't wait!" exclaimed a Chicago fan getting ready for the matchup tomorrow. Regardless, it will be a great way to start a new tradition and test Chicago's strength against the best in the league.

Success Starts Early for Richmond and the Chicago Phoenix Richmond off to a hot start George Richmond has started off his 4th season with the Menace at his best pace yet, with 35 points in 24 games played. Richmond is currently on pace to have 105 points this season, which would be a 25 point increase from the last season. Currently, Richmond finds himself playing on the first line, where the past three seasons, he was playing on the second line. He's been put in a much bigger role this season, being one of the most important players on the team and he's doing fairly well. Although not top 10 in scoring, Richmond is just outside the top 10 and possibly could move into there in the future. Richmond was asked about his role with the team and how he feels about the season moving forward, to which he said, "We've been the best team in the league through 24 games, and I don't think anyone would disagree. Everyone on this team has bought into what the coach has been saying and you can tell on the ice. EU this season isn't as strong compared to seasons past, so I think we've got a real good chance to go far in the playoffs. There's a couple teams that could give us trouble, but I feel like we're currently the favorite to make it to the finals. I think the whole team knows that. As for myself, this is the best I've played in my career, but I feel like I have a bit more to give. I believe that with my skill, I should be consistently a 100+ point player now and I want to prove that. Regardless, we've got a fantastic team and I can't wait to see what the future holds." The Moscow Menace are currently first in the league, with a 21-1-2 record and don't seem to be slowing down. They're the favorites currently and other teams will have to find a way to dethrone the king. Chicago Phoenix on fire The Chicago Phoenix are off to one of their best starts in a while, finding themselves at the top of the NA Conference with a record of 17-4-2. Their dynamic trio, of Schwarzer, Moon Moth, and Oven have been the shining spots for the team. On the flip side, the Phoenix are in for a difficult task though, as they've got juggernauts like Vancouver, Seattle, and Toronto who are sleeping giants and will wake up eventually. A hot start is going to be massive for this team though, as later on in the season they're going to be tested by a lot of these top teams. Chicago currently doesn't score the most goals, although, they're scoring at just around 4 goals per game. However, it's their defense and goaltending that has held them at the top, with one of the best defenses in NA. It will be interesting to see how long they can stay atop the NA conference, as the gap between first and second is only 2 points. Hopefully they can continue to win and find some playoff success, as Chicago has only won a single playoff series in a very long time.

Answers 1. I think a lot of teams last season have gotten weaker and we've basically stayed around the same, hence making this a great start. 2. Ryan Artyomov. He's been fantastic and without him, we would be able to win some of our games. 3. I think Toronto. I don't think people expected them to be barely .500 and floating towards a wildcard spot. 6. Kickstart my Heart by Motley Crue. Banger song and I think it would fit well. 7. Pumpkin Pie. I always have it at thanksgiving and it's the only time in the year I eat it. 8. George Richmond meets DJ Moon Head Coach for the UNLV Rebels The Meeting George Richmond loves watching college football, as it's one of his favorite things to do on a Saturday if they don't have any games. Richmond was honored as he was invited out to go watch a UNLV game this weekend, to watch them play and meet the famous DJ Moon. Richmond had this to say, "Quite frankly, I have no clue who this guy is. I mean, I know UNLV the college, but apparently this guy is just him? I didn't know he was a big name, but apparently he is. Regardless, the game was a great time and I would for sure go back." The UNLV Rebels would go on to beat Oregon State 33-25 to improve to 6-1 on the season. Richmond said he would "100%" invite DJ Moon to a VHL game, but doesn't know which one. Is this a meet up of all-time, or is DJ Moon a fraud?

1. I feel like we can go far this time. We've got a great team and we stack up nicely against the rest of the league. 2. I think this is going to be Ryan Artyomov's breakout season. He's due for one. 3. My goat Lightning McSnipe. Once he makes the league he's going crazy. 5. Mo bamba full volume. We going crazy with it. 6. Go ride a sea turtle in the middle of the ocean. 8. The usual. We haven't been good in forever so I'm not surprised.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF TOTTINGHAM? -
2. Probably the worst decision of all time.. we might be screwed now! 3. I felt like it ran it's course, but it was necessary for the time being. I hope it can come back one day. 4. I think they could make the playoffs honestly. They've got a decent team and with no stress, they should be able to perform. 5. Iowa State upsetting Oklahoma State in 2011. Oklahoma State was 10-0 and rank 2. Crazy win! 6. The Sabres making the playoffs! Even though we're 1-3 I still believe we can. But we'll probably miss somehow. 8. 7/11 as it's the closest to me. I only really go there for the slurpees.

Answers 1. The Chicago Phoenix of course! No bias whatsoever, I promise. 2. I try to model my players game after Tage Thompson. He's an exceptional player and I hope my player can do as well as him! 3. I don't follow European sports, but I would have to say any team at the World Cup basically. That's the only time I watch any European sport. Questions 1. What VHL team do you think will be the underdog this season and why? 2. Who do you think is going to win the Calder (ROTY) in the NHL and why? 3. What is your favorite type of pasta and why?

