Barack Obama Applause GIF by Obama

Good evening and welcome to the Season 88 VHLM Awards Show! Here to give the VHLM some much-deserved hype this season is your host, Doomsday.

Let's be real: the VHLM is, was always intended to be, and always will be a developmental league, the first stepping stone for future stars of the VHL. But that doesn't mean that the VHLM isn't the home of competition, because even at this level, there is fierce competition amongst the future hopefuls of the VHL. Success in the VHLM isn't a prerequisite to being a great player, or even a VHL player at all. But it sure doesn't hurt, and memorable times in the VHLM are a huge part towards building the core towards a successful career in the bigs. Tonight, we're here to celebrate the competitors of the VHLM!

Speaking of competition, the race for the top spot went down to the wire this past season. It was a three-horse race between the Mississauga Hounds, the Mexico City Kings, and the San Diego Marlins, and it came down to the final sim of the season for the top team of the VHLM regular season to be crowned. While the Marlins finished with 99 points, both the Hounds and Kings finished with 101 points each. However, the tiebreaker went to Mississauga, whose 47 ROW edged out Mexico City's 44, making the Hounds the top dogs of the Season 88 regular season.

However many wins you get in the regular season, you need to win twelve more in the playoffs to claim your place as the VHLM Champions. The Mexico City Kings punched their ticket in the Finals with a sweep of the Las Vegas Aces and then taking down the San Diego Marlins in six games. Opposing them were the Philadelphia Reapers, who earned their way there with a win over the Halifax 21st in five games and coming back from a 3-2 deficit against the Mississauga Hounds. Fittingly, the Founder's Cup Finals was a tight, back and forth series that required a Game Seven, with Anthony Simmons @Starchychaff delivering a Cup-winning goal on the power play for Philadelphia in overtime, finally giving the City of Brotherly Love something to celebrate after a string of championship defeats in other sports.

skylar_rift_trophy.png

The Skylar Rift Trophy is awarded annually to the player deemed to be the most valuable player of the VHLM Playoffs, and what better time to crown our playoff MVP than right now? This season, four players were nominated for the Skylar Rift Trophy:

Eric Queefson @twists (PHI) - 19 GP, 7 G, 18 A, 25 P, -3, 6 PIM, 27 HIT, 33 SB
The eventual second overall pick of the S89 VHL Entry Draft was a menace throughout the postseason, leading the Reapers in points from the blue line while excelling on special teams and standing tall in his own end of the ice.

Jeffrey Blake @ElementStyx9 (PHI) - 19 GP, 12-7-0, .902 SV%, 2.58 GAA, 1 SO
The man between the pipes for Philadelphia was consistently stout, keeping the Reapers in games with his strong play. Big stop after big stop allowed his team to overcome the odds time after time.

Justin Williams @JCV (MEX) - 17 GP, 16 G, 12 A, 28 P, +18, 14 PIM, 30 HIT, 5 SB
Although Mexico City came up on the short end of the Finals, Williams was absolutely a dynamic player during the Kings' run. His 16 goals were the most of any player during the playoffs, as was his +18 rating.

LeBen Aky @Ben_Reformed (PHI) - 19 GP, 11 G, 10 A, 21 P, -5, 18 PIM, 42 HIT, 4 SB
If Aky wasn't scoring points, he was delivering crushing hits. The leading forward for Philadelphia was determined to make an impact on every game in some manner, and that's exactly what he did.

The winner of the Skylar Rift Trophy as the MVP of the Season 88 VHLM Playoffs is…

The Alexander Chershenko Trophy is awarded annually to the player who leads the VHLM in goals, and it was a close race. Each of the three teams vying for the Prime Minister's Cup had an elite scorer leading the way, with just two goals separating them. Sjin @Sjin of the San Diego Marlins and Jeff Lewis @nerji of the Mississauga Hounds gave it their all, but in the end, one finished at the top of the leaderboard, and that was Justin Williams @JCV of the Mexico City Kings, who scored 46 goals this season!

The Vladimir Boomchenko Trophy is awarded to the player that leads the VHLM in assists, and this season had two players as the frontrunners. Pope Francis @nurx of the Halifax 21st finished with 70 assists, but it was two shy of our league leader, Reginald the Dodo's @Esso2264 72 assists for the Mississauga Hounds!

