The news are out. Daniel Janser will dress one last time for Team Western Europe. Nico Pearce will also be on his international farewell tour and try to defend the title. There were some surprises in the nominated roster, as Gonçalves, arguably one of the best centers in the VHL was not invited to the party. We were also mildly surprised when repeat cup winner Marcel Janser was on the list for the defending Champion. The Swiss veteran defender has only played in the S83 WJHC team, which won gold. Interestingly, he played in the final against three of his later London Cup winning team mates Cat, Retoslav and Yasilievich and even scored an assist in the process.

On the other hand, there were some familiar faces, if we look back at the S86 World Champions: As already mentioned, D. Janser and Nico Pearce return to the international stage. But so do Lavelle, Jameson and Laperriere up front, Maellard, Nano and Strasmore on the blue line as well as Cole Pearce in net.

It would be amazing, if Marcel could lift another trophy this season and so win the double. He is the living, breathing evidence that one can have a respectable career, even if one is not the most talented player in the league or the roster. He has proven that with hard work, consistent play and the willingness to sacrifice your body for the team can take you a very long way, up to and including a Continental Cup win. He may have no individual awards to his name, but he won two cups, something only a tiny percentage of players can boast. In fact, there are household names and HOFer like Mike Szatkowski, Christian Stolzschweiger, David Knight and Devon Marlow-Marta who 'only' managed to get to the pinnacle of the VHL once in their illustrous careers.

The World Cup is due to start later this week. So let's have a look at the ProAM tournament which is running at the present. The Bangor Beavers are second in the standings with one point deficit against the Steelheads (but two games in hand). Daniel has picked up speed and leads almost any relevant statistics for forwards. The Rotkreuz native is top of the league in goals scored, points, shooting percentage, power play goals, hattricks, points per 20 minutes and longest nose hair. He is amongst the top ten in assists, game winning goals, shots, +/- rating and only fellow Beaver Cooke has a marginally better win rate at the draw.

So while the Janser brothers have eclipsed their zenith and are on their way out of professional sports, they are still kicking and setting an example for other aspiring Swiss youngsters. They have been tempered in hundreds of hard fought battles and found good enough to compete with the best. Once retirement comes around and it is time to say goodbye, Marcel and Dan can raise their heads high and proudly say: 'We have given our best.'

Until such sad day dawns, please find Dan's statistics for the ProAM Tournament:

25gp, 27g, 28a, 55pts, +14, 14 PIM, 57 hits, 20sb, 3 gwg, 10ppg, 63.85FO% and 3 First Star distinctions