How Good is George Richmond Compared to Past 2nd Overall Picks? The Field In this article, we'll be looking at the past 10 second overall picks (including Richmond is 11) and seeing how he compares to the field. For simplicity sake, we'll be taking a look at the first three seasons of the player's career, as that's how many seasons George Richmond has currently played. The past 10 second overall picks, there has been 5 forwards, 3 defenseman, and 2 goalies. Obviously, we aren't really going to try to compare a goalie to skater stats wise, so they'll be taken out of the rankings. Every other 2nd overall pick (9 remaining) will be ranked 1-9, starting with 9 and making it to the best 2nd overall pick in the last ~10 drafts. Lets start the ranking! REMINDER THIS IS ONLY FIRST 3 SEASONS OF PLAY #9 - Napoleon Dynamite - C - HC Davos Dynamo/New York Americans Goals: 45 (6th) Assists: 68 (Last) Points: 113 (7th) Plus/Minus: -26 (8th) Description: Napoleon Dynamite was the 2nd overall pick in S84, heading to play for Davos in his first two seasons. Napoleon had a pretty bad first season, dropping 22 points in his rookie campaign with a -28 and clearly, things right from the get go wasn't working out for Dynamite. Eventually, he would end up moving to the New York Americans where he would have 45 points in his third season, one short of his sophomore season. Dynamite would then go on an have a pretty solid career, reaching the 40 goal mark once and all-around being a very solid player. However, this list only focuses on his first three seasons and he for sure was one of the worst on this list. He didn't produce much offensively and wasn't surrounded by much talent, leading him to the 9th spot on this list. #8 - FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY Analfist - RW - Vancouver Wolves Goals: 56 (5th) Assists: 79 (8th) Points: 135 (6th) Plus/Minus: +43 (3rd) Description: Up next at 8th, we have FISTED ANALLY BY A CIRCUS MONKEY Analfist, the second overall pick in S88 and still an active player in the league. Analfist starting off did not impress, only having 21 points in his rookie season with 8 goals to his name. The second season though, he was able to make a massive improvement, dropping 53 points and breaking the 20 goal mark. His third season was his best, where he was able to have 61 points with 28 goals. Analfist would then go on to eventually leave Vancouver and head to New York, and finish it off on Moscow. Although playing for multiple teams, he's been able to be a solid consistent contributor for all the teams he was on, especially New York where he had his best season in S94. He was able to put up 50 goals for the first time in his career and a huge milestone for such a player. He's had 4 30+ goal seasons and 2 40+ goal seasons. Regardless, his first three seasons weren't anything to be impressed about, besides the fact he can put the puck in the back of the net here and there. #7 - Eric Queefson - D - D.C. Dragons/Moscow Menace Goals: 27 (8th) Assists: 83 (7th) Points: 110 (Last) Plus/Minus: -31 (Last) Description: The lowest ranked defenseman on the list and the S89 second overall pick is Eric Queefson. Queefson started with DC in his first two seasons, where he actually had a fairly decent rookie campaign putting up 37 points. However, his second season was less than impressive, as he regressed only dropping 17 points. His third season would see him moving to Moscow as he'd have his best season yet, putting up 55 points and his best season to date as he is no longer playing. After that, he'd go on and play for multiple teams, but never could replicate the success on Moscow. Probably career wise the worst player on this list, but we aren't necessarily looking at that, we're looking at the first three seasons. Queefson didn't necessarily have the best first three seasons, but as a defenseman he was still able to put up some decent numbers early on. Regardless, Queefson is a big "what if" of what could have been an amazing career cut short. #6 - Yaroslav Bogatyrev - RW - Seattle Bears Goals: 63 (4th) Assists: 89 (T-5th) Points: 152 (5th) Plus/Minus: -20 (7th) Description: Slotting in at sixth on the list is Yaroslav Bogatyrev, the second overall pick in S86. Bogatyrev would make his debut immediately, but it wasn't what most Seattle fans expected, as he would only drop 16 goals and put up 31 points in his rookie campaign. His second season wasn't much better either, but he still broke the 20 goal mark and had 44 points. However, just like a lot of players on this list, his 3rd season is when he finally broke out, dropping 77 points and 26 goals. Bogatyrev would then go on to continue a fair amount of his career with Seattle, eventually leaving and retiring with Malmo. Bogatyrev wasn't necessarily an amazing player, but he was a very solid player who broke the 40 goal mark twice in his career. On top of that, he was basically a + player almost every season except the first two, so he was responsible on both sides of the ice. Not necessarily the flashiest player, but a solid scorer and someone who you'd for sure want to have on your team. #5 - Walter Fitzroy Jr - D - Toronto Legion Goals: 22 (Last) Assists: 89 (T-5th) Points: 111 (8th) Plus/Minus: +46 (2nd) Description: We're now at the top five, with Walter Fitzroy Jr who was the fifth overall pick in S90. Walter Fitzroy Jr. was a hype pick at the time with a ton of promise, and he actually didn't have too bad of a start early on. His rookie campaign consisted of 30 points, with 5 goals, but mainly was shown as a pure passer. His second season though, questions started to rise as he only improved by a single point. However, the third season he finally showed what he could be capable of, putting up 50 points with 40+ assists. Walter Fitzroy Jr is still playing for the Toronto