Awarded annually to the player who scores the most points in the VHLM, the Ethan Osborne Trophy recognizes the greatest offensive player in the M. This season, we had three standouts who recorded over 100 points!

C Tullemore Dew @Spade18 (HFX) - 37 goals, 64 assists
D Reginald the Dodo @Esso2264 (MIS) - 29 goals, 72 assists
LW Justin Williams @JCV (MEX) - 46 goals, 55 assists

Astute mathematicians out there may have noticed that all three of our candidates finished with 101 points, meaning all three of them are co-winners of the Ethan Osborne Trophy!! This is the third time this has happened, the first since Season 74, and the first time in VHLM history that three players have tied for the league lead in points.

Congratulations to Tullemore Dew, Reginald the Dodo, and Justin Williams on staking your claim in VHLM history as co-winners of the Ethan Osborne Trophy!

benoit_devereux_trophy.png

The Benoit Devereux Trophy is awarded to the top goaltender in the VHL, and what better way to start your goaltending career than by winning an award named for a legendary Hall of Fame goalie? This season, there are three candidates vying for this honor:

Jonny Elgar @Jonny (MIS) - 47-16-4, 0.914 SV%, 2.41 GAA, 8 SO
Backstopping the eventual Prime Minister's Trophy winners, Elgar was consistently a strong goaler for the Hounds.

Olivier Gauthier @fonziGG (SDM) - 48-21-3, 0.926 SV%, 2.17 GAA, 8 SO
The Marlins remained in the hunt in large part to the dominant play of Gauthier, who blanked his opponent eight teams.

Ross Glagau @Zetterberg (MEX) - 45-17-7, 0.912 SV%, 2.46 GAA, 5 SO
Glagau was a strong goaltender who eventually led the Kings to a Founder's Cup appearance in part to his consistently strong play.

Your winner, by unanimous decision…

The Ryan Sullivan Trophy is awarded to the top defenseman in the VHLM, and boy were there some outstanding seasons by blue liners in the VHLM this year! Three of then, however, stood out from the rest, making strong cases to their claim to this award:

Reginald the Dodo @Esso2264 (MIS) - 29 G, 72 A, 101 P, +19, 66 PIM, 162 HIT, 127 SB
Beyond leading the VHLM in assists with 72 and tying for the league lead in points with 101, Reginald the Dodo was also a leader defensively as well. He wasn't afraid to hit when needed and sacrificed his body to protect his goaltender as well.

Pope Francis @nurx (HFX) - 25 G, 70 A, 95 P, +4, 128 PIM, 225 HIT, 238 SB
Quite possibly the most complete two-way defenseman in the VHLM this season, Pope Francis was dangerous wherever he was on the ice. His Holiness especially impressed defensively with incredible amounts of hits and shots blocked.

Darko Alexander Malkovich @AColdCanadian (SSK) - 16 G, 58 A, 74 P, 0, 118 PIM, 249 HIT, 167 SB
Malkovich didn't have the same spotlight as the other two due to being on a struggling Saskatoon team, but what he accomplished there was nothing short of wild.

Finishing with an even +/- on a team that finished second to last is an impressive accomplishment.

The votes have been tallied up, and this was a close one, folks, with one vote deciding the winner…

matt_bentz_trophy.png

The Matt Bentz Trophy is awarded to the top two-way forward in the VHLM, and it's not uncommon for winners of this award to contend for the Scott Boulet Trophy in the VHL either. It takes the right blend of physicality and touch offensively to win this award, let's take a look at stood out this season:

Jeremia Barbaslov @Je Barbaslov (LVA) - 31 G, 55 A, 86 P, -13, 38 PIM, 170 HIT, 44 SB
Taking your chances against Barbaslov was a real gamble, as he wasn't afraid to put you on your rear end and take off with the puck the other way. His blend of goal scoring and physicality earns his spot here.

Nick Sansoe @Tipskid97 (MIA) - 26 G, 50 A, 76 P, -19, 46 PIM, 183 HIT, 49 SB
Scoring over a point-per-game and showing no fear on upping his game to stop opposing players made Nick Sansoe worthy of the Marauder name.