Legion and is entering his 6th season in the league, but has been a bit of a let down career wise. He's been able to break the 50 point mark multiple times, but for a 2nd overall pick, you're probably wanting more. Regardless, Walter Fitzroy Jr has been an important piece to multiple Toronto Cup runs and at the end of the day, his name is on the trophy more than most. #4 - George Richmond - C - Moscow Menace Goals: 96 (3rd) Assists: 117 (4th) Points: 213 (3rd) Plus/Minus: +31 (4th) Description: Continuing on, we have George Richmond in the fourth place spot, taken with the second overall pick in S92. Richmond had a lot of hype around him and coming into the league, easily delivered. He has one of the best rookie seasons on this list, if not the best rookie season, where he was able to put up 62 points and nearly cracking 30 goals as a rookie. The next season, he would continue to improve putting up 71 points and 35 goals, already breaking the 30+ goal mark for the first time in his career. His third season, he would show improvement still, but he would drop off a bit in scoring, favoring more passing instead dropping 80 points. Richmond has shown a slow and steady growth, unlike a lot of players on this list who have the same first/second season, and then burst onto the scene in their third season. Regardless, it's very early in Richmond's career, but he could be a 40+ goal scorer potentially at his peak and a very solid player overall. #3 - Skor McFleury - D - Riga Reign/HC Davos Dynamo Goals: 42 (7th) Assists: 138 (2nd) Points: 180 (4th) Plus/Minus: +20 (5th) Description: Up at third on this list is Skor McFleury, the 3rd overall pick in S87. McFleury made his debut in his rookie season and actually had a fairly decent season for a defenseman, putting up 42 points in 72 games played. His second season saw little improvement, where he was able to secure 55 points, but his big break came in his third season (shocker). He was able to drop 83 points as a defenseman with 22 goals and 61 assists, which was extremely solid at the time. He ended up leaving Riga for Davos in his third season, so possibly a change of teams was the reason for his success. Nevertheless, he would go on to play for a multitude of teams, eventually retiring with Riga. His best season would be with Prague, where he would have 102 points, finally breaking the 100 point mark which is extremely impressive. He was able to break the 20 goal mark 4 times in his career, and had a 30+ goal season in S94. I think it's fair to say he is by far the best defenseman on the list and potentially could be one of the best players on this list. I could easily see him contesting #2 or even #1. #2 - John Jameson - C - Prague Phantoms Goals: 98 (2nd) Assists: 127 (3rd) Points: 225 (2nd) Plus/Minus: +58 (1st) Description: The second player on this list, is John Jameson, the second overall pick in S85. Jameson would go on to have an amazing first three seasons with Prague, including his rookie campaign where he had 67 points and a solid 28 goals. The next season he would slightly improve, but his third season would be when he would finally break out, having 44 goals and dropping an impressive 89 points. Jameson would go on to play the rest of his career with the Prague Phantoms and would put up 40+ goal seasons in 6 straight, with one 50 goal season. Jameson had an exceptional career and is one of the best players on this list career wise. His first three seasons were very good too, where he would put an impressive 225 points. On top of that, he was loyal from his team to the get go and I respect that, so he lands second on this list. #1 - Thor Reingaard - RW - Warsaw Predators Goals: 106 (1st) Assists: 143 (1st) Points: 249 (1st) Plus/Minus: +5 (6th) Description: The best player on this list and securing first place is Thor Reingaard, the second overall pick in S91. Reingaard burst onto the scene as one of the most hyped prospects in a long time, putting up 58 points in his rookie season, pretty impressive for a young player. However, after that he showed he's already ready to compete with the best in the league, dropping an impressive 100 points and easily the best sophomore season on the list. Reingaard would then go on in his third season to have 91 points, but regardless, he was already the face of the franchise for the Warsaw Predators. Reingaard still is with Warsaw and it's very easy he could go down as one of the best players in Warsaw history at this point, should he stay with the team. Reingaard has had pure domination since the beginning and it's very obvious he's deserving of the first spot on this list, without a doubt. Conclusion What did we learn after looking at the past second overall picks with George Richmond and also their careers? Most of them in their third season showed what they were truly capable of, with huge improvements coming from the second to the third season. It also seems a lot of these players go on to play for multiple teams in their careers and eventually leave the team that drafted them at some point, with only a couple truly staying with a single team throughout their career. As for Richmond, he finds himself in a pretty good spot for his career trajectory and could be a franchise player for Moscow one day. A lot of Moscow fans want to see huge improvement with Richmond, but sometimes, it takes a bit longer for players to develop. As for expectations next season, Richmond should be able to break the point-per-game mark for the first time in his career and potentially have 40 goals. However, it isn't just Richmond who will need to take a step forward, it'll also depend on his teammates for the next season. Regardless, I wouldn't be surprised if Richmond is finally able to cross the 90 point mark, but we'll have to see how things pan out! 2000+ words