Grunkle Stan-dingyouup @Big Newff (HOU) - 28 G, 28 A, 56 P, -1, 70 PIM, 209 HIT, 24 SB
Is it a goofy name? Perhaps, but underestimating Grunkle Stan-dingyouup got you knocked down to the ice in a hurry. On top of being a hit machine, he had a knack for putting the puck in the net as well.

Justin Williams @JCV (MEX) - 46 G, 55 A, 101 P, +37, 52 PIM, 145 HIT, 19 SB
One of the most dangerous scoring threats in the VHLM, Justin Williams was also more than capable of stepping in defensively with a well-timed body check.

The voters were very divided on this one, but there is still a clear winner tonight…

The Jack Reilly Trophy is awarded annually to the top general manager in the VHLM, a sentence that truly doesn't do justice of what it takes to be a great general manager in the VHLM. On top of fielding and managing a competitive roster, general managers in the VHLM are also responsible for cultivating a welcoming and informative community, guiding new players, and helping to ensure that their knowledge and passion grows. It is one of, if not, the most important job in the VHL, as the league cannot continue without their efforts towards developing the next generation of VHL talent.

This season, we have two candidates vying for this prestigious award: @badcolethetitan, who guided the Mexico City Kings on another incredibly successful season, and @Pifferfish, who guided the Philadelphia Reapers from underdogs to champions.

It was a close vote, but we have a winner…

Here it is, the big one: the Mitch Higgins Trophy is presented to the most valuable player of the VHLM regular season. Throughout a thrilling season, the excellence of five players rose above all others, and they seek to cap off Season 88 with the ultimate topper with recognition as VHLM MVP.

Reginald the Dodo @Esso2264 (MIS) - 29 G, 72 A, 101 P, +19, 66 PIM, 162 HIT, 127 SB

A blue liner in all but name only: Reginald the Dodo was a terror in the offensive zone as one of three players to top 100 points, with a league-leading 72 assists. Despite being offensively focused, he was still stout defensively as well, making him a dynamic part of the Prime Minister's Cup-winning Mississauga Hounds.

Pope Francis @nurx (HFX) - 25 G, 70 A, 95 P, +4, 128 PIM, 225 HIT, 238 SB

Although His Holiness didn't quite reach 100 points, Pope Francis made up for it by being a maniac in the defensive zone. His 238 shots blocked led the VHLM by more than 50, and he ranked fourth in the league with 225 hits. Oh, and he had 95 points to go with it, making him a force to be reckoned with wherever on the ice he was.

Olivier Gauthier @fonziGG (SDM) - 48-21-3, 0.926 SV%, 2.17 GAA, 8 SO

Olivier Gauthier was nothing short of insane in net this season for the San Diego Marlins. Of his VHLM-best 48 victories, eight of them were shutouts, and his VHLM-best .926 save percentage came with the second-highest amount of shots in the league taken against him. Nothing short of remarkable goaltending from him this season.

Sjin @Sjin (SDM) - 44 G, 54 A, 98 P, +47, 52 PIM, 140 HIT, 52 SB

This VHLM superstar turned in a dazzling season for San Diego, leading the Marlins in goals with 44 and points with 98. Despite being such an offensive powerhouse, he still contributed defensively, blocking 52 shots and dropping 140 hits. Sjin dreamed of VHLM greatness, and he achieved it.

Justin Williams @JCV (MEX) - 46 G, 55 A, 101 P, +37, 52 PIM, 145 HIT, 19 SB

What more can be said about this guy? He led the VHLM in goals with 46, tied for the league lead in points as one of three players to score 101 points, and played responsible defense. Justin Williams gave players a reason to fear defending against the Mexico City Kings, and was a huge part of their big season. He can do everything… other than read.

The votes are in… the most valuable player in the VHLM is…

With the awarding of the Mitch Higgins Trophy, we have reached the end of the Season 88 VHLM Awards, and we turn the page to Season 89. New prospects will rise, new dreams will be born, and VHL scouts will be looking up and down for the next big star. The only question is... who wil seize the opportunity presented to them and take the first step towards stardom?

Thanks for tuning in, good night, and good hockey!